i always forget what videos i want to rent and end up renting ones i've seen a million times, so i started an elaborate list for the next time i go to the video store. it consists of:

1) videodrome, which i have never seen and was never in a rush to as i am not huge fan of cronenberg, but enough varied outward suggestions have finally nudged me into wanting to watch. i hope it's better than scanners.

2) the avengers; the 1998 remake one, which i actually have seen when it first came out on video and has haunted me ever since. the part with the bear costumes sticks out like a big budget jeff koons piece or something. i must see it again.

3) shallow grave, which i've never seen and have always been indifferent to, but i really liked trainspotting and it just sits there and tempts me every time i go to the video store. what if it's really good? i'm a sucker for talky crime movies anyway.

so are these shit are not? oh, and if i rent two more i take advantage of their clever 'five for five' deal, so suggest other films i should see and i'll consider thusly.

#1 rent, #s 2 and 3, don't.

DG, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

rent all three . esp. shallow grave

Yeah, see Shallow Grave.
Videodrome is good, but save it for another day. Watch shallow Grave first.

The Avengers movie was a horrible disappointment. DO rent some of the eps with Emma Peel (though Honor Blackman isn't so bad) from the original series. Then go rent to the movie remake and be disappointed.

go the cronenberg route, scap the rest, and spend the money you saved on a decent cup of coffee.

DG rule of good cinema: never watch anything that involves the 'Trainspotting Team'.

DG, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronans Rule of Cinema:It's an over-rated medium and I'd rather listen to music, which I can do at any time, whether I'm out or in.

Ronan, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what's all this second-guessing bullshit? and you're telling me not to rent a movie i've already seen? fuck that. recommend two more, dammit.

ethan, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh and i had not heard that this 'avengers' film was considered a 'horrible disappointment', as i was living in a cave at the time of it's release, and then went back into that cave in december when all critics declared it to be the worst film of that aforementioned year. also since i was in the cave i missed all the critics recommending that a rent an episode of the series, and therefore was unaware of this as well.

Calm down Ethan, or I'll trawl through the ILM archives again and prove to the world that your judgement isn't always sound.

the only movie i've watched recently is velvet goldmine. repeatedly. shoot me, but only while i'm watching, so i can die happy.

You ask for a comment, I give a comment...

Shallow Grave is pretty great, but here's a technicality: when D Boyle etc. made it, they were not yet the Trainspotting team. And Videodrome is one of the greatest films EVAH.
