What did you actually do at the weekend, and how did it meet your expectations?

I went to three classical music concerts, met my one day old niece, and attended to some domestic chores. But I had way more domestic chores I wanted to do, plus I wanted to write letters to people and the like, so basically I feel (somewhat unfairly) that I've slacked off through the entire weekend.

How did your weekend outcome match with your weekend expectation?

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I was vaguely stood-up twice! But luckily I had ways of amusing myself anyway so I am not really angry about it! Hooray! On Saturday I wandered round Highgate, then came home with CWN, drank wine, watched Charmed and Dark Angel and then Spaced! I was very giggly. Then I SLUMPED, went to bed and cried and just as I was falling asleep got a phone call chiz chiz can't they ever call when I am awake...

On Sunday I sat round the house doing not much, expecting to go out later b-b-but that did not work out, so me and the Arsemonkey watched lots and lots of Jackass (too much) and got overexcited about ordering a super size pizza.

That is my life, tell me yours!

I expected to be more active on Sunday than I actually was.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Exceeded expectations as most weekends do as I don't expect much, me. At party on Friday night and did not kiss a man who is very interetsed in me but with whom I would only toy. Suprise Skank on Saturday night (well, a surprise to me as I'd forgotten). Very beautiful man there - HE MUST BE MINE. Two hour conversation with my sister yesterday catching up on things and *revealing* stuff. Very nice.

I deem the weekend a success.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

On Saturday I did some cleaning. And I watched Taken and From Dusk Til Dawn.

On Sunday I downloaded indiepop songs from the net. Some were quite good.

I have/had no expectations.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I spent Saturday with a good friend and that went as expected :) I then got kidnapped St nite to go to a very crazy party where an insane russian woman came over and made us all eat pyrogi and forced people to dance with her to the Smiths. It was all like some bad foreign film. Brilliant! And most unexpected.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

An insane russian woman came over and made us all eat pyrogi and forced people to dance with her to the Smiths.

Was she called Lara?

gareth (gareth), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Heheh. No I don't think so! Unless you live in Melbourne ;) She was great value - I just had no frickin idea what she was saying as she spoke no english. I live in a big Russian/Jewish neighbourhood... it is great fun :)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth: how odd. Walking home tonight, I was mentally composiong a shoegazer/Red House Painters cover of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and wondering if it'd work. Spooky. PS: Nalini is coming to see the flat tomorrow - yay you! :)

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 24 February 2003 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Lara (Lara), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Went away, played video games, came back to have dinner with family in Halfway House on Sunday, rewrote letter to friend (my handwriting is terrible, so everything gets a rewrite), went to Traffic. Alright, but clearly listening to Lara is the way to go next time.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Hung around the house mostly, quite poor - but much of this was by my own choice to have a hanging around the house day.

Didn't see any films in the cinema which is very very unusual for me. Am now hankering.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hanging around the house is far preferable to hanging outside the bus station with some cheap cider, a fate that befalls many here in Ormskirk.

I went to see Mr. Shirokuma in Manchester this weekend, it rocked. I now have a clutch of his songs to remix and tart up for his pending assault on the world of audio. All of this was slightly tempered by the fact that I spent 2 hrs on one of his tracks on Sunday, only for the file to just *disappear* from my computer. It's just vanished. Grr.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew - Hyland Youth Club in Greys on Friday night. It will cost you the shirt off your back. DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE THIS WEEKEND.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

friday - woke up, went to college to get a minidisc recorder from loans. bought a couple of cd's in town, worked in shop til half 9, went home, did vox pop editing thing for college on minidisc recorder. editing was straightforward, so that was good.

saturday, got up early, worked from 8 to 3. went home, then went out to the pub in bray with a few mates, the g/f and a couple of her mates. good night out, so that was ok.

sunday - went to work in the shop 8.30 to 2, went home and watched football, went out to the cinema with the g/f, saw "final destination" which was entertainingly bad. went home, slept.

good enough weekend, too much shop work and early rising though. i posted a fair bit on ilx throughout.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Fri: went to pub with Matt's workmates. Came home, ate pizza, watched TV.

Sat: food and furniture shopping, library, then WORK for 2 hours, then coffee and catch-up with friend S, then huge Mexican FEAST plus 2 bottles of wine at home with Matt and G while doing cryptic crosswords and trying to find records with phones in them for G's EFL class.

Sun: hungover lie-in, fried breakfast, attempt at writing, laundry, walk in the park and viewing of ultimate frisbee game, much crap TV, a quick [censored], made stir fry, watched more TV, went out for chocolate, bed.

It was fairly nice apart from the having to go to work bit.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

On Friday night I stayed in with my housemates, drank beer and watched TOTP for the first time in ages. It was most enjoyable but I was highly disappointed by Blazing Squad.

