worst music you have pretended to like to impress hopeless crush?

Or: am I pathetic?

I have a mad mad mad crush on a 17 year old boy (I am nearly 20). It's bad enough I fancy someone who isn't even old enough to get into pubs, but there is much worse. He is a huge fan of punk music, nu-punk or whatever they call it. To date I have:

bought a whole blink 182 album and even listened to it before giving it away to oxfam.
gone to a jimmy eat world concert with him (and about 5 other girls who follow him around, he's not even that attractive, he's just one of those blokes who ONLY has female friends)
listened to about 5 million minidiscs of truly crappy punk bands and laughed at 10 million terrible 'ad-libs' on terrible live bootlegs.

Why? why? why?!? Why has god chosen to punish me like this?! The worst thing is that he told me he would never fancy anyone like me, and that he has an exceptionally low libido anyway and hardly ever thinks about sex/girls/relationships. This is going slightly off-topic but please feel free to give me relationship advice anyway, such as 'you are pathetic'. I want my old brain back again...

kathy spider, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think my only question is this -- exactly why do you have this crush on him again?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Maybe he's bendable.

Graham, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

17 yr. old boys *are* generally more bendable. Which makes Ned's achievement that much greater.

jess, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You're pathetic.
But that's okay, it happens to the best of us. I pretended to like Alien Sex Fiend and The Cramps once upon a time. Sheesh!
Stop doing it to yourself, just walk away. Quickly.

DavidM, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

1. Iz he cute?
2. Have you tried treating him with un certain cool disdain? "Deep" boyz = pathetic roll-over rubbish, generally, when this old-as-eve ploy wheeled out.
3. If he tru-punXoR like me, his libido will kick in big-time when he reaches c.35: can you stick around?

mark s, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm not gonna hold age against you, but dude... if he's 17 and likes Blink, you're looking at a fraud... dude... please. Stop.

JM, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nooo, it's MUCH more fun to make him squirm instead. I have a huge crush on a 17 year old boy as well (I'm a year younger) and he plays violin and only listens to classical music. I told him that he was going to have to be the John Cale to my Lou Reed (and then had to explain the reference, of course) and he looked quite worried. Delightful.

Lyra, Saturday, 1 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That is so close to being the best Gay Joke i've ever heard...

JM, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I pretended to tolerate Ricky Martin to please the last ex. Her: "You don't like 'Livin' La Vida Loca'?" Tadeusz: "Um, ... um, it's ... well, it's better than that dance music you usually listen to."

The line stopped when I had to listen to the Rosie O'Donnell Christmas album. Being forced to listen to the Rosie O'Donnell Christmas should be considered cruel and unusual punishment ... I think that James Madison and Alexander Hamilton would have agreed with me. :-)

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

1. He is adorably cute. and very bendable. I can't quite remember why I have the crush on him but if we could explain these things, the world would be a much saner place. He doesn't like blink THAT much...
2. 'Uncertain disdain'? it sounds good but he doesn't even think of himself of cool, or deep or whatever.
3. Can I wait until he's 35?! Um, no. I may be pathetic, but I'm not that desperate. However I think the whole 'I have no libido' thing was just to throw me off the scent. He clearly fancies one of our friends (she is gorgeous and also likes blink. I am ugly and like ella fitzgerald.)

Oh well, obviously I am doomed until I can find another, more socially acceptable crush. Well, it's either that or get back with the ex, who has excellent taste in music, yet manages to define the term 'wanker'. And he's not very bendable.

kathy spider, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

are you saying ella fitzgerald was ugly?

ethan, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Um, no. I was being melodramatic and saying *I* was ugly. And that I like a different kind of music to him.

Nothing about ella fitzgerald at all, except that I love her music. Sorry for any confusion caused.

kathy spider, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

statement in question: 'i am ugly and like ella fitzgerald'

so you can see where confusion would arise.

ethan, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Is liking the same music really so important to him? or to you?

Lyra, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

"Everyone's partial to a 17 year old boy every now and again,
18 year old boys, though - who'd touch them?
I was cute and bendable, now I'd gladly,
Be younger again to get in with Kathy,

The girl with the John Cale taste."

The offending instrument then being ripped from the player's hands and used to beat Mr. Murdoch about the head. In the ensuing flood of tears from the audience at how people could be so cruel, I get in a lifeboat and float away.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Couldn't the gay one in Wu Tang rap that? And then they could say written by Ned Ragget. I did nothing really, he told me to put that first line down.

Ronan, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I reckon men wuv girls who don't like the same music as them as it is more of a challenge & they can try and make the girl wuv their stuff. But what do I know?

Emma, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Skrewdriver.

Nick, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It's impossible to make the girl wuv the stuff. I'm too lazy for these sort of challenges anyway....

Ronan, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

That was my motivation and it failed. Several years on and the last record she bought was "Help! I'm A Fish" by the Little Trees and I think it is brilliant. THE HUNTER IS CAPTURED BY THE GAME etc.

Liking their shitey music is actually the one line I will not cross for a crush. I'll listen to it sure but like it? I say thee nay.

I had a crush on a guy from Avri1 Lav1gne's hometown (which he constantly announced to others), and whenever we went out for karaoke I would sing her songs because he always responded so positively. I'm not proud of this.

He also had no sense of rhythm and would clap along visibly arrhythmically to songs he liked. It looked like it was trying to catch flies between his hands at moments with no relation to the beat.
