so who has the best reason for not going to their local anti-war demo?

nancy has a class today that she cannot miss, otherwise she loses credits which will fuck with her financial aid and eventually our ability to pay our rent. my reason is a lot less good: she would feel bad if i went by myself then.

we both feel like bad citizens.

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

it is snowing pretty hard in DC and I have to go to work soon.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm working and the cold air is really bad for my sinuses anyway. (I am on an antibiotic to begin with.) When the weather warms up, maybe I'll go.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't want to spend all day stuck on my own in a big shouty crowd. And I slept in too late anyway.

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't even know we had one and you'd sooner find me at a Phish concert then a demostration.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

because any rally reminds me of leni refinshtal and anyways we tried this in '68 and it didnt really work.

anthony easton (anthony), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

My knee is totally fuX0red and I literally cannot walk more than a couple of yards without having excruciating pain. I still feel terribly guilty though -- I would like to donate some money to the anti-war effort but I'm not sure of the appropriate channel.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to work in Central London today. Walking homewards w/ the crowds I was v. sorry not to have gone - the vibe in town was surprisingly, unexpectedly 'peaceful' - we should always be on the brink of armageddon if this is what it does to ppl!

Andrew L (Andrew L), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I should add to the above that all of my work with activism has made me more cynical and hateful towards the left.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

had to go to work as my supervisor wants to see the stuff I've been working on monday. I've done it and that was good.

At 5:30 pm one of my colleagues came back from the demo to check email. she told me she sent me (and other work colleagues) an email abt it and if I wanted to go. it didn't arrive (she prob typed my surname wrong) but I still don't know if i would have gone.

I wish i could have gone.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

On the other hand, I think I would have liked the London protest. I would have gone to that.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i had to go to work this morning.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't have the strength for it, emotionally or physically. I feel kind of bad about it, and will do something like send a letter or two instead, as a sort of penance.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure if there IS even an anti-war demonstration going on here.

Of course, I'm ignorant.

Curtis Stephens, Saturday, 15 February 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

there is no local anti-war demo. you don't tend to get those in rural republican areas. if there was i don't think i'd go, because i'm not sure what we should do instead of going to war.

Maria (Maria), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I am absorbed in local matters like laundry. I saw the police horses and Dept. of Corrections bus earlier today so I feel involved.

felicity (felicity), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I had to get my mum a birthday present.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

there was one in NY, it passed my office this morning. from what i saw, mixed crowd -- some of the "usual suspects" (i.e., the Che t-shirt nothing-is-left-enough-for-me LES brigade), but also a lot of mainstream people. as i said, though, i couldn't go b/c i have work to get done.

Tad (llamasfur), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I couldn't find any indication that there was to be one in DC today.

j.lu (j.lu), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Neither did I but I assumed but now I am realizing that there wasn't one so I feel a lot better because I have been kicking myself all day for not going.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Saturday, 15 February 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pro-war and I can't wait until we start seeing people come home in bags

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 15 February 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone who i met intending to go was a fucking moron

zemko (bob), Sunday, 16 February 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

The Colorado protest was in Colorado Springs, a town about an hour and a half from me--plus, it was snowing--and also, the Colorado Springs event looked totally cheesy, like BOZ SKAGGS was performing or something equally depressing. I would have participated in the London protest, or anything else but here, even.

Mandee, Sunday, 16 February 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

BOZ SCAGGS!?? i'd've gone man

duane, Sunday, 16 February 2003 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

haha so i went downtown today for some coffee...and there was an anti-war demo! my guilt is relieved.

jess (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 16 February 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

the vibe in town was surprisingly, unexpectedly 'peaceful' - we should always be on the brink of armageddon if this is what it does to ppl!

That's M.A.D. for you.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 16 February 2003 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i was grounded. but i dont think we had a anti-war demo anyway

Chupa-Cabras (vicc13), Sunday, 16 February 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Last summer Mr Cheney urged his boss not to go down the UN route, saying that it led only into a diplomatic bog from which no good could come.

I am really REALLY angry at myself right now.

Living right off Hollywood Boulevard, the largest demonstration in the history of the terminally divided city of Los Angeles since the 60s (organizers: 100,000; police: 30-50,000) was taking place, but I had to go to work since I missed Tuesday. Driving home took a VERY long time, more agonizing than usual, as it was ending. I still wanted to go and at least see the dispersing crowds on the corner of Sunset and La Brea, but I was so tired and had a migraine, so I lay down on the couch and took an unplanned nap instead, waking up at 8 PM. D'oh!

The next is planned for March 8th. Hope to catch that, at least. Is that when *your* next one is happening?? :looking at all ILXors from everywhere::

So that's my lame reason. I'm even MORE angry at Fox News though. I kept watching them in the morning, waiting to see if they would cover the global protests taking place in Europe at the time. When they finally got around to it in the 2-minute segment (as opposed to the special hour CNN was giving), the bimbo-broadcaster said "There are a lot of people marching against the war in Europe. But anti-war sentiment may not be as strong as one may think." !!!!!!!! Then she asked a commentator about it, who said, exactly, the govt's of Spain and all other Euro nations, except for misbehaving Germans/French, were with the US. Never mind the fact that TWO MILLION or so people were marching against the war in Madrid at the moment.

Then they had an advert for how they are giving "fair and balanced" news, b4 the commercial.

Vic (Vic), Sunday, 16 February 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

In the UK the 8th March demos will be local, city by city affairs, but hopefully that will mean even more people turn out. Details here soon or from your local STWC.

HA anyone else noticed that stopthewar.com redirects to a porn site.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 16 February 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It was my birthday the day before and I was hungover. I also needed to tidy up my house in preparation for the huge party I threw on Saturday. And I generally thought it would do no good whatsoever in terms of actually stopping the war and would do no good other than relieving my own conscience, which was clearish anyway as I've been to three in the past couple of years.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 February 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a phobia of crowds. And whistles. Which is a shame, as otherwise I would have had a placard sporting Sebastian Flyte and his teddy from "Brideshead Revisted". With the slogan "WAUGH, NOT WAR."

Dickon Edwards (Dickon Edwards), Monday, 17 February 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Something like this, in fact:

Dickon Edwards (Dickon Edwards), Monday, 17 February 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

And yes, I realise that's what many of the Countryside Alliance look like, but we'll just have to draw a veil over that connotation.

Dickon Edwards (Dickon Edwards), Monday, 17 February 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom flew into town around the same time the protests were starting, and she's not so good with subways, so I couldn't go.

hstencil, Monday, 17 February 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I was recovering from friday evening's emergency surgery. Do I win?