On Saturday I stayed in bed till 2pm, the went food shopping and to the pub, followed by an ill-advised night at a dismal indie club, made some new friends and ended up at a random house somewhere in the depths of SE London.

On Sunday I went home and went back to bed for most of the afternoon. Then some art student people came round and we ate dinner sitting at a table for the first time in months, drank wine, played Marvel Top Trumps and had a generally pleasant time. I then missed 24, much to my annoyance as it was the only thing I had actually planned to do all weekend.

It was a good'un.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Fri: out drinking with workmates. Visited 3 pubs on Oxford's Cowley Road

Sat: Emma & I went round to a friend's where we met up with some other friends of ours whose wedding we went to last October. They'd brought their wedding video (which was v. slick and included all the guests' names in the closing credits). Tried to work out who the vicar reminded us of. Realised it was Harold out of Neighbours. We also ate a Chinese takeaway, which was v. good value (there was lots of food left over).

Sun: slept mainly, because I felt very faint in Sainsburys and walked into a wall. This was very scary!

Fri and Sat lived up to expectations. Sunday was weird. I feel ok now tho.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Curses, I missed Blazin' Squad! And I was at home - I must have gone for a wee. Dammit.

Sarah (starry), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Blazin' Squad disappointed me because I was expecting So Solid Crew as done by the cast of Grange Hill and what I actually saw was a boring old boy band ballad with loads of members.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Busy!

Friday - family indian takeaway
Saturday - picked up daughter from sleepover, did 3 hours college work before lunch(!), went to supermarket, hired SDS high-impact drill to drill holes in patio (more later), kept an eye on Italy v Ireland on TV, friends C and J came over, watched Wales regain some dignity v England with shedloads of beer, had dinner, much wine etc
Sunday - rugby a.m. , pm drilled holes in patio and put up most of a pergola, evening a bit of e-bay admin and a couple of hours college work.
Only bad thing - not much music time.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

sat- read book, posted on ILX, sorted the computer, listened to recs.

Spent most of the weekend on a train trip to Philadelphia to see Mission of Burma, who were ASTONISHING; met up with Geeta, Maura, and a bunch of other New York friends there.

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i also listened to a lot of recs on my disc man throughout. autechre and yo la tengo were the soundtrack to the weekend.

My weekend low-ness has been redeemed by just buying Use Your Illusion 1 for £6.99 in Woolies.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 24 February 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

friday-went to a friend's twenty-first birthday party-was OK-saw friends I hadn't in a while.

saturday-went to see a flat [the fourth or so in a while]-was twenty minutes late-everything always seems to work out for the best, though-flat was perfect and we decided to take it-me and ally went back to my home village and drank beer and wine and watched telly.

sunday-got up late-meant to see the second the lord of the rings but, by the time we had had lunch, we were too late-walked around part of the eastend of glasgow looking at new buildings and old buildings and then the green and a train station that isn't used-went ten pin bowling at a crap alley-I won three times-went to the pub for food-went to another pub for a quiz-won the quiz-some guy talked to me about his perforated eardrums and about his job at the natural heritage/whatever and protecting birds and how I just want to develop places and how wind farms are terrible and nuclear power is the greenest and his son, james-he didn't annoy me as much as I thought he would have.

yeah, I had a fun weekend.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 24 February 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

friday: played cards
saturday nite: worked - it was an italian wedding, quite a tense one.
lots of boring frustrating exchanges

eg.
"excuse me this wine is very dry do you have something sweeter?"
"no i'm afraid that's the only white wine we have. would you prefer the red?"
"...my wine is too dry. i want it sweeter"
"i'm sorry but it's the only one we have"
"all the other function centres do it!"
"yeah, i'm really sorry but it's the only one we have"
"can you ask someone?"
"i'm pretty sure it's all we've got - can i get you something else instead, we have champagne, or orange juice"
"can you ask someone?"
(grr)"ok i'll ask someone for you" (go to the bar, chat with hannah about something else, when i get back customer has left table.)

haha enough fascinating anecdotes. after the wedding i got a lift home with a mate and we spent two hours (1am-3am) parked outside my house bitching about our bosses and coworkers! my neighbour got suspicious and came out and stared right in our window not realising it was me... it was pretty scary!

sunday: it was really humid. i went for a walk but was accumulating a thick layer of grime so i took a short cut back. was going to see some comedy improv with nellie but the heat had quickened everyone's temper - we had a fight so i stayed home. looked up a few msg boards and suddenly remembered @ 8:30pm that cornelius were playing at the metro so i hooked up with some buddies and did that instead and it was great!

minna (minna), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:08 (twenty-two years ago)

it was a pretty bad weekend with a nice lift at the end. today i made cd cover art for joel's mix cd. i put some beads in the spine which looks really good, i am very pleased with myself.

minna (minna), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I spent Friday night and all of Saturday with my relatives as I expected. Saw a horrible movie - Deep Blue or Dark Blue or something? - but followed that up with Spy Kids II which was fun.

