they arent really doing that, are they?

Yeah! They do it every year. I used to know a girl from South Africa who quite seriously considered it her Plan B.

gareth to thread!

It costs money to get a green card? Mine was free, IIRC. OK, I had to spend YEARS in queues and offices registering for it and getting fingerprinted, but it didn't cost me any more money than, like, the $10 it cost to get officially fingerprinted.

Green Card lottery... for fucks sake! you could just marry me! Then I could be married and some lucky sod could have American residency rights. Too bad Hilton *hates* America with a terrifying passion or that's something I could use to get him to marry me...

i am going to try for this internal transfer, which should bypass the whole green card stuff, but i cant apply till october/november, and itll take aroudn 3 months from there

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 9 February 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't that $39 going to whatever company is claiming they'll enter you? I mean, the lottery is real, but if there are a lotta scam artists etc. out there charging large fees to enter you, that's another story..

daria g, Sunday, 9 February 2003 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

a-ha. It doesn't cost to enter the lottery. 50,000 green cards are handed out totally at random, that's true.

Yes, don't pay for it. And make sure you're a nationality they're accepting - i qualified last time but only because I have an Italian parent - as a Brit I wouldn't have been permitted.

You have nothing to lose, but there are millions of applicants and they are ultra-picky about each application. If you send the wrong shape envelope you get rejected (true) - one recent year they rejected 3 million applications simply because the forms weren't filled in properly.

UK is out again because of having sendmore than 50,000 immigrants in the last five years. Apart from Northern Ireland.
