COO: ILE v ILM

I believe ILE is a bit more interesting these days than ILM. What are your thoughts?

lucas, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 03:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Alpha and Omega. Yin and Yang. Oreo cookie and Oreo filling. Etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 03:39 (twenty-three years ago)

rock vs hard place. scylla vs charybdis. frying pan vs fire

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 03:40 (twenty-three years ago)

overeasy vs. sunnyside up. pastrami vs. smoked meat. garterbelts vs. bareassed.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 04:03 (twenty-three years ago)

six of one, half a dozen of t'other.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 04:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the idea of smoked meat.

Jesus in Drag, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Smooth vs. crunchy.

Assignment left to the reader.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 05:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I think ILM is more interesting. But it's not the one I spend more time reading.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 05:19 (twenty-three years ago)

the c/d ratio has been very low on ilm lately, but when it's good (explain luomo, post-pazz-jop stuff, christgau) it's really good. the posters who think and write well seem to do it about music best.

dan (dan), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 05:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm more into ILE these days, but mainly because I now know a few people in person, understand regular poster personalities a bit better (and others know a bit more about me). On ILM, "it's all about the music, man" which is more specific about a subject and less about the personalities of the posters themselves.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 06:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I prefer ILE. there's only so much that can be said about music, but anything can be said about everything.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:11 (twenty-three years ago)

i still cant tell the difference between the 2

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Props to AAD, IHE, ILC and IHAAD too!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't like ilm very much, there's seems to be too much aggression, too much wilful obscurantism, and too many big words for no good reason. i mean, i'm a musician, but i go on ilm and i have no idea what they're talking about half the time.

i like ile, it's (generally) got a more funny and laid back vibe.

jeanne picot (jeanne picot), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 13:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Harder question for some? Choose only one: ILX or IRL

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 13:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Ireland for sure.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmm... Must remember to add to list on "Threads you tend to avoid."

But, uh, yes. I prefer ILE but I rarely hang out at ILM so it could be really fucking great and I'm totally missing out. I'm overwhelmed with just one board as it is.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

my main prob with ilm is it's work not play

for me it is littered with "things i need to think through properly"

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Thinking: classic or dud? :)

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

classic but i have to rest sometimes jel

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

ILM by a long way.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

(I think it's time for the Nipper to post his Collini / Hitchens link again)

the pinefox, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:40 (twenty-three years ago)

When I start a thread on ILM I am more excited about the responses I might get.

When I start a thread on ILE I am more amused by the responses I *do* get.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:41 (twenty-three years ago)

ILE, for its variety. And too much of ILM is about stuff in which I have little interest.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 19:12 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, all that music shit.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

N when are you coming to America? You speak our gutter patois fluently.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

my main prob with ilm is it's work not play
for me it is littered with "things i need to think through properly"

I second that!

Also: I came for ILM, but I stayed for ILE.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Coming for ILM c/d.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

eleven months pass...
I have just realised that every time I post to ILM I get sucked into a big vortex of self-hatred and self-doubt and end up feeling young, stupid and crushable. My mouse will not be wavering to that side of the screen for some time.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

dastoor you cheeky bastard.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm always like: where do they find the time to hear all these records? I thought myself relatively well up on things till I discovered ILM.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I like a wide range of music, some quite obscure (shock horror!) but I wont post to ILM because it always makes me feel stupid. So why do I post to ILE again?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

It just always seems to devolve into this: "I have a bigger dick than you"-mud slinging. Then I hate myself for caring about boys and their pissing contests.

I feel like Jess-lite today.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

But surely that is ILE to a lesser extent Anna. (although the girls boast about the size of their boobs too!)

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

to make everyone else feel a little less charming and nice

x-post

hmmmm, Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess is a complete pisser!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

pp - they do?

