Not Afraid of Clowns: Classic or Dud?

I have absolutely no fear of clowns (except if they have guns or knives, or want to eat or burn me). Is this okay, or deeply pathological?

Joe (Joe), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

There are many things I'm not afraid of unless they have guns or knives, or want to eat or burn me. I don't see what makes clowns so special.

(Besides, clowns ALWAYS have guns or knives and want to eat or burn you.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it's OK. I don't mind them either. They're just a bit stupid.

anthony easton (anthony), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

where does the clown hatred come from?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

that's a serious question, i wanna know!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

their faces resemble those of demons, and their unpredictable behaviour is disturbing for many children

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I have detested clowns for most of my life - especially those with the painted faces - I cannot see below that paint to see the person and that is extremely unpleasant, in my mind. Oddly, I like mimes and have no problem with most masques.

They strike me as being evil - or violent - or wicked - or dangerous - or malevolent - I do not find them to be funny nor entertaining. It's not something that someone told me about, it's an aversion that comes from within my twisted psyche.

Jack Handey (of Deep Thoughts) on clowns:

To me, clowns aren't funny, In fact, they're kind of scary. I've wondered where this started, and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus, and a clown killed my dad.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

They've always creeped me out, but they don't really scare me per se. Not like monkeys, anyway.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 02:00 (twenty-two years ago)

the image that Dan posted is definitely the scariest image evah

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the most horrific thread evah! They just give me th eutter creeps, even thinking about them makes me feel funny. Imagine how awful it was when a few of us went shopping on the way to ATP and a bloody clown was stacking shelves in Sainsburys!! I nearly shat myself.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a bit of a coulophobe. I think I spelled that wrong. There's one comes into work sometimes. On stilts.

alix (alix), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(Why are little girls with white dresses and plaintive voices [normally slightly echoed] so scary in movies?)

Cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes but what's scary is WHO PAINTED HIM! YEEEEARRGH!

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm creeped out by clowns too, and suprised this is so common.

What is it that makes people feel like this? Is it the exaggerated makeup/expressions? Obviously its worse when its an evil clown, like those ones in Attack of the Killer Clowns or whatever that B grade horror flick was called.

Oh and Insane Clown Posse. Now they just creep me the fuck right out. I think its just the music though.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Clowns really don't bother me.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

What about clowns that put their asses in pies? :\

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Depends on whether or not I planned to eat that pie. My pie, sure, I'd be upset. My ex's pie, well, hey, have a seat and let me get you some extra cream.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i am yet to see one that has actually been funny. they ARE creepy most of the time ( but then, i think that ronald mcdonald is creepy ).
i worked with a woman who claimed to be terrified of clowns, but when i visited her home once, i saw that she had a collection of clown dolls. she also looked vaguely like a clown herself, with big clowny hair and she plucked her eyebrows so they were very 'up and round'.

donna (donna), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 04:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't afraid of them until I read "It" by Stephen King. They've made me uncomfortable ever since.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i played drums for a guy who was a clown and he was fucking insane.
i am creeped out ever since.
how insane was he? look at www.fuglytheklown.com

Orbit (Orbit), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 07:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The film It is pretty scary right up until the clown turns into something else.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

donna, your clown-lady's professed freaked-outness just shows how powerful the pressure is to mouth the clichés of klown kondemnation

Just stare at that clown a while and you'll imagine that it starts talking to you. No! It will wink at you. Just do it.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 31 October 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm only scared of rapping clowns from Detroit.

A Girl Named Sam (thatgirl), Saturday, 1 November 2003 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

The only clown I've ever felt The Fear from was John Wayne Gacy, and that's because he was a serial killer, not because he was a clown. I never felt fearful of clowns when I was a young girl. I feared more realistic things such as getting kidnapped in the middle of the night, the Mexican Mafia, burglars, murderers, and arsonists. A clown? Mere child's play (pardon the phrasing!) in comparison.

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 1 November 2003 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, motherfuckers be clowning all the time. You can't be scared of that.

I was going to say I think that 'deliberately' scary clowns aren't actually scary, but then I looked at that picture again and got scared.