Sunday was really great though. I finally bought the Bjork Royal Opera House DVD that I had ordered (see the 3 things you want picture thread) and it was even better than I had imagined. I also worked on my 13 things for the ILX swap. And I worked on a song for fun bjork-style in the guitar room with tracks of xylophone, drum machine, and beat boxing (through distortion which made it sound really cool). Finished off the day with a long walk around the neighborhood with my bf. Wasn't too cold out.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday night bought some records, then went to dinner with girl I dated a few months ago. It was all right, until she got to the part about wanting me back.

Slept all day Saturday, didn't get much accomplished. Went to a friend's birthday party at her apartment in Park Slope, had a good time, flirted, drank. I got her Woody Allen's Manhattan on DVD. We watched a little "Showtime at the Apollo" towards the end, then I took a long subway ride home. Bought a Sunday NY Times, then checked email, then went to sleep.

Got up kinda late on Sunday, spent most of the day reading the paper and listening to music. Then I made dinner. Then I went to go see NNCK and Jesus with Me at the Knitting Factory. Drank a few, then after the set took a couple tokes outside off a one-hitter. Then took a long subway ride home.

hstencil, Monday, 24 February 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

''It was all right, until she got to the part about wanting me back.''

and you said no? how did she take it? we want more!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I said I'd think about it. But I think I'm gonna have to say no.

hstencil, Monday, 24 February 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm. I had a nasty cold, so Friday evening was spent in with Friday evening TV.

Saturday morning I bummed around, filling myself up with Lemsip so I'd be able to survive the AFC Wimbledon Vs Withdean 2000 game in the afternoon. Attended the game with my friend Becky - possibly the first time we've ever seen each other alone - and sloped off miserably after we lost this potential promotion-decider 0-2. Becky and I went round our friend Joanna's house to hceer her up (she's just been dumped), only to be regaled with long descriptions of the sex she'd been having all morning with her (previous) ex. A delightful afternoon/evening spent lounging around eating curry and watching rugby, Stars in their Eyes and About a Boy, before I drove home and packed myself off to bed with another Lemsip and The Premiership.

Sunday was a quick lunch at my parents' house. I was in a foul temper, so I went off to play football in the park. This cheered me up no end, especially as I ended up round my mate Harry's house to watch the Liverpool match. Came home for dinner and to chat with my gf online, then went out to meet Harry at a local pub for a pub quiz. Although it was just the two of us, and we were SO bad that we almost didn't hand in our sheet, we ended up coming a frankly unbelieveable 5th and won 3 pints of beer.

A good weekend. B+

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I started drinking Friday at 6:30pm and didn't stop until 5am Saturday morning. I ate nothing that night.

Saturday I was so hungover I was paralysed.

Sunday I was still hungover but I decided to work through it. Bought a leg of lamb and roasted it while I watched bowling (the Tarheel classic) and the Nissan open on TV.

The leg of lamb exceeded my expectations.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My plans to make dinner for my friends didn't happen but otherwise it was fine.

Friday: Went to local bar to meet a friend. I saw some other friends there, so we had a laugh. I told them to come over for brownies sometime. Then I drank a lot and brought my gentleman caller to my house to watch Graham Norton. Dolly Parton was on, which was great as we'd been talking about her earlier.

Saturday: Yucky rain. We went to lunch and the supermarket. I took a nap.

Sunday: I went to the local church book sale, and bought a bunch of books. Then my landlords invited me for dinner so I visited with them. We watched Bob the Builder and Wallace and Gromit. Well, they have a two year old.

rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I did exactly what I said I would do -- help out friends in their garden on Saturday morning, nothing much else the rest of the weekend aside from burning mp3s, downloading same, watching movies, answering letters, etc. You crazy kids and your social life.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 February 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday night: crawled out of my lepsip induced haze and went to play a gig at the Metro. It was GRATE. OK, was kind of disappointed by quite a few of my friends not turning up for various reasons, so the turnout was kinda disappointing, but the gig was FANTASIC. Got Hilton drunk and dragged him home with me. Tee hee.

Saturday: Sticky morning after fun with Hilton. Meet my expectations? He surpassed my expectations. He went off to play a gig in Leicester and I went back to bed with more Lemsip to sleep until CTCL DJ thing. Which was GRATE. Everyone loved my bubblegum, someone actually came up to ask me what track I had just played (it was Hilton, funnily enough!), and I mistakenly played a TODD track without realising that TODD were actually there (they were not offended, though, in fact, totally chuffed). Oh, and kaitO were GRATE as well.

