what are some nice things that i might like that can be done in a day from NYC?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Philadelphia?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

What, you've run out of things to do in NYC now?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"from"?

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

been to philly twice, maybe see something different?

haha martin, no way! i was wondering about the general environs too though

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Atlantic City, maybe? Or Thomas Edison's house/museum in Orange, NJ. Or just drive around the Hudson River Valley. Connecticut's not so bad, either, once you get off I-95.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

New Haven! We can train it -- and go to the Yale Museum of Art just like they did in Gilmore Girls. Seriously, they have a great collection of British art, something you're sure not to get at home. Or...Anandale-on-Hudon; Bard! Gareth, would you be safe in Atlantic City?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

do they hate brown?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Arthur and Tracer in Hudson River Valley mind-meld!! You can drive past Ft Lee New Jersey, there's a bunch of little towns strung along like pearls and it's a beautiful drive. Nyack is a good place to stop or turn around. Edward Hopper's house is there! If the weather's warm you can go to Bear Mountain state park and just wander around in the forest and stuff which is beautiful in that lush low-impact burbling creek Appalachian kind of way.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of the islands off the long island coast are really nice. I went to fire Island aged about 9, but I guess they'll be pretty deserted at this time of year.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Eek my ex-boss was from Nyack. (Ed: I think Gareth likes his islands deserted.)

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Then Fire Island gets my vote.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

If we go to Nyack we can visit my stepbrother and his family. If we go to Fire Island we can look for the lighthouse where my grandfather's family worked and lived.

I guess it's presumptuous to use "we" but wouldn't you like a guide who knows the area(s)?

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

the hamptons?

maura (maura), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Fire Island population to be most concerned about: the mosquitoes!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

go to my parents house

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude jess you already told us you don't want us there.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

btw who do I mean by "us"? what's happening, is gareth visiting New York again?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

:)

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer, do keep up.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

b-but i'm not there tracer...think of the hilarity

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 11 February 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Should we bring crystal meth this time?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Storm King is a nice place to have a picnic. It's a few hours north of NYC - a really nice sculpture park with some works by Isamu Noguchi, Henry Moore, Calder, etc.

Also: Six Flags! Challenge the Nitro! Conquer the Medusa! Brand new for 2003: Superman, the Ride!

phil-two, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

London!

(link goes to a really good airfare offer from British Airways, expires soon tho)

Aaron A., Wednesday, 12 February 2003 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is Storm King? I like Isamu Noguchi. Ixnay on the amusement park, unless it is decaying and in New Jersay.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Wildwood!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ikea!

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The Catskills are beautiful, if you like all that nature crap.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

and jewish comedians

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

That's it; we're going to Wildwood! (Gareth: "Who said anything about we?")

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

and jewish comedians

hahahaha, that's extra funny from you! Did suzy teach you that or do you just know?

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha there haven't been any Jewish comedians in the Catskills for 20 years!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

if you go to the ikea on long island you can visit my parents, who live 8 blocks away

maura (maura), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

>Haha there haven't been any Jewish comedians in the Catskills for 20 years!

When I went there I saw many Jewish people. Some of them must have been funny.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Jewish people, yes. (Hasidic Jews.)

Jewish resorts, no. They all went bankrupt some time in the early '90s.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

>Jewish resorts, no. They all went bankrupt some time in the early '90s.

I stayed at a Ukrainian resort. I figure there have to be some Jewish ones left.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Nope.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Or...Anandale-on-Hudon; Bard!

By train, take the Metro North Hudson line to Poughkeepsie, then hitchhike! Or take Amtrak to Rhinecliff, then hitchhike!

Things to do in the Rhinebeck/Red Hook/Bard area: orchards galore (better for in the fall), Upstate Films (Rhinebeck), Rhinecliff Hotel (get your weird drink on), uh drive to Hyde Park and see FDR's house, er drive up to Germantown and look for Sonny Rollins, go to Olana (if you like Hudson River School painters), etc., etc.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe my memory is all screwy but I've been to most places mentioned above (I even went to Bard College), and can't really recommend any of them. Bear Mountain maybe. Wildwood maybe but I haven't been there since childhood. Boardwalks, beaches and cheap motels, right? I always wish I went to Fire Island, but my fantasy of it I'm sure is way more After Dark than it really is.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

If you went to Bard College (and I think we've covered this before), then can you recommend gravity bong hits in South Hall?

P.S. Forgot the Rhinebeck Aerodrome, Holy Cow Ice Cream in Red Hook, Another Roadside Attraction (Milan), the Red Hook Diner, Rhino Records in New Paltz, etc.

hstencil, Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought all those big Catskills schmaltz-trail resorts went under when clientele went south for their holidays. Perhaps based on his assumptions Ed has actually seen Dirty Dancing?

::ducks::

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Dirty Dancing was shot in VA and NC!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, Aaron, that is an incredible deal. From NYC you can usually get >$200 round trip but to offer it from the West Coast is insane.

NEW YORK, Feb. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ - An unprecedented air fare sale of $198 round-trip from anywhere in the USA to London is being offered by British Airways for the next three days, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The $198 round-trip fare is valid for travel Feb. 18 through March 31, 2003 and Nov. 1 through Dec. 15, 2003. The airline is also offering greatly reduced fares for travel throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall.

SPencer Chow to thread! That fare expires tomorrow.

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

(Beware the hidden BA $100 tax.) Sean went to Bard? [swoon]

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

but you pay it regardless

Has anyone been apple picking this season? I read an article in which the writer looked at the apples on the trees and noticed that the ones on the table seemed better and just bought those; that sounds like my kind of apple of picking.

Where is the spookiest place in the outer NY region to spend Halloween? The Sleepy Hollow Ferry schedule for this year ends Nov. 2.
