Three Days Without Power or Heat in Freezing Weather...C/D?

Okay, so, uh, ice storms that freeze entire cities and cause branches to fall all over the place cutting off electricity to half of the city's populace (approx. 120,000 people with no power)...not much fun. The thermostat in the nickalicious' house reached 40 degrees fahrenheit at one point. Heaters, keep-water-out-of-the-basement pumps, traffic signals, etc. not hap'nin.

So, well, nasty weather that effectively shuts down heavily populated areas...classique or deaud? And any ILXors got some stories to tell about past-or-present(-or-even-future) extreme weather experiences?

Used to happen all the time when I lived in the wilds of Upstate NY. Two words: LAKE EFFECT. We lived at the top of a quite remote hill, and when the power went down, we could be without electricity for days. No heat, no hot water - in fact, NO water fullstop cause we lived on a well without an electric pump - and we'd all have to ski over to neighbours houses half a mile away to see if anyone had any phone service... not fun!

Unless you're a kid and enjoying the snow days!

Moncton went 5 days without power this winter Im informed. Lake effect is a pain in the ass having spent time too near to Lake Simcoe or Bay of Fundy. Makes me why anyone would want to live in Buffalo or the Bruce Penisula.

Haha, nickalicious. I had power throughout the entire ordeal. Of course, my street was shutdown because an overwhelming amount of downed trees and detritus.

I was driving down Rose on Sunday and my path was blocked by a gigantic flaming tree that spanned both lanes.

I went on a walk down Rose Street that was quite the adventure. My adrenaline gland gave me a big shot every time the wind blew and I looked up to see tree branches lurching around as though they would fall on me.

I went to check on my mom's house on Mentelle Park, and I got to see the top half of a tree about 60 feet tall fall onto somebody's car, as well as a tree branch that impaled itself into the squishy median as though it were some massive Excalibur waiting for some giant Balrog to come pluck it from the Earth.

(Y'see, Cprek's my homie, he & me live in the same town...thus this may explain why you don't know about things like The Rose Street Tree/Power Line Massacre and such, whereas we fully do. Nanny nanny boo boo.)

The falling limbs were a big problem. By Sunday afternoon I realized that I shouldn't go outside without wearing my Viking helmet.

I saw some fratboy's SUV get turned into a hotdog bun when a 40 foot tree crushed it down the center!

Not literally of course.

Ah, too late, I'm hungry for a hot dog now.

Ice storms to hotdogs in 8 posts. Remarkable.

Chow down, chow hounds.
