me, technically. there was some kind of mixup, and I didn't have enough classes to graduate, so I left and got my GED the same month.

Technically, me. I attempted the 11th Grade twice, dropped out the first time due to mental illness, was forced to go back and repeat 11th grade cause I wasn't 16 yet, then got Mono, spent 3 months in bed and just gave up. Though I did go and get a GED as soon as I was old enough and swanned into art school at the age of 17.

Me. People who graduate are total chumps--the GED test takes like 90 minutes (though they give you _eight hours_) and bam you're done with high school. Though of course it's taken me this long (4 years) to actually get off my ass and go to college but that's another thread.

Dave Thomas I believe was a high school dropout, and he saved the world from a tragic square hamburger shortage.

You are kidding, right? There are only FOUR high school drop-outs on this entire board? Come on, don't give us high school drop-outs a bad name! I mean, even an IDIOT can get on AOL...

so did homer simpson

I only have a high school diploma because I threatened to drop out, so they gave me one. (This is the school that gave a student class credit for the community service she had to do because of truancy charges -- they were desperate to graduate everyone.)

So I'm not a dropout, but I coulda been, darn it.

Mike North, a sports-talk show broadcaster here in Chicago, dropped out of high school. He started a hot dog stand to make a living. On the side he bought time in a studio and produced tapes of himself. Eventually a radio station in town gave him a shot. A couple months ago he was rewarded with a new $1.5 million / year contract.

ME! REPRESENT! I dropped out of high school at age 15 and now I am a junior at Columbia. It is the best path to everything!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

as an educator I must speak up and say that graduating from HS is the best way to go. ahem.

That Girl (thatgirl), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Me - I dropped out at 15 and started at a Junior/Community College - eventually took the "CHSPE" and passed with 100, and it allows me to claim that I have a HS. Degree instead of a GED - but then the colleges want my HS records and there aren't any...sheesh.

California High School Proficency Exam - actually counts as a diploma rather than a GED - basically like taking all off the finals for all of your high school classes at the same time. It was uggy.

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Thursday, 27 February 2003 08:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if there is any equivalent in Illinois.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Thursday, 27 February 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't the GED country-wide, or is that only NY State? Graduate Equivalent Diploma or something like that.

Dropping out of high school and doing nothing else = DUD.

Dropping out of high school, taking a test in place of graduating and going on to college in some form = CLASSIC!!!

I really thought the GED was some kind of life-saver when I found out about it. The idea of spending 2 more years in high school was so awful I kept trying to slash my wrists. It was a pretty hardcore test, I think it was two or three days in a row of 4-hour exams, it was really comprehensive. But I scored 90%, which was like graduating with honours or something.

If I had kids, I'd insist they dropped out of high school and get a GED. Fuck, I'd probably homeschool them.
