someone who can do good back-rub

How does one go about this? I get GREAT backrubs but I just can't give them. I can pet backs fine, but I don't know how to massage.

Same here -- I am no good at feeling knots and whatnot.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone who knows to thread!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

you need a bathrobe.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

You need strong hands.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Consider the contours of the person's bones, and how the muscles go along them, and where the muscles will be stretched tightest. You want to press where the bone isn't; you also want to manipulate the muscle rather than the skin, so once you've got your fingers placed at any given point you want to dig in and push/pull, rather than moving them across the skin itself. Use the hard part near the top of your thumb and the first knuckle on the thumb; don't be afraid to exert force, and use as much as you can without making the person say "ow."

Also, work in a specific direction, as if you want to push the stress out through the limbs or the tops of the shoulders.

Wise advice from Mr. Wolk there. Our family is big on backrubs in general -- always good for tension release!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Since I have no idea what the other Raggetts look like, I am forced to imagine a half-dozen Neds sitting around the living room watching tv and giving each other back massages.

(OK, now I am imagining this tableau painted on velvet. Did someone slip something in my coffee this morning?)

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

You are completely and utterly out of your goddamned mind.

Other Raggetts in full from the Xmas of 2000:

My dad Mike and mom Michelle, and my sister Kara, as well as me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, you all look very relaxed! You must have some very effective back massage techniques indeed!

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Would somebody please Photoshop the above photo so they all have Ned's head?

nedfan, Thursday, 13 February 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh dear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, surely, surely you saw that coming, Ned. It's the first thing I thought of.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 13 February 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I did not. I really should know better, shouldn't I.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Get a bit of a rhythm going, it's more relaxing that way

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Works for backrubs too

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned looks evil and scheming in that picture.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHAHAHA...oh, er, never mind.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

You have a lovely family, Ned. Your sister's cute, your mum looks great for her age, and your dad's tie is bangin'

but yeah, you look like you're going to give them a can of peanuts which will spring open a rubber snake instead, where are your hands, EVIL

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't someone going to do that photoshopping?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

where are your hands, EVIL

Watch out family, he has a giant HATCHET behind his back!

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned is on the verge of unleashing his version of world domination in that picture (ie, an evil, evil fart).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned's nickname is now "EVIL"?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

someone upload it for me and i'll do it. hehehehhee.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, your sister's a cutey! ROWR! (I honestly never actually say "ROWR", but hey...)

In case somebody is still checking this thread for info on the backrub thing...

...you also want to manipulate the muscle rather than the skin, so once you've got your fingers placed at any given point you want to dig in and push/pull, rather than moving them across the skin itself.

One thing that is essential for effective manipulation of muscle-rather-than-skin is oil...baby oil works very well. This helps drastically reduce friction on the skin and allows for more thorough muscle manipulations.

Works for backrubs too. ;-)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

best double-entendre thread EVAH!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone want to upload

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, your sister's a cutey! ROWR!

I told people that before on here and nobody believed me, the punks. Now they can learn and understand. (My sister can also drink most everyone here under the table, while knitting.)

Watch out family, he has a giant HATCHET behind his back!

Lizzie Borden, the transsexual sequel.

your dad's tie is bangin'

My dad is a tie fanatic -- I'm guessing that's one of his many Xmas ties. He, my mom and my sister are also sock fiends when it comes to crazy colors, designs, etc., and my mom's fave Xmas gift this past holiday was the pair of orange Chuck Taylors she got.

someone upload it for me and i'll do it. hehehehhee.

But but but it's RIGHT THERE!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I have photoshopped it, so ya know if you want to post it for me I'll send it to you.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, clarity. Hold on here...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Behold! Chris comes through again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Wish the darn photo didn't make me look like I have a double-chin, but all is vanity etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What a model family!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Pillars of the community, salt of the earth, etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 February 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Now they all look like thhey're going to spring evil hatchet snakes on the world, and the tie is even more bangin' !!! It's longer too

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 13 February 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Nickalicious is right. The use of oil is key. As is a constant flow of movement.

You can only give a good back rub if you want to. I often get bored as massaging a semi-naked boyfriend's with oil has a tendency to make my mind wander... The temptation to rub oil on myself takes over and then slip, slip, slide!!

Really should have added a noun in there.
