behaving like a girl (or boy)

sorry if this has already been discussed before (it's my first thread!)

i was just wondering if anyone ever catches themselves behaving in a particularly 'girly' or 'manly' (as dictated by most of society) way. do you mean to? is it contrived? is it just the way you are? does it annoy others/yourself?

for example, the buzzy-fuzzy bees. now, that's something i would just have exclaimed had i seen a bee in public. i now feel that it was unnecessarily twee or girly way of putting it and am a bit (though not very) ashamed. i will readily admit to having a twee, sentimental side to my personality. i'm the worst with cats, i just babble to them in a crap high-pitched voice, which usually embarrasses whoever i am with, as well as any passers-by.

the cats themselves don't seem to mind though.

wait, are you saying it's girly to think bees are beautiful? it's not a cutesy twee thing, i find them to be genuinely powerful and touching.

ethan, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no - bees are ace. i genuinely love most creatures. i was just making the point that it's maybe a bit crap to express yourself in terms such as fuzzy buzzy thing (descriptive but undeniably girly), which if anything has a less powerful impact than saying they are beautiful and moving.

i'm with you 100 percent on the bees!

But bees are buzzy and fuzzy. That's no-ones fault but their own, and calling tham as such is - like ridicule - nothing to be scared of.

Though it's funny how acting 'girly' if you are a girl is often frowned upon while girls who display achetyal, cliched 'manly' traits - like, for example, drinking a pint in one, liking and being knowledgable about football and generally being 'one of the boys' is considered something to be applauded.
When a girl announces, with no little pride usually, that she is 'just like one of the lads really' I just think 'why? Why's that something for a girl to be proud of?'
That said, overly silly-silly, dippy, girly-girls get on my nerves as well.

1. I liked "fuzzy buzzy" which is why I stole it.
2. I do or say "girlstuff" if it'll amuse or entertain ppl (or me). I suppose it's kinda contrived but it's also long engrained: ie I've been doing it for 30+ years.
3. As I work in an all-woman office, it is also necessary for me to be the anti-cutesy, who talks abt crushing puppies' hedz with rocks etc. It's a tiresome job, but someone has to do it.
4. Ethan yes but also can't you wust admit beez iz adorable'n'cuddlycoo?

Bees would be a lot more cute if they didn't have nasty stings that hurt, and of course kill them at the same time. But as for 'girly' stuff, I refuse to recognise gender differences so DG behaves like DG behaves. If that involves talking cutie nonsense at small furry animals, so be it. Look at the fuzzy-wuzzy kitten-witten!

DG, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, no, no, bees are very cute, i was just making sure katie wasn't implying that's all they had going for them, because it obviously isn't. just so i don't damn this thread to bee theory instead of interesting gender politics issues, let me answer it and say that i tend to teeter both ends of the spectrum on that. it's almost shockingly exciting to be laddish sometimes, but i can also certainly be cutesy twee with the best of them. and bees handily offer both, aren't they the best?

ethan, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Theres an even more general thread somewhere here on behaving the way people encourage you to implicitly by their expectations. I know my friends always expect me to say something controversial or be intolerant, and although they pretend unconvincingly that its me doing it on my own, we all know I'm just fulfilling their expectations. Everybody does it.......

Ethan, I may be 'way off beam' here, but could it be that bees are a metaphor for something else?

maryann, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Anal sex, right?

Greg, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I act girly around boys and am quiet and wry around girls, which makes me feel less feminine if they are giggly.

Lyra, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Acting 'manly' is for pussies and faggots. Try any of that shit round here and I'll kick your ass. Too bad none of you bitch-ass punks have the balls to do it.

dave q, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm - am not a v. gurly bloke but at same time do not like drinking, fighting, cars, or talking abt shagging. Not sure where this leaves me (fucked, as per, prob.)

Andrew L, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bees are jsut plain killer fucks, they impact nill on my psot-gender approach to life.

Geoff, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have been accused of acting girly more than a few times. It's true, too. Basically I'd love it if I could just be a fop. Just the other day I had three female friends stating they'd like to give me a makeover.
