And I'm not even talking about any ILE posters!

Germany 1 England 5: this is what being a fair-weather fan is all about, frankly. We wuvved it. But no ILE thread! Reactions? Comments? Optimism? Cynicism? Or is it all just a bit silly compared to club football?

Yeah,. I cd heard a lot of shouting around the place last night. I wondered if the laundrette had caught fire again. Is this a football question? Are Germany good and England not, and when we beat them, it's exciting? Sfunny, I didn't know they played football in Germany. Did they just start recently? Do they play cricket too?

good excuse for racist media coverage, no?

[phonecall: it is mum]
Mum: Oh mark mark, did you watch the football?
mark s: of course not!
mum: it was wonderful!! five-one!! a marvellous night: and your father is all smiles this morning!!
mark s: well, I suppose I have a reason to look on it a bit more appreciatively then. I was watching Madonna.
[impasse of distaste is achieved]

I was in a pub last night with some friends and they were all watching the sport but I got scared by all the big shouting men and had to go hide and have a coffee and read the newspaper. I went back just at the end. I'm glad England won because otherwise all the big shouting men would have gotten angry and smashed things (I'm not sure if this is really an appropriate reason for supporting your country but it's the best you're going to get out of me).

My brother explained it all "If England win, then big men will come and hug you and maybe ask you if you're gay but not in a threatening way. If they lose, then you will get beaten up"

I love those football chants though "Give me St George in my heart, keep me English/Give me St George in my heart, I say/Give me St George in my heart, keep me English/Keep me English to my dying day/No surrender/No surrender/No surrender to the IRA (scum)" That's not at all terrifying to hear. Oh no.

Oh, this thread's about soccer ...

More confirmation that I have a really dirty mind ...

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, it was a perfectly planned trap to get people to look in. You know, if it had said soccer in the title I wouldn't have even clicked!

Lyra, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You know, I don't think it's necessary to see last night's magnificent result in a nationalistic context. It was a great result, we played some truly world class attacking football - anyone who saw last night's game with a modicum of appreciation for football would have enjoyed it, regardless of what country they come from (with the obvious exception of Germany, of course).

The fact that it was an England team that performed that way was an added bonus, not to mention making it all the more unbelievable.

5:1 - Somebody pinch me!

Trevor, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now all you have to do once you finish up the group is be able to beat Italy, France and Argentina next year. D'OH!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well of course it was fantastic. Stymied the tabloids a bit - not really able to use those 'boshed' etc puns this time round.

And so little expectation to start - that first goal promised the routing we can normally expect, at best a one-all draw and humiliation at penalties, but no!

Goal after goal after goal!

Exhileration, elation, jubilation!

Happy times. Ahh.

Magnus, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was heartbroken. I love it when England lose.

DG, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah where was I watching the game last night. Glasgow of course. sometimes it's worth putting up with the abuse. (Oh and I wanted Scotland to win too.)

Billy Dods, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It was great. I was pleased.

jel, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I planned not to watch it after deciding that I'd only ever be a crap fairweather football fan and not really like the game at all. However, ended up watching bits of it and feeling quite proud after we actually managed to hammer Germany (also because didn't we have a quite hollow victory over them sometime in 2000?). Also, all worth it for that bit they showed at the end of Lineker in the studio getting excited like everyone else. But aren't the Germans meant to be shit at the moment?

Bill, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It almost cheered me up after the Holland and U.S. losses. *sob*
