Dammit Ethan, I thought this was going to be a thread about Thora Birch. You're weird.

Josh, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Has anyone ever stung their hand trying to steal honey from a bee?

Greg, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bees are stupid suicidal little fucks.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have never been stung by bee nor wasp so I am afraid of them (esp. worried abt Kenneth Halliwell's mother...)

Andrew L, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And the sign of their consent to have sex with you was WHAT again exactly Tracer?

mark s, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wonder how many bee pelts it would take to make a bee-fur coat?
P'raps you could dress a fly in a bee pelt so then it could survive the winter!
I wonder if they like being stroked?
How do they fly?

"I never thought it would be the bees, they've always been our friend"
~ Micheal Caine in 'Killer Bees'

DavidM, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My pheromones or something. I've met countless people who like Andrew L have never been stung. I who am allergic however have been stung 10-12 times. Not all by bees; I have occasionally had the pleasure of being stung by the more respectable yellowjacket and a few horribly efficient hornets.

and tobacco really does "ease the swelling"...

John Belushi as a Killer Bee.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Friday, 31 August 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they don't usually sting you 'cause they die if they do, everyone knows that, so i walked thru a swarm of them by this tree at my mother's house. 1of em stung me on the forehead & when I went into the house I saw myself in the mirror & my eyes looked like they were about 1' apart, it was freakish! then these ppl came round to visit so I went & hid in the house...it's what i would normally do anyway but this time i figured i had a good excuse...I told my mum & my sister "Pretend I'm not here" so my sister called out my name loudly & made me come out & confront them & everyone laughed at me.

duane, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I wanna know what happened to that bee-girl in that "No Rain" clip.

nathalie, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

why is everyone only focusing on the stinging? THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL

ethan, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ethan is right. they are beautiful. every year i get all kind of happy and excited when i see the first bee, fuzzy buzzy little creatures. they are kind of dumb though, they always fly into the house and then can't get out again.

katie, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You can knock bees unconscious by cupping your hands around them when they're crawling on something, then shaking them around really hard. They won't sting you. And if even if they do it doesn't matter cause they're so beautiful.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That is the best piece of advice I have ever heard. Except for "Don't put your fingers in the sex places".

Nick, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nine months pass...
More fun with bees - One night I found one circling a light bulb in the kitchen. Just for a laugh I thought I'd turn the light off to confuse it. It seems that without the light on he gave up flying (like, er, OK Goodnight!) and just fell out of the air. I turned the light back on and he wakes up and oh so slowly circles back up to the light again...
Of course I had a good few minutes fun with him by putting an old jar on the floor and trying to land him in it. Once he was safely in the jar I let him out, a little stunned but unharmed.

Simeon, Monday, 1 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Unfun with bees:

Yesterday, when I got out of my car, I opened the driver's side door to discover that WASPS had built a 10-15-celled WASPS' NEST in the opening between my door and the car frame (jamb?)!!!! The wasp/ who must have built it was crawling out of there as I opened my door; that's how I noticed. So I knocked the nest to the ground with my car keys. The ickiest thing about wasps' nests is how they are big and round but then attached to their 'foundations' by just a skinny thread of nest-material. How the heck I didn't notice it when I got INTO my car makes my skin crawl every time I think about it.

I am quite afraid of insects.

four months pass...
My father moved my car into the garage for the winter and when he opened the door, about a dozen neatly stacked hickory nutmeats fell out of the same hollow in the car door where the wasps had built the nest this summer.

six months pass...
Inside Nothing

A sun-fed engine, the inside

constant, a flower taken
whole. In winter our wings

move faster, to keep the sun
inside, inside nothing

& we fill the nothing with suns,

line them up,
swallow sap, swallow

field, drop by drop, each stem
a pump. Rose to rose to rose to
rose to rose to rose to rose, calyx &

anther, all summer

gone. We move
still faster, fields grow

constant, inside
the color of heat. Clinging we
pull our bodies

across a chain of bodies, become

the chain, climb nothing,
always
up, toward suns, line them up

inside us, a flower taken whole,

a field built inside. It rises.
Each blade, each sun.

btw, this happened to me once while I was tripping. I'm not allergic to bee stings, but there's still sorta a full-body response to being stung that was profoundly altered because of the acid. to be honest, I'd do it again if it didn't mean intentionally killing a bee, because that would be a bad trip.
