Scenesters: Heroes or utter bastards?

And cliques. Are they grate! or are they just self-serving? I'm sorry, I have cliquey friends who I never see and become convinced are treating me with contempt and/or owe my dad £50 which they have single-handedly not managed to pay back in 3 months. I also don't like cliques because I finally realised I didn't want to be in one and I didn't think it was a wonderful thing. (Especially in, of all places, Winchester) So, anyone else fare differently?

I was in a clique once. We were known as the Kissy Girls, because we kissed everyone. Actually now that I think of it it wasnt such a clique, more like a club. It was pretty wonderful for the reason that boys were intimidated by us. But now we are more dispersed over the world, and less kissing goes on...

I am in a town where I don't 'get' the cliques. Here is a typical conversation:

Me: 'Let's go in here and have drink.' Friend: 'No, not MODAKS. The people think they're too cool.' Me: 'Huh?'

Or Friend: 'Those guys at Arc cafe think they're so cool, but they're just hippies.' Me: 'Wha? I didn't know they thought they were cool.'

But actually most of the time I'm not listening. So it would be more like:

Friend: 'Those guys at Arc cafe think they're so cool, but they're just hippies.' Friend: 'Maryann.' Friend: 'Maryann!!' Me: 'Wha?' Friend: 'Those guys at Arc cafe think they're so cool, but they're just hippies.' Me: '.... can you say that again? Sorry I only heard 'just hippies'.' Friend: 'Those guys -' Me: 'Do you think people's modern idea of true love is just an excuse to behave individualistically?'

yeah maryann you're so out of it you don't even realise that you're percieved as being a member of a "clique" yrself. & that you & yr clique think yr really "cool".

Cliques in all forms suck, especially if you are on the outside. But that suggests a longing to be part of the group. So cliques shouldn't really matter, the individual needs to be stronger.
