what are they when they're at home? how about when they're out?

will you be bewaring them this year as perhaps instructed once or twice in your life by old women with crazy hair?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 February 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

in all the versions of Julius Caesar I've seen, the Soothsayer has been male.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 24 February 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

A Soothsayer told Caesar to 'Beware the Ides of March' (15 March). In the filmed version of the play we saw at school, the acotr who played Freddie Boswell in Bread was playying the soothsayer.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i really hope he had the same accent as he did in Bread - "Eh Caesar mate, beware dem Ides a March la!"

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i still need clarification on what an Ide is

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Different accent, I'm afraid, but the same comedy hair.

I think I could win prizes for my typos - I'm on *fire* this morning!

Lara (Lara), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope you didnt mean to say you were 'in firm' this morning

\Ides\, n. pl. [L. idus: cf. F. ides.] (Anc. Rom. Calendar) The fifteenth day of March, May, July, and October, and the thirteenth day of the other months.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

the filmed version of the play we saw at school

is that the one with Charles Gray as Caesar?

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know! The sets were made of drapes and old furniture and Brutus had a big nose. It's a while since I've seen it. I don't recall thinking that Gielgud would feel threatened by it but I was fourteen and I doubt I knew who Gielgud was.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a friendly stranger in a black sedan
Won't you hop inside my car.
I got pictures, got candy
I'm a loveable man
And I can take you to the nearest star.
I'm your vehicle baby
I'll take you anywhere you wanna go.
I'm your vehicle woman
But I'm not sure you know
that I love ya
I need ya
I want ya,
got to have you child,
Great God in heaven you know I love you.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

A wild haired man just stopped by my desk and said 'Beware Colin Meeder'.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

(Post was on topic, look it up.)

Colin Meeder (Mert), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

No. You scare me.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the first day of the ancient Roman month from which days were counted backward to the ides was known as the calends, from which calendar is derived.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Beware... or don't, it doesn't really matter to me.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

What I'd like to know then, is are there names for other days apart from Ides and Calends and if so what are they so I can make my diary sound more interesting? 'Oh yes, I'm going to London on the Bends of May. And it's my birthday on the Eeps of June.' That sort of thing?

Archel (Archel), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Every Monday is a Cack unless it is an Ide.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

there were the Nones!! either the ninth or the seventh

latin dates were v.bonkers

also they didn't have names for days of the week (i think)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The Idlewilds of March are what you should fear.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

BEWARE THE NOONES OF OF MARCH!!!

(The Nones is always eight days before the Ides, that is the fifth or seventh day of the month.)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't there going to be a FAP on the Ides of March?

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My Latin club's hopefully going to have an Ides of March party with a Caesar pinata. I'm excited.
