Steve, do you remember that list we made in the pub ages ago of footballers with stupid names? That one we made for no reason whatsoever (God, the precursor of so many ILE threads, come to think of it.) Well, I hope we remembered Mark Fish.

I want to get a little fish for my desk at work. Maybe a good ol' beta? I like fish, but I haven't had any in a long time because my kitties REALLY like fish and I just want to deprive them of any more fun. Do any of you have fish at work?

Missed opportunity of the day: page 7 of the Guardian. A pic of an 11'4" oarfish caught by a woman in Cleveland (north of England, not Ohio), in the company of her boyfriend Robert Herrings. Mark S may even remember me showing him a pic of an oarfish in a book I bought some months ago. It was of interest because its other less common name (not mentioned in the Guardian piece) is King Of The Herrings!

yes martin! they're beanie babies/beanie buddies made by Ty. They were all the rage for kids and bored housewives in the mid-90s, and some of them were selling for small fortunes. Bubbles the Fish got up to like $150, but now you can get em for a fiver.

Buy Bubbles the Beanie Buddy on eBay!

I sleep with my Bubbles the Fish every night. Oh, and my Humphrey the Camel.

My mother used a fish pillow, identical to the one shown above, for several moths after her mastectomy. Her left side and armpit were sore from the surgery and stitches and stuff, and there was a lot of pain whenever her arm touched the side of her body. So she walked around with the fish under her arm for months. People looked at her oddly, but I thought it was cool and creative.

I currently have a large fish (it's a rainbow trout) body-pillow on my bed - a get-well gift from some fishing friends. It contrasts wonderfully with the rest of my decor and I love it!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 4 November 2004 16:00 (twenty years ago)

Hey, people, serious question: what kind of fish might live in a lake somewhere in rural USA? The kind of fish a redneck or a Faulkner character or whoever would know.

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Also, what would a US peasant farmer type (go back 100 years if you want) do at the river? eg: 'washing the hogs'. would he do that?

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 17:15 (twenty years ago)

bass or trout, bellefox. catfish, too.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 5 November 2004 17:27 (twenty years ago)

What is 'washing the hogs'? Literally, you don't wash pigs...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Friday, 5 November 2004 17:32 (twenty years ago)

Precisely. OK. so what do you wash? How about geese? Can you imagine washing geese? I can't, but I like the phrase, wish I could use it.

I need to know, for something I am writing.

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 17:44 (twenty years ago)

re. the fish, let's see:

'lonely like the last trout in the lake'

'lonely like the last bass in the lake'

'lonely like the last catfish in the lake'

what do you think?

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

(If JtN ever sees this, he will be amused to see me carping, I mean, harping, on about fish imagery once again.)

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 17:45 (twenty years ago)

guitar tuna

http://images.misupply.com/products/full/Farleys/pocket_violin.jpg

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 5 November 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago)

actually, strike that, Mandolin/Violin Tuna

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 5 November 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

OK, I think I may have to go with 'catfish'.

Any other offers?

I still need to know what the farmer boys would do at the river.

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Get baptized.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 5 November 2004 17:53 (twenty years ago)

No, I can't use that. It has to be a daily sort of thing. Washing clothes would do, save that it sounds a bit feminine for these characters. I would rather an animal was involved, I think.

Seriously, I can't send this thing off till I have an activity for the rednecks.

One of them is called Wendell. Is that OK?

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I can't think of any instance of a group of farm boys ever washing an animal down by the river. No offense.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 5 November 2004 17:56 (twenty years ago)

OK, so what else would they do?

Or, shall I go with a surreal activity that they wouldn't do, for the heck of it?

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 17:57 (twenty years ago)

how about ... grain? corn? some other kind of food stuff?

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 17:59 (twenty years ago)

They'd fish. They'd camp. They'd swim...

Here you go! They lead the horses from one bank to another. The horses get neck deep like this:

ihttp://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&u=/041024/photos_od_afp/041024132537_ed0y6x9q_photo0&e=18

This would have to be a small river, not the Mississippi or anything.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:00 (twenty years ago)

Yay! This is getting better.

So - what would they say:

'we took the horses to the river'

'we led the horses to the river'

'we took the horses to walk the river'

'we took the horses neck deep in the river'

?

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 18:02 (twenty years ago)

...And then they shook themselves dry?

I don't know, belle. I'm no good with prose.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:07 (twenty years ago)

I think I may have cracked it, anyway. Thanks a lot, Plains.

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Being a boy from the south who often went down to the river, I'd venture "drown negroes".

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 November 2004 18:48 (twenty years ago)

That's awfully confessional of you there, Fork.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Friday, 5 November 2004 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah - it deserves its own thread.

the bellefox, Friday, 5 November 2004 19:21 (twenty years ago)
