This is the thread where we talk really seriously about Sarah getting a fish for her desk

So, at this point I'm trying to decide between a beta and a goldfish. But maybe there are some other cute fish I don't know about that like to live alone or maybe with just one other fish in a small bowl?

And should I get one of those bowls with a plant growing out of the top or not?

Please tell me what to do. I am at your mercy. I don't have time to think any more.

Oh I thought you meant me. I don't know. I am jealous and bitter WRT fish as my fish were STOLEN from me at a young age when we moved house without even asking and my cousin got them (bitch).

In my brief research just now I read that goldfish aren't really supposed to be put in small fish bowls. Hmmm... So, I guess I should probably just get another betta.

Bonus points if you can find the name of the betta I had a few years ago on here.

Any reason not to buy the fish from PetSmart?

Sarah McLusky (coco), Monday, 24 February 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Get a beta.

Or maybe two males that you can keep at opposite ends of your desk. When you get bored you can put the two bowls next to each other and watch them FITE!!!

Here I am working so hard to strike up a conversation about fish instead of cats and to no avail. *sigh*

Cats cats kitty kitten cats meowy meowy meow.
I am losing my identity.

cprek,
This lady in my office has a beta at her desk = hours of endless fun when I'm the only one here.

get a beta and name it 'vhs'!

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a great idea. I have a friend in a band called "VHS and the babies" - I think that's the coolest band name ever.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That's suspiciously close to the band "VHS or Beta"

cprek (cprek), Monday, 24 February 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

get a puffer fish.

Ok, I am sure everyone is on the edge of their seats for more information on my potential fish purchase.
Well... I went to PetSmart during my lunch break today and they were OUT of bettas. NO!!! Also, they confirmed that I should not put a goldfish in a small bowl, that I should wait and get a betta. So, I guess it wasn't meant to happen today.

someday your fish will come...

Has anyone here made a fishbowl out of an old Macintosh (like a Classic or a SE)? I've always wanted to do that.

never done it, but it's a capital idea

one year passes...
REVIVE!

Is it cruel to have a fish that never gets sunlight? Also, is it bad to have him under a flourescent light? I need a little friend at my desk.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think fish will care much about the light. Actually, I can't imagine a fish getting upset about anything. In my experience, fish only have two moods: alive and dead.

Gold Teeth II (kenan), Thursday, 7 October 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, I just remembered a fatal flaw in this plan - when I go home on the weekend, the fish would die, right? And I can't bring him home, because then he would die in the mouth of one of my kitties.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

amateurist you ever make that computer fishbowl?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The fish should be okay over the weekend aslong as the light is on a timer and you leave those food blocks that release food slowly.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

They'll be fine without food for two days. Those slow release blocks tend to cloud the water up a lot, so you'd have to do very frequent water changes. http://www.bettatalk.com/food.htm seems to have sensible advice

We have two bettas on the mantal where they don't get direct sunlight and they seem happy and healthy after two years.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

(Oh, the mantle (I have no idea how to spell this) is far above the fireplace in case anyone was worried about them getting roasted)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 7 October 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Is it cruel to have a fish that never gets sunlight?

Cruelty toward fish consists of jabbing them with sharp objects, dangling them just above the surface of the water in order to watch them squirm, or introducing them to much larger fish. Lack of sunlight appears nowhere on the official list.
