Water (to drink) - C/D?

Not a big fan o'really chilled water. Hurts me teef. Plus if its been in the fridge too long it seems to always get that icky other-fridge-smells taste. Anyone ever notice that?

At home I drink and cook with filtered water; DC tap water is heavily chlorinated and during the summer develops a nasty-tasting "bloom." And I occasionally buy smaller water bottles, and then refill them with filtered water. Just because I know blatantly manipulative advertising when I see it doesn't mean I don't like to be seen holding a bottle with an Evian label.

i have to admit ned i was terribly scarred by yr desire for a crisp apple, white wine and cheese. i forget the specifics... but the addition of sparkling water freeks me out further. i cannot put a finger on what spooks me so, but it has something to do with knapsacks.. :)

i've never really drank water, i prefer to sip a few litres of no-added-sugar squash every day. but this has me a bit worried, is my drinking pattern abnormal?! are there any serious health risks in drinking this volume of artificially sweetened drinks?

My 16-year-old daughter hasn't drunk water for two years. She says she hates the taste, even chilled, so drinks nothing at mealtimes when only water is on the table. In hot weather, she seems ready to risk dehydration rather than drink it. She has only artificially sweetened squashes, flavoured waters and fizzy drinks. I worry about the health risks, but also about making too much fuss. Should I just let this one go, or should I say something?

Yes, you should let it go. As long as your daughter is taking in enough fluid to keep her well – and she seems to be doing that – it doesn't really matter that the fluid isn't in the form of plain water. If you try to persuade her otherwise, you risk stirring up arguments about it, or accusations of interfering in her life, neither of which you want. She is 16, after all, so is old enough to make up her own mind (legally at least) about what she should and shouldn't drink. So leave it be. Don't bother mentioning it, and she should eventually settle into a normal eating and drinking pattern.

Water is so gross. If my body didn't crave it and overrule me, I'd never drink the stuff plain.

I love water. I hate when restaurants put a slice of lemon in it though.

We have a filter at work, and everyone else is eww it tastes gross, I don't know what is wrong with them.

I like the grapefruit La Croix because I like to overpronounce "pamplemousse." I will try it with a lime wedge!

Water is amazing. I drink two pints with dinner most evenings and about 1.5 litres during the day, after which i change my system of measurement it seems. Occasionally I dilute some squash or whatever but water rules. Never touch coke etc these days. Love fizzy water tho, san pellegrino, Perrier, or just cheap shit....of man's many loves his affair with water is one of the most passionate and enduring.

Basically I use herbal tea or some added citrus, depending on the seasons, to make water more palatable to me. In winter I drink many many pints a day, in the form of peppermint or chamomile or hibiscus or similar tea.

We got one of those soda machines - S0dastr3am? A lot cheaper than the soda siphon, though they sent flvaors, which we aren't terribly intersted in. I did find a page that has recipes of a sort for mineral waters, so if I ever get it together to get some of the chemicals, I'll give that a try...

I carry water around in a bottle flask thing which works ok.
THink I tend to drink squash when I'm at home or some form of Coffee or herbal tea.
Have been using water instead of milk in cereal recently which just about works with the combo of muesli and bran cereal I tend to eat for breakfast. Trying to work out if not drinking milk might clear up some possible allergic reactions I've been dealing with for years

I haven't drunk anything other than water for the last 5 years. before that used to drink a lot of lucazade, ribena, diet coke etc. feel a lot better now and my teeth are in better shape.

Yes. I live in western Oregon, where all the sizable cities and many towns have access to good quality 'soft' water that tastes very good after minimal treatment, often drawn from a river that originates in a forested mountainous watershed that is protected from logging or exposure to agricultural runoff. But there are plenty of contaminated wells out there, too.

In terms of basic safety for any tap water the key requirement is frequent and comprehensive testing. These cost money, so the bigger the water system, the better the testing regime is likely to be.