Sunday: Went grocery shopping and bought more Lemsip, to which I am now addicted. Had first Lollies rehearsal since last year. I was expecting it to be really awkward and yucky, since breaking up and reforming, but it was actually quite good. We were rusty, but we pulled ourselves together. Managed actually NOT to fight even though my bandmates didn't even pretend to be excited about me and Hilton (I think they are paranoid that I will leave our band for Hilton's, and I probably would have, would Hilton have had me).

So, erm, YES!!! Everything about this weekend was GRATE, everything met and usually surpassed my expectations. Gigs, orgasms, DJ-ing, rehearsals, everything. Hurrah! Best! Weekend! EVAH!!!

kate, Monday, 24 February 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

not necc. in this order: woke up late on saturday, started designing the condom packages i'm getting paid to design, didn't get very far, went to two birthday parties, stopped over at a friend's house and did my 'once every 4 months or so' pot smoking thing, was completely fascinated by a shiny sound in the roots's sacrifice and very moved by disco inferno's "fallen down the wire", woke up at 9am, had eggs and pancakes for breakfast, did nothing in particular, started a sketch of a bridge, fell asleep. B+.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Monday, 24 February 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Fri night: Went to a concert, a sort-of greatest hits of postwar American concert (4'33", Pendulum Music, In C, that LaMonte Young piece which is just a fifth & the one where you bang on a piano 997 times). It was marketed as an evening of minimal music but the only minimal thing about it was the amount of rehearsal time that went into it. Sigh. Why would anyone amplify 4'33"? Well, it was all done by a bunch of theater people. Bleh.

Sat night was a sound poetry festival that I helped organize and which I emceed. That went far better than expected. There was a point where people from around the world (US, France, Vietnam, the Netherlands, etc.) called into a few cell phones and performed their sound poetry, and that was insane. And the house was packed and the acts were sufficiently varied and my emceeing was bland but I didn't want it to be the all-about-me show. So it was great.

Decided not to go to some friend-of-a-friend's party where my groupie was going to be (and was hoping I'd come to); really, why should I go out of my way to meet the supershy groupies? That is ass-backwards. He can come to bowling tonight.

Sunday I rearranged my room -- with the iMac replaced by the iBook I realized I didn't need the huge computer desk anymore, so furniture was moved and my room was cleaned (partway). It was nice. Then I downloaded a bunch of ephemeral films. It was terrific.

Decided not to call up the straight guy I have a crush on and invite him to drinks, because I felt tired and homebodyish but really it seemed like too much effort (too frustrating!) and anyway he was just over a few nights before (my roommate -- the straight male one, who at one point I had a small crush on --agreed that he is a very hot slice of toast).

Chris P (Chris P), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I met up with 10 St Pauli fans at Liverpool Street. They immediately wanted beer, so as it was already 10.30, we went to a club which i shall not reveal the name of as it will incite derision.

A boozy time was had by all, and we (me and the 5 staying at mine) kept ourselves awake on the long night bus home by drinking vodka.

I felt like death warmed up as I had to be up on the Saturday at 10, and found the German guests tucking into a can of astra beer (4.9%) for breakfast. Gott in Himmel!

We then went to Kingsmeadow where I left them in Fat Boy's Cafe where they all had a fry up. We all then watched the game which had a cracking atmosphere but was k-rub performance (see Mark C's post). Did a collection for York City which raised 2200 pounds which was heartwarming.

We then went to the bar where we drank some more. The St Pauli fans periodically sang one of their songs which aurally, kept turning into 'Skol , skol, skol, skol, skol' but translated into 'We are from the North, we rape and pillage, we never wash, we are St Pauli'. We all then went to the 'I love my club' disco which was a bit like a wedding reception in style and feel, but we didn't let that affect our enjoyment.

The only problem came in terms of getting the Germans back to Germany, and after an hour of walking around Motspur Park we found a bus to get to Wimbledon. The Germans then decided they needed more booze and two ran off to find an off-licence. We tried to explain that at 1am, this was unlikely. The others missed a bus waiting for their comrades, but all was forgiven as they had somehow found a way of buying 10 cans of Fosters from a shop on The Broadway. We waved them off onto the night bus at 1.20am and was relieved to find out today they'd made it home.

The weekend was brilliant though, apart from the result of the game. For giving them floorspace in my house, they left me 4 scarves, 3 bottles of vodka, 400 fags and a super duper St Pauli t-shirt. They were lovely people and can't wait to go and meet them in 2 weeks. Magic!

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday night--Talked to friends on the phone, didn't meet up for dinner. Pissed off.

