No, New Zealanders didn't rule the world. Just as well, bearing in mind what they did to the Maoris.

Yanks...are not nearly as irritating as people called Greg Scarth.

hey geoff. i figure you should move to: a) dunedin because its cheap and there are a couple of okay bands here. but considering you are an aussie, you'd probably hate the climate here. and there's a HUGE rugby culture thing going on here that might alienate you, i know it pisses me off. b) wellington if you are into the art scene - i couldn't tell u anything about the place from experience cos i've never been there but i've heard its great. c) maybe you would like Auckland since the climate is more aussie-esque. but its expensive and full of wankers and theres a giant hypodermic-needle-shaped thing poking out of the concrete which is rude as.

di, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I would like to point out that Australians and New Zealanders did not kill the Aboriginals and Maoris - It was the Brits that did that. So it's the Brits who are the bastards and they should have to pay Aboriginal students Abstudy and they should have to buy any land the Aboriginals and Maoris want that is currently owned by non-Aboriginal and non-Maori Australians and New Zealanders and give it to them.

And then the fucking Normans should give eveyone in Australian, New Zealand, Sth Africa, the UK, America etc. of Saxon, Celtic, Pictish, Anglo and combined Norman/Saxon ancestory lots of money to say sorry for invading, killing, raping, pillaging, infiltrating society, infiltrating language etc. in 1046 or whenever. Dirty bastards.

toraneko, Monday, 22 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

American indians seemed like a nice race of people, what a pity the americans killed them all.

Actually I did not make that one up, an american e-pal commented something along those lines to me.

another fun fact - this thread contains the inklings of me & greg scarth's plan to give d.g. gradually-changing nicknames which over time would eventually become to 'dou ghy', mocking his weight. Oh, and I remember a bunch of folks crying at a bar in Minneapolis when Princess Di perished. Which means that my fellow Americans are even more pathetic than the Brits.

Fluffy Bear (Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

what does canada get that's so bad? yeah, americans are pretty ignorant about it, but i'd say it has a rep as a lovely country with polite, strong-skating indie rockers who do more than their fair share of international peacekeeping.

It's apparently related to an old Onion article. I usually ignore it whenever it comes up.

Dan (Only Have Time For My Own Unfunny Jokes) Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 22:42 (nineteen years ago)

"who do more than their fair share of international peacekeeping."

Sadly, this is no longer true. Canada's military has been neglected for decades now. They don't have the money, equipment or manpower to provide anything more than a token presence in many peacekeeping missions. We invented the concept, but are no longer able to make any significant contribution. Like so many other things that we point to with pride in defining our national character, this image is a holdover from better days. The diplomatic corps, which was also once regarded as one of the best in the world, has sunk into disrepair due to neglect and complacence. Similarly, Canadians are very smug about the universal healthcare system. We sneer at the Americans and hold the idea of privatized healthcare in disdain. The truth is that the system is broken, and people routinely travel to the US for surgery, rather than contend with the increasingly long wait times north of the border. Too many Canadians die while waiting for operations that are available much quicker in other places. Things won't improve until people start addressing these issues in a modern, and realistic manner, instead of clinging desperately to ideas that haven't been true for 40 years.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Thursday, 11 May 2006 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

Canada's military has been neglected for decades now. They don't have the money, equipment or manpower
Canada actually spends a decent amount on it's military despite what you hear all the time. There is, however, a manpower shortage which does affect our peacekeeping capabilities. I also don't think our contribution in Afghanistan and our "efforts" in the sudan are anything to sneeze at (compared to other nations).

what does canada get that's so bad?
Look up the recent softwood lumber "deal" between canada and the u.s.
Long story short: the US can thumb it's nose at any rules or agreements it likes and Canada more or less has to deal with it.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 11 May 2006 05:58 (nineteen years ago)

"I also don't think our contribution in Afghanistan and our "efforts" in the sudan are anything to sneeze at."