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

this is why you keep coming back pink!

http://www.pegasus-shoes.co.jp/shoes/adidas/img/t0207_04pink.jpg

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM doesn't really make me feel stupid... I mean, maybe a bit ill-informed or out of touch. But the more you read/post, the more you realise who has similar taste in music to you, and who to pay attention to. I get more excited because people have heard of stuff that I haven't that I would really *like*. (I need to get some of those newer spacerock/dronerock reccomendations - saw some of them in Other Music the other day.) I mean, en masse, it's intimidating, but it's the sheer mass. No one has listened to EVERY SINGLE RECORD on ILM, but if each person has listened to, say, 50 records, soon you have the appearance of thousands of records. (That probably doesn't make any sense.)

HOWEVER, I will say this. I don't know how it is right now, but over the past few months, the preponderance of really stupid C*l*mification sexism in the general ILM populace has REALLY been bothering me. I don't know if it's an actual increase, or if I'm more sensitised to it, but you know, threads like "Busty Women Of Rock" make it a really intimidating and uncomfortable place to be.

the river fleet, Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yuck! They look like they're made of tablemats from a pound shop.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

GLASS: All right, whatever. Listen up now. This is a big speech Samwise is about to make, a reveille for Goonies everywhere. I used to watch this when I worked in the video store and it kept me going during my darkest days.

BLAIR: Wait. Is this the speech—the "down here, up there" speech?

GLASS: I prefer to call it "The Wishing Well Address."

BLAIR: Listen to that Hobbit, man: "The next time you see sky, it could be over another town. The next time to take a test, it'll be in some other school. Our parents, they want the bestest stuff for us. But right now they got to do what's right for them, 'cause it's their time—their time, up there. Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here. That's all over the second we ride up Troy's bucket."

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

But th 'Busty Women of Rock' thread is a classic victory over laddism, cause it's full of feminist debate!

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Dunno which is better, ILM can be friendly and fun, generally on a more regular basis to ILE, cos ILE feels bigger, in a way.

What I mean by that is if there's a thread about a particular music subject I know the likes of Matos or Jess or Tim F or Vahid or Stevem will probably be on it. It's interesting and sort of revelatory that I feel more comfortable knowing people through the prism of what music I like than simply just knowing them.

Yeesh, no wonder REAL LIFE is so daunting.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ILE is pretty good as well at the moment though - there's quite a nice spread of stuff being talked about. Both boards are considerably better than they have been in the recent past (five or six months ago in ILM's case, one or two for ILE).

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I've just scanned what I could of some stir-tastic thread called 'Why do music writers bother?' on ILM and I can well see what Anna means: there's just so much bile out there; some posters seem to need validation by being as unreasonable as possible. It is worse than ILE, possibly cos there's less [searches for word, fails] professional... jealousy here.

Enrique (Enrique), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure, I've been off both except in the evenings until this week, cos I was working, but ILE seems difficult to get into really. Are there actually way more posts on ILE or is it my imagination?

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(there is so much friendliness on ILM, it's just not on the big row fights obviously!)

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly Enrique.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

But in addition there are things like the dancehall rhythms thread where's there's just this mad sense of mutual excitement and enthusiasm going on with no dickwaving at all, I enjoy reading it even though I know bugger all about anything that's being discussed. I reckon ILM works best when you have these little communities within the wider board and everyone's just throwing around recommendations and opinions - the grime thread is another good example.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I reckon ILM works best when you have these little communities within the wider board

Entirely otm. I still look back fondly to autumn 02, there were so many good records, and threads with michael wells, steve, siegbran. *sniffle*

Mind you I also think a decent but reasonable argument on ILM is great, that Daft Punk/Pitchfork review thread last week was pretty amusing, it was only a little bit heated. As I say chatting to people through what music you like is really good fun and does get that enthusiasm vibe.

Remember the Kish Kash thread when it was first posted!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 5 February 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

bitch better gimme some Tang first

Some artificially-flavored fruit juice, too.