Sat.--Went to Amoeba where I bought the "Danger! High Voltage!" with the Jacques Le Cont mix, then realized it might not be the best song to play in a crowded nightclub this weekend. "Fire in the disco! Fire in the disco!" Picked up my friend Kristian at the airport and complained about mutual friends. Didn't see Russian Ark, it appears to have closed in LA. DJed at the gay bar, nobody danced till 11:30. Some guy gave me a $5 tip for playing something, that never happens. No hideous new age Course of Miracles queens complained about the "darkness" of the music this time.

Sun--Got up at 7:30 to be an extra in a tire commercial downtown. Just walked up and down a little street near MOCA for 8 hours. They're having a Lucian Freud show at MOCA and there are posters of the Leigh Bowery painting hanging from streetlights all over town. That's kind of nice. Came home and fell asleep. I'd only slept about 4 hours the night before. Woke up and watched the last hour and a half of the Grammies.

Arthur (Arthur), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Went to New Haven. Marvelled at what a shithole it is. Sang Stravinsky and ate yummy Thai and bland Irish food. Had my first Guinness in about ten months. Saw "The Hours" and was unimpressed. Came home and chatted with Anthong on AIM for a while, then watched the Grammies (and apparently was the only person besides my wife to catch the shot of Nelly's dancer completely falling on her ass in the background of his performance).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 February 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday: went to 'wine tasting' party - not really a wine tasting since there were omnipresent beer pong players. can i pleeeese go to a party with no beer pong or quarters being played? pleeeeeese?

Saturday: DJed at club for about twenty minutes. stupid band soundchecks eating into my time. got drunk. woman i was with saw ex-b/f hooking up with other woman, literally ran away. i got more drunk.

Sunday: went to local pancake house. mmm chocolate chip pancakes. went to record exchange and bought reissue of Elvis Costello's Spike. demos better than actual album.

Dave M. (rotten03), Monday, 24 February 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

omnipresent beer pong players

Dave, you must live the most frightening life imaginable. Do the beer pong players follow you to the bank and stuff?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 February 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Picked up Madeline, my girlfriend, from the airport on Thursday and spent the afternoon in bed. Went to the Hove beer festival in the evening , drank much excellent beer, and had a great curry afterwards.

Woke up on Friday with hangover and went to pub for lunch with Madeline before doing a little bit of shopping around Brighton, went home for Fish'n'Chips and TOTP, before meeting up with friends for a few drinks and then clubbing at 'Glitter and Twisted' at The Joint.

Spent Saturday afternoon listening to the Football on the radio, a very dispointing 2-2 draw with Grimsby which leaves us further adrift from the play off positions. Went to Sainsbury food shopping, and made Risotto. Watched 'Catch Me If You Can' on DVD and some episodes of 24.

Spent Sunday going to the garden centre and making a start on cleaning out the garden for herb planting, made homity pie for diner, and popped out for a couple of light ales at night, before rounding off the weekend watching more episodes of 24 (we're only half way through series 1 at the moment and are catching up.)

All in all quite productive, and pretty fun. Great to spend a weekend with Madeline again after 6 weeks of her away.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 24 February 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday Night - Started drinking as soon as I walked in the door at home at 3:30, popped in the ILX comp that arrived in the mail. Got piss drunk, sliced my hand open cooking dinner and bled everywhere. Sobered up fast and went to bed.

Saturday night - My sister and her new bf came over to visit, drank way too much and had to listen to sisters new bf tell me why Good Charlotte is the best band in the world. Told him to go to bed.

Was going to go out to see a friend DJ on Friday night, but ended up hitting the sack ridiculously early (~8:30pm) due to extreme lack of sleep the night before. Also needed to rest up for...

Mission of Burma in Philly on Saturday! After a long drive down from NYC that afternoon (incl. an ill-fated detour into Delaware thanks to my navigationally-challenged travel companion), arrived in time for dinner then show. Met up with Douglas, Maura, Geeta and other NYC peeps.

Sunday: Overslept, rushed to get back to NYC. Foiled by NJ turnpike closure due to fog, exacerbated by continued inability of travel companion to read a map, spot road signs, etc. Arrived home to find strange people wandering through my home (broker showing my apt. to prospective buyers). Rested for a bit then went out with friends for an impromptu birthday dinner for one of them in Little Italy.