I looked at the website of our local water utility (for Oakland and the entire East Bay) to see about our water... it's safe, it's tested all the time, etc. It was interesting to find out that our water is still 90% snowmelt from the Sierras, via the Mokelumne River into storage reservoirs

However, I have a friend up the hill that still buys water from one of those filter things in front of the grocery store. She's convinced all the pipes in these old buildings are lead, and maybe they are. That was one of the main issues in Flint MI, where they switched from well water to river water (or the other way around) and the altered pH balance started leaching lead from old pipes

Doesn't taste good due to all the chalk, usually put it through a britta filter for this reason, perfectly safe though. a decade in China made me v suspicious of tap water and it's a hard habit to shake off.

In London, try to avoid it. In Scotland, the more the merrier.

last time I was in Scotland, a local told us you can safely drink water right out of a creek... there is no Giardia there. (In California, we have to filter when out hiking or camping)

Lake Michigan is currently famously clean, there's a Tiktok account that takes suggestions of things to swab and then cultures them for bacteria, and is located in Chicago, and sampled Lake Mi right from one of the sea walls and it cultured NOTHING. Our girl is actually TOO clean bc of zebra mussels, actually.

Still don't like water. Happy for it cool off so I can drink soothing hot herbal tea again.

Had a chance to visit a huge water treatment plant in Sacramento a couple years ago. Massive, high tech, etc, but watching the Sacramento River pouring in was insane. I actually live on the mokelumne River way upstream (Calaveras County)

I grew up on well water, it was awesome. The ground is really sandy there so it's super well filtered, naturally. It might have also been the pipes of our 100-year-old house but it always tasted faintly metallic/iron-y? Or maybe stony? Whatever, it was awesome and made it seem at least 25% colder. And it was COLD. Tap water in NYC is good but it's not cold.

I’m six years in on well water & it’s good. But the first thing I do when visiting friends is get a long pull of Chicago tap water. Miss the taste so much.

There's an artesian well not far from here that still has pressure, a pipe with constant outflow and surrounded by No Trespassing signs. I keep thinking I'll go grab a few gallons but never have.

I grew up in unincorperated Chicago which was fed by well water that would be so frequently rusty when we turned on the taps.

Later, the neighboring town took over our subdivision and with that, we got Lake Michigan water. It was much better. The pump houses were abandoned, then torn down. We played in the abandoned lots where they were, but then later they were sold as housing lots.

I left for the west coast. Today in San Francisco, the water still comes from a granite valley in a National Park dammed up by an act of Congress after the 1906 earthquake. Maybe it's the best water in the world?

Southern California water history needs a separate thread on its own, but civic balkanization has led to patchwork of hundreds of local and regional water districts all fighting for water rights. How much of a political thug your local district has historically been does have a direct affect on your water quality.

I love drinking water and I love living here in the foothills, but of all the places I've lived this town has the hardest water imaginable. Our water is mostly groundwater occasionally supplemented by San Gabriel Mountains runoff and imports from the MWD aqueducts. Watertable levels have been drawn down low enough that mineral and chemical contents have shot up. We're still within the legal limits, but we're also fighting a constantly losing battle of cleaning off lime deposits from faucets, sinks, and bathroom fixtures. The new kitchen sink faucet I bought seven years ago? It'll be due for replacing here in a couple of months because deposits have just about eroded through it.

It could be worse. Where my sister lives in Orange County, the chemical and mineral content of the water was so high that she, along with thousands of other people, had to replace all the water pipes in her house after pinhole leaks were discovered. The home builders sued the water district for excess disinfectant in the water. The water district claimed everything is within all legal limits. My sister's contractor told us that everyone is to blame: developers have been cheapening out and using thinner copper pipes while the watertable has simultaneously been overdrawn enough that what's left loves to much on them.

Unsurprising, we filter our drinking water and are currently looking at replacing our current setup with a reverse osmosis system.

I found one of those Ayurvedic copper pitchers for water and I know that's maybe a bit woo-woo to some but it actually does improve the taste of the tap water.... I don't leave it in the fridge, just on the counter

Diane Feinstein was a big believer in keeping Hetch-Hetchy as a reservoir rather than restoring the valley: "I think it's beautiful just as it is."

Well, San Francisco did put the proposal to remove the O'Shaughnessy / Hetch Hetchy dam on the ballot 14 years ago and it went down like 75 / 25.

Ngl SF's water is delicious. In my neighborhood they started mixing in 20% rainwater and it's noticeably not as good.

That said I'd be supportive of restoring the valley and filtering my tap water more often instead.