I completely agree. Those soldiers are all serving voluntarily, and are taking a lot of fire in Afghanistan, because they believe that they can help those countries. That is extremely commendable. The government however, needs to provide them with the best tools and equipment to do their jobs. For example, flak jackets which actually stop bullets. The fact that we routinely risk soldiers' and sailors' lives by sending them up in decrepit 40 year old, accident prone helicopters, or second-hand diesel powered submarines with a propensity to catch fire, is a national disgrace, and an insult to those who serve. We get on our high horse and denounce the US for being "militaristic", but we've become so dependent on their security umbrella that we've allowed our own forces to stagnate with the resulting loss of global influence.

"the US can thumb it's nose at any rules or agreements it likes and Canada more or less has to deal with it"

OTM

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 11 May 2006 06:34 (nineteen years ago)

The Seakings aren't as bad as the news portrays them. There's been incidents, yes, but for the most part (as I am told by a friend in the military) they are still quite reliable. The US still uses the things too! As for the subs - I would cite those as examples of us actually spending money (on lemons - but spending cash nonetheless).

Interesing, w4lter -- I've heard a lot of Americans and Brits variously complain that Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans are bad houseguests. I had a kiwi living with me who eventually had 4 kiwi fux living on our couches ("for a couple days" == WEEKS) plus his girlfriend in his bedroom. All while paying nearly only one person's rent.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 10 December 2007 05:45 (seventeen years ago)

That sucks, Jon. on facebook I see all these people I went to school or uni with who are now living in London and I can just tell they're the exact kind of people who are causing this image.

Autumn Almanac, Monday, 10 December 2007 05:56 (seventeen years ago)

They were pretty ok houseguests otherwise -- but tended to monopolize the kitchen and would tell each other when they were done with the (single) shower so you could end up waiting an hour and a half for all of them to shower.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 10 December 2007 06:06 (seventeen years ago)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 10 December 2007 06:07 (seventeen years ago)

i'll have you know i'm an excellent houseguest!

the kiwi/aussie rivalry is funny - it's so onesided. kiwis have an inferiority complex, but i've never met an aussie i didn't like (apart from an ex-bf), and i got spoiled rotten by complete strangers while i was over there.

Best thing about New Zealanders is when the Wallabies are doing better than the All Blacks (not often), you can be all in their face about how crap the All Blacks are and how many World Cups won, etc. - but if the All Blacks are doing better than the Wallabies, you can be all like, "mate, I'm from Adelaide so I don't give a shit about rugby".

I've actually already written something along those lines!

OFFICIAL GUIDE TO THE LAWS OF 'THE GAME'
by Neil 'Andrew' Strauss

-Every time you go out, you go to the ball
-When you face the ball, you can make an attempt to score
-If you do so and miss, you are embarrassed in front of all the spectators
-You can of course leave the ball alone, and be comfortable with your non-scoring
-If you make a play at scoring, you can hit a 'single', which is normally done through use of the pull-stroke
-If you pull successfully more than once, your score is accumulated
-If the ball 'goes down' before reaching the boundary, four is automatically added to the total
-'Six' speaks for itself
-If the ball results in a bouncer, you can attempt to take it on, but beware of the consequences; without swiftness or dexterity you could well end up with a black eye
-Usually it is best to beat a hasty retreat in such circumstances
-A 'wide' is when you effect a pull as the result of external influences, such as a bookmaker, or a dare
-A 'no-ball' is when your pull does not occur within a legitimate ball
-A 'bye' is when you pull a member of the same side
-A 'leg-bye' is when you dress up as a member of the opposite side and then pull an unwitting opposition player, for a laugh
-There are only three methods of dismissal: partnership, retirement, and team-change
-There is no second innings (barring team-change or a broken partnership)
-Drinks breaks are traditionally taken with great regularity
-After the ball has finished, it is common for the batter to prod repeatedly at the cut strip
-Success is all a matter of decision, timing, and playing the right stroke, not to mention having a good line and holding a decent length