Jen (nstop), Monday, 24 February 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Not so great, except for a long Saturday eveving with a few old friends, which was wonderful. Nothing either side, and Bristol Rovers only drew and are still 91st (we play Tim H's 92nd place Exeter this Saturday!), and I forgot to set the vid before going out on Saturday so missed all the C5 shows. Sunday I was pretty low most of the time - and I had a rotten night last night, to give me a bad start to the week.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 24 February 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

my very erratic sleeping patterns got straightened out a little. Friday I was up @ 1:30am and stayed up so I could go see Orrin Hatch speak at the Grammy Awards keynote luncheon and report on it for a website; left at 10am, got back at 3, filed at 5, went to sleep shortly thereafter. Up at 1:30am again and worked on a couple pieces; finished two, just got work done on two others. Went to Sarge's for a 5:30am lunch: hot corned beef sandwich, chicken soup w/matzoh ball, and, um, gefelte fish, which was an ordering mistake; I'd actually wanted pickled herring. I ate half of it anyway. went out for a bit, sold a big pile of CDs, bought a couple things (Madlib's Blunted in the Bomb Shelter, Kompakt Koln Prasentiert Michael Mayer, Prince's Sign 'O' the Times movie on VHS, Jean-Luc Godard: Interviews, a $4 copy of Greil Marcus's The Old, Weird America). Took copious notes on a microhouse roundup I'm writing but didn't do shit as far as actual sit-down-and-finish-it writing was concerned there. Got 2/3 of a feature I'm doing finished before I realized I need a secondary quote, which I'd somehow blanked; called and emailed a friend for a contact number and have yet to hear back two days later. Great.

Sunday I was up at 4:30am, wrote another piece, went out for much of the day, bought Motown: The Classic Years CD w/a gift certificate a friend gave me for my b-day (thanks A!), took notes on a book review (and more microhouse notes), came home and wrote the book review, watched the Grammys for the website, wrote it up, hung out on ILx till 2am, fell dead asleep. up today at 8:45 w/alarm. I'm normal again, hurrah! and no closer to finishing the two pieces due today. grrrr.

Oh, you got that message then, Mary? Um, I was drunk when it happened.

Friday I went to see [a local Latin band] at [a small, grimey, private club that is rented out for such things]. I had the most fun at the beginning of the evening when I ran into a couple of good dancers I had danced with previously (though neither of which I particularly know). A teacher I sometimes take classes with showed up and proceeded to do impossible things on the dance floor with his lovely date-of-the-night. (They didn't stay too long. I think he was mostly there to adverise his services.) I danced with some more people. As time went by, there were fewer and fewer people to dance with, partly because a lot of the people who remained were coupled. Very late in the evening, a group of vaguely punkish looking girls slowly made their way in, looking curious. I liked them immediately. They stood at the bar. One of them was moving around a bit, so I went over and asked her to dance. She wasn't familiar with the steps at all, so I gave her an impromptu less for the duration of one song, but then she wanted to get back to her friends. She was very nice about it, however. While dancing with her, I discovered that she and her friends had indeed simply wandered in, as I suspected. The band, which isn't a particularly big-time sort of affair, sounded pretty good to me.

Saturday I slept until about 10:30, but then I took a 2 1/2 hour nap later in the afternoon. I wasn't really good for anything much. Sunday I managed to get to the gym for the first time in weeks, worked out, and practiced some dancing. (I think I'm beginning to get fox trot.)

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday night I went to the gym, came home and ate a black bean burrito, then went to Best Buy to buy an ethernet cable. Came home and connected my DSL then surfed the web gleefully.

Saturday, woke up relatively late despite going to bed at 11pm. Drove downtown to meet old co-workers for lunch at Wolfgang Pucks. Shopped around by myself at the Virgin Megastore. Then spent another half hour at the Philosophy counter. Walked around downtown in the sunshine incredibly happy. Saturday night, my friend Kate picked me up and we ate spaghetti together. Then we record-shopped. Then we met up with her friends at this bar and I drank raspberry stoli & soda. A few hours later, we went to a club called Dance-a-tron where I proceeded to get really drunk and I danced and looked pretty dumb. After the club Kate and I and a bunch of people went to a diner and I hiccuped through two cups of coffee.

Sunday morning woke up slightly hungover but determined to GET STUFF DONE. Sprang out of bed at 11 and did dishes, laundry, cleaned the bathroom, the kitchen, vacuumed, took out the trash, then walked to the store and bought groceries. Came back and talked to JtN on the telephone. Started to snow after the phonecall, and I started to feel that late Sunday depression. Called my friend Jim and we had dinner together at a crappy diner then saw "Gangs of New York" together.

Pretty good weekend: A-
I think it met expectation.

Mandee, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday evening started with a luxurious soak in the tub and drinking a really nice Langeudoc. It proceeded to more wine and pizza delivery (mushrooms, red onion, chili peppers and green olive).
Saturday found out that the real wood coffee table I've been ogling for ages is in fact veneer so that was disappointment #1. #2 was not being able to find a suitable board game for two. All the cool ones were for 3+. Only looked in two places though so I'm not done yet.
Sunday was supposed to look at condos but an excess of snow prevented that. Waded through it to get beer though...
All in all, very enjoyable...