Prude (Prude), Sunday, 8 February 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd like to say that this thread sucks monstrous elephant vagina.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm w/ mr. daddino upthread. though i don't believe that the "apology" was all that sincere, esp. since ethan trife has a LONG history of this sorta punk-ass thing.

frankly, i'm really getting sick of the double-standards and the attendant hypocrisies around here -- apparently, trife can't do or say ANYTHING wrong in some ILXors' eyes, when the same conduct by another ILXor would have red flags flying everywhere. but since he's barely outta high school, that may be his excuse for his high-school conduct -- what's the excuse for the folks who've been outta high school for a good while now?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i also love this new wrinkle -- that you can't criticize anyone unless you say it to their face, even when doing so means that you'd have to fly half-way across the continent (or the world) to do so. L-A-M-E.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

FOR FUCK'S SAKE WHY DON"T ALL OF YOU LET IT GO?????

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 8 February 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

20 Professors Row? That sounds like a name from some screwball thirties comedy where Cary Grant is a visiting English scholar who gets involved in wacky hijinx with Katherine Hepburn at the big homecoming game!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

those professors better bring extra elbow patches for their jackets, they are gonna need them. plus, all those Tufts kids are backpackers.(no, really, they are. they all wear huge backpacks. they can barely stand up. all you have to do is push them over.)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The laws of gravity, our friends.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 8 February 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny thing is ethan's actually gone way down on my totem pole of "ILXers I'm pissed at" and is pretty much off the "ILXers I don't trust as far as musical taste goes" list; it's just that I'm a grudge-holding asshole. Maybe it's just a personality clash or something, like he's got good points but I can't get past the abrasiveness or something. I tried just ducking out of ILM so I could get some cooling-off time and learn how not to be overly pissed off at people but that sort of backfired. I took back the stupid shit I said in the stupid-ass Pitchfork letter and I've long since switched off auto-jiggy-hater mode (last two albums listened to: Get Crunk and Back in the USA) and feel like a better person for being into the nerd rap and the bling rap equally.

Anyhow, I want to just drop this beef with trife, mostly for social politeness reasons but also in an attempt to divert him from my old stupid shit I used to say and towards the current stupid shit Alex in NYC says. Didja read his post where he said he wanted to shoot Jay-Z with a nailgun? That's fucked up.*

*Actually I'm mostly joking about pitting trife against Alex in some sort of ILM Kumite Jean-Claude Van Damme style, though that'd be fun to watch.

[Also David Banner > Kool Keith in my book for the last few months (and any random MC > current Kool Keith since I heard Matthew)]

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 9 February 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 9 February 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

you know i don't think i ever once squared w. trife wrt his tastes (um cs we're so far apart i guess) bt almost always thk he's right re: these kinda attitudinal things. which is important.

shoot me.

eleven months pass...
I just pulled this threa dup to say that at the moment I don't understand what anyone's going on about about 99% of the time in ILM.

I read the thread though, and note:

1/

i like Le Coq, i think hes good

-- Stringent Stepper (stringent@), February 6th, 2004.

he reminds me of Ramosi

-- the surface noise (electricsound@), February 6th, 2004.

Wow. Top marks, surface noise.

2/I was snotty about d*d**s*us. I was wrong, he used to driive me up the bloody wall, but now I like the stuff he posts.

That's it, really.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's currently got a pretty good blend going, both boards. There's been some really sharp discussion on a few ILM threads of late.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"too much wilful obscurantism, and too many big words"
Hehe.

During the pre-festive ilx downtime I (re)discovered that I Love Music more than I Love Everything (else). I still post to and read more of ILE, mainly because many ILM threads are so specific in their nature that they don't concern me, but if I was presented with a Sophie's Choice scenario I would shed a single tear and say "Take ILE, go on, take it!"

That said, there is now an ILE thread about me so my newfound ego may struggle to let go.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Both are pretty good at the moment.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 26 January 2005 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

ILM: For most of my life, I am the only one who has any great breadth of musical knowledge and/or appreciation. So I don;t get to talk about it much.

ILE is more like my life is.

I don't have to choose one as I thought COO was let's all act like Doves on this thread.
