Symptoms of war-weariness

so today I'm in beautiful downtown Athens and I see this bum who looks exactly like Bush if Bush had a handlebar moustache, wore one of those fisherman ski-knit caps, and had an eyepatch. so I go up to this girl Emily, who trife knows if he sees this thread, and say "that bum with the eyepatch looks exactly like Bush" and she says "Bush who?" and I say "PRESIDENT BUSH" and she looks at him and says "I don't really see it" and I say "I guarantee their skulls are identical" and she says "what the fuck are you talking about" and I say "um, maybe he's undercover or something. deep cover. the president." and then stammer "it's the war. it's getting to me." and then wander off to eat sushi. So - has this happened to anyone else?

also, long story short, I don't think I'll be posting to anymore war threads as I'm already burnt out and we've only just begun, etc, etc.

also, how awful is it of me to think whenever I plant stuff for next week "thank god I don't live in new york or d.c. since here I can plan stuff for next week and not have to add the unspoken caveat IF I'M ALIVE NEXT WEEK"?

It is pretty pointless to worry about such things

Oops (Oops), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm really tired in general and tired of the war talk. It's like a big relationship argument that goes on very very late into the night and you think you might die of sleepiness but you have to keep talking. So, then you start just talking nonsense.

that doesn't mean the other person is going away though

Speaking of growing things, I'm interested in growing basil this spring. Any tips?

jm (jtm), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

plant stuff!

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just pissed they keep threatening to put everybody on call for deployment or weekend shifts except ME. Sorry young single guy who is in good health and wants to be part of the action, you can't volunteer for anything because you're too valuable at this desk here. POOP.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

What is "part of the action"?

Tracking your ass, you punk.

Answering secure phones in the desert.

Hmm, reminds me a bit of what my dad was doing for his final Navy job circa 1990-1992 (he wasn't doing that himself, just overseeing a variety of folks who did similar).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 February 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

opsec millar opsec!

yeah, well if any of it were actually plausible I wouldn't talk about it

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 13 February 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm totally sick of talking about the war, and at the same thinking about it more and more.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I give it no thought whatsoever. I mean, what_is_the_point?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

My tip for growing basil, however, would be to use a decent sized pot, and to watch that you don't under or over water. That was the most bland horticultural advice ever.

alix (alix), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I get actually kind of excited feeding off all the news, as perverse as that sounds, probably because there are some very stressful things in my life right now, that I'd rather lose myself and leech off of this collective mass anxiety than face my own. It's easier to worry over, even though I know that's an illusion. Procrastination via distraction is so lame.

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I love basil.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I have become utterly unphased by the prospect of war. I do have a tendency to stop worrying about things the more threatening they become, until I start worrying that I'm not worried enough. I figure there's not whole lot I can do, so I may as well carry on as I am and not think about it. Personally I prefer rosemary to basil.

alix (alix), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting choice. How do you feel about lemongrass?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 13 February 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

gee how bout those knicks?