That Girl (thatgirl), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave, you must live the most frightening life imaginable. Do the beer pong players follow you to the bank and stuff?

Not to the bank, but they do occasionally show up in my classes. Ever heard of Newman's Day?

Dave M. (rotten03), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Headache on friday met my expectations (because I already suffered the day before). Saturday we went to Storm Und Drang) and it ... fuck it IT WAS AWESOME. The DJs before Storm were okay. The crowd was a bit bland and too many males. (But what do you expect from D'n'B?!?) Sunday I was a wreck. It's tuesday and I'm still a wreck. Maybe I should have taken something.

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 07:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Vegas was good... Rain was crowded and hot, but also good, and I think Studio 54 might have been as well had the two friends I went with not gotten into a screaming match and gotten thrown out - how do you get thrown out of a club in VEGAS for fuck's sake????? (Apparently screaming matches will do it). Waited in the lobby of the MGM Grand for said friends to finish the fight and got approached by a guy in bad cornrows who wanted to borrow a pen, sat down next to me (completely ignoring the fact that the girl he was trying to pick was standing right there) and asked me "how to win the key to my heart" and then met some guy named Trevor who was dressed in a jumpsuit and wanted to buy me cocktails. I declined, and not entirely because of said jumpsuit, but it didn't help any.

Otherwise, walked around a lot, drank a lot, if I never see prime rib again in my life (or until the next Vegas excursion) it will be ok with me, won $250 and ultimately am glad as hell to be home.

Spencer, you were right - half of LA was there.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Gah. Life in America is so *glamorous* - I'd forgotten about the planned trip to Vegas.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Goodness, don't I feel like an asshole?

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Why?

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess because *glamorous* smacked of sarcasm and I thought maybe I shouldn't have said anything after all? Maybe I'm just tired.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to spend my whole life being accused of being sarcastic when I don't intend to be and then watching people not getting the sarcasm when I'm ripping.

Your weekend sounds so alien to me that I'm impressed by it. Casinos, prime-rib and cornrows are not very common in Dublin y'see, any combination of the three would make for an 'unusual' weekend here.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

As one who gets the "you're such a sarcastic bitch" thing when I'm not being at all sarcastic, I'm sorry Lara. I really am just tired - being in the car with those two for 5 hours each way really wore me out. (Saying nothing of course about the drinking and staying up until 5 am - completely irrelevant)

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That's ok. Isn't it really late where you are? It still seems bizarre to me that we are all posting at differene times of the day from differenet zones.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 08:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Weekends in LV are glamorous no matter what, rock on Luna C!

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

It's 1 am - give me insomnia or give me...

well, sleep would be gorgeousss

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday, drank too much, went to off licence instead of pub and got more beer then went to my house and smoked some spliffs/finished the beer with my friends while listening to music. I fell asleep about 5 and they ate food from the freezer. It was funny when I got up and saw it gone, in a kind of annoying way. I'd have done the same though.

Saturday, got up about 4, felt very hungover and sick, decided to cancel my plans to go and see Lottie DJ, instead I got a nice takeaway, prawns with chilli and salt, my favourite, I had enough cash so it wasn't a really disgusting msg style chinese. Chatted to Gareth on AIM. This was the first Saturday I haven't been out at a club in god knows how long.

Sunday, went to supermarket to buy food for dinner, in the end cooked not very nice chicken wings and made mashed potato. Also bought some CDs, Behaviour by the Pet Shop Boys and some rock compilation cos I couldn't face wading through an album. Later on ate the leftovers of previous nights chinese, had a beer, chatted on AIM and then went to bed.

It was a dull enough weekend but my parents had been away so long (they got back yesterday) that I was tired of having people in and getting drunk and every night ending up going on till 5 in the morning.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 09:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday we all went to the pub - the usual suspects, it was good, we met Alex T's girlfriend (I'd met her before but they hadn't) - I was a bit embarrassed that they turned up just as we were finishing a particularly knotty dirty crossword but there you are. Had chicken on way home, foolishly.

Spent the next morning playing on the Playstation and realising I was fast getting a stinking cold. By the time I went to meet Isabel it was pretty much paralysing me and I sat in her car going 'arg'. We picked up her engagement ring from the jewellers but then cancelled the planned pub/curry cos I was feeling too rotten and went home instead. I rallied a bit, we went out for a curry which was nasty but we also decided to go to POLAND for our honeymoon yay.

Suunday morning I read the papers and Isabel slept in, then we headed to Oxfordshire to the Cotswold Wildlife Park so Isabel could see some capybaras - both still alive despite one being v.old. Also much gibbon and tapir action. Traffic jam on way back relieved by singing along to Human League songs. Home in time for 24. Still ill.

I'd have liked to go out with Isabel and friends but aside from that a good weekend, met expectations.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

POLAND!!!??

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes. It has ugly buildings and bison, so I hear.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

> Cotswold Wildlife Park

i think i must've gone to CWP for field trips every year for about 5 years at primary / junior school. that and west midlands safari park. and bibury trout farm.

and now that i'm here:

friday evening: 3.5 hours to get home, a personal worst.

saturday: the usual catch-up of the week's tv then into central london. bought more records than expected but they were all things i needed or bargains (barbed wire kisses on cd for 4 quid in hmv) so i can't complain. comics. home via supermarket. watched 4 episodes of buffy, csi, half the jackasses.

sunday: bath. rest of jackasses, dark angel (hate the new voiceover during titles and longer hair), 4 more episodes of buffy. tivo pleasingly empty now except for the totp2 with altered images, the totp2 with teardrop explodes, 'once more with feeling' and last week's grand designs (mini tate modern ex-water pumping station turned into residence: http://www.channel4.com/life/microsites/0-9/4homes/grand_designs/derbyshire.html ). put all of saturday's vinyl onto minidisc to listen to on train. packed for monday. watched 24 and wondered why i was bothering.

andy

koogs (koogs), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Andy, you're right about the new long hair in Dark Angel - it's **wack**. What do you think of All New Super Mobile Logan? I'm not sure if I can take any more shots of him "heroically" strapping up his legz0r.

I tried to watch 24 but was so tired went to bed after 15 mins. I made it to the part where Jack turns up with a HEAD IN BOX haha but that was it.

Should I start a Dark Angel thread I wonder...

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Friday: Did nowt. Fell asleep all evening.
Saturday: Woke up in time to not understand Popular again. Did washing. Started a blog. Watched something on TV. Missed Charmed + Dark Angel.
Sunday: Nowt. Forgot to go shopping before shops shut. Started tidying, actually got quite a long way. Watched ISKWYDLS (=v.rub but great) and missed 24, although last week's was the first one I've seen and was v.boring.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't even say why I like Dark Angel, but I'm going to see if it's out on DVD!!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a fantastic weekend. Apart from the 4.15am start on sat morning, but that was to get the 6.25 flight from stansted to Edinburgh, where I got picked up by one of my best friends, taken to her house, fed a cooked breakfast, and we then got the train into Edinburgh to meet another best friend to SHOP! We were looking for bridesmaid dresses for me and my friend Lily, so we pounded the streets of edinburgh, tried on gorgeous dresses, ate scallops and drank wine in the mussell inn (v.good) pounded the streets again, and decided which dress was best, and arranged for the right sizes to be put aside in the glasgow store, and went and had a girlie evening involving sparkly wine, steak, chocolates, and trashy women's mags. Sun involved bacon and egg sarnies, train over to Glasgow, more shopping and pounding of streets, eating and drinking, spending LOTS of money buying dresses, stoles, toiletries, etc. then the train back to edinburgh and chilling out. Then monday - early start, visit to the starbucks that over looks the castle for half an hour, then on to John Lewis to buy shoes to match dress, then on to the shopping outlet at Livingston, and more shopping, buying stuff from the first three shops I went in, lots and lots of bargains, girlie lunch at pizza express, move to another shopping centre, another pair of shoes, then the airport. Despite my best efforts I couldn't find anything I really wanted to buy at the shops in Edinburgh airport, so I just had to get on the plane and fly back to london, completely knackered.

I want to go shopping again now. Somebody cut my cards up quick!

Vicky (Vicky), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Vicky, you astound me! What! A! Woman!

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

A honeymoon in Poland. You're planning on taking Pete with you because of his feelings for the motherland? ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I ended up seeing some films, though not as many as I planned.

Chicago

Does what it says on the tin. A Stage Musical starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere. If this sounds like something you'd enjoy, knock yourself out. I though this was the first time I'd seen any of the stars, but of course I saw High Fidelity, which means this movie is Taking Sides: Rob Fleming-Gordon vs. Bridget Jones in disguise.

The Good Thief

A really good little heist movie. Well made, with sharp dialogue, a great end and fine acting throughout. If you're of a disposition to lament how Hollywood doesn't make great movies anymore, you'll find a lot of fuel for your argument here, from Nick Nolte shooting up at the start to the great twist at the end.

Adaptation

I was probably over-hyped on this. It's a bit more focussed than Being John Malkovich, though without real payoff. Whether that's intentional irony or not, I can't really decide. Nicholas Cage is incredible throughout. The monologue at the start pretty much describes my mental state at the moment, and there were bits of the film where I couldn't watch him. This is intended as a serious compliment. I'll probably have to watch it again.
