Massive attack - butterfly Caught

verse:
Weightless cool honeysuckle
Fair skin freckles
Uncut teeth
Tranquill eyes
Bite my lips
Shhh
Bite my lips
Under your feet

Who the fuck are they blaming here? This song screems of racial hatered toward one single group of people. FUCK YOU

hjkh, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe they just don't like Uncut writers. don't know why - i mean we gave them four stars.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

This song screems of racial hatered toward one single group of people. FUCK YOU

stupidest comment on the board this morning - alas there's no prize for you. those lyrics could mean anything - self-deprocation even, do you even know who Massive Attack ARE incidentally?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Do they mean anything?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

What if it was:

Waiter school money cycle
Efascing fate calls
Handkerchief
Tranquilise
Skyline flips
Shhh
Skyline flips
Under your feet

?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

this is how i heard it:

weightless force honeysuckle
strangers, strange things
lights from pages
?
tainted by the naked eye
?

?
?
darker than skin(?)
?
radiate, open lips
keep smiling for me
?
radiate, open lips
keep smiling for me

weightless cool honeysuckle
fair skin freckles
uncut teeth
tranquilise, shhhh
open lips, shhhh
under your feet

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:35 (twenty-two years ago)

it doesnt sound like 'open lips' in the last verse but it did in the second verse

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

??????????????????????

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me, or have I missed something in this thread?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

no, it's not just you. hence my ????????????????????

context please? (maybe it would help if i'd heard the new massive attack album?)

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Dammit, I thought the thread title was 'Massive Attack HATERS'!!! Instead, I find a weird attempt to make them seem interesting, what a disappointment

dave q, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

thats the least interesting post on this thread ;)

i think the aim of this thread is to try and decipher what 3D is babbling on about on the track 'Butterfly Caught' from the no. 1 smash hit album '100th Window' by popular beat combo Massive Attack. the original post seemed to suggest that there were racist overtones in the lyrics but given the nature of Massive Attack and their music this is extremely unlikely. There is currently no decent alternative explanation however...does the album include lyrics printed on the inlay?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Does it matter? It's dull dull dull.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

the confusion arises in the leap from the lyrics printed in the first post to the accusation:

"Who the fuck are they blaming here? This song screems of racial hatered toward one single group of people. FUCK YOU"

Weightless cool honeysuckle? You racist swine!

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey! It's a white guy using these lyrics as an excuse to launch racist abuse at a (multi-ethnic) pop group!

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this our generation's "How Do You Sleep?"

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"Well they certainly send ME to sleep! hahahahahahahaha, Massive Attack are so boring, hahahahahaha"

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey! It's a white guy using these lyrics as an excuse to launch racist abuse at a (multi-ethnic) pop group!

Notice how there are fewer and fewer black people in Massive Attack with every single release? Eh? EH???

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, they obviously killed and ate Tricky, Matt.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

hooray! I'm glad I've discovered frothing mentalism on my first visit here. saves me a job like

"special cases" isn't quite as good as "nothing compares 2U" now is it?

j0e, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hello.

Real frothy mentalism

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

There's absolutely bugger all meat on Tricky in any case. Explains why 3D has been looking so malnourished lately, the poor lamb.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

j0e you poor fool, welcome :D

i've had enough trouble trying to suss out the lyrics to 'Special Cases' - is it me or does Sinead impersonate a council estate single mother by going 'Don't tell a man what he dont do right, na tell him all the fings that make you cry - now check yourself for your own shit and dont be makin out that its all him'??

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

hang on a minute, you can't hate black people and want to eat them at the same time....can you?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

wotcha

maybe they could remedy the Massive Attack scrawny factor by having julie burchill as guest vocalist on the next LP. I'm sure her helium voice would brighten up the whole affair

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

My head hurts. More than usual.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

And, conveniently, would also stop her writing.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

nah not really. you'd just get lots of songs about how she hates tony parsons and didn't see a foreign country until she was 32

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

j0e is turning this into Best Thread Evah ;)

these dubious lyrics (even tho there's hardly a racist connotation they still read like nonsense) aside i think i prefer 'Butterfly Caught' to the very similar 'Mezzanine' track itself

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

nah not really. you'd just get lots of songs about how she hates tony parsons and didn't see a foreign country until she was 32

Oh right. The idea originally appealed to me because I thought you were suggesting that the Massive Attack boys actually eat her. Shame.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

its settled then, 3D to work with Cannibal Ox on non-music related 'project'

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh I dunno - I think Julie would taste too bitter. and be full of gristle.

rather like "100th Window" in fact

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

shhh, dont say that around here, they'll have your guts for garters

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, very good album. Nyah to those who disagree. I AM RIGHT! *pouts at the center of the Nediverse*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I think its ace, but then I have already said so at length on ILM. Butterfly Caught is very probably my least favourite, though.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm not keen on 'A Prayer For England' at all...and I really can't see myself listening to it much but i do like 'Special Cases' and 'What Your Soul Sings' especially

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

oh I wasn't being particularly serious. I like it, and it has brilliant moments, but as with mezzanine there are a few tracks with about as much character as mashed weetabix

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

remember the Weetabix characters? one was called Brains...who were the others?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there was one called Dunk. And another called Token Female Weetabix Character. I remember all the boy ones had hobbies such as breakdancing or sport and the girl weetabix's special interests stretched to hair ribbons and having eyelashes

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Bixie. and Brian. This is tragic. I had a Weetabix vs The Titchies computer game.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

bah, tom. (bixie was the girl.)

Alan (Alan), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot grasp what the racist connotations are supposed to be at all. Can someone explain?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i can't actually

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Martin, I was about to say the same thing - those lyrics just sound like some Cocteau Twins outtake. WHAT AM I MISSING?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

ten months pass...
http://lemon64.ayleen.nl/covers/full/weetabix_versus_the_titchies.jpg

I had to look this up to check that I wasn't going mad and they did indeed have skinhead cereal when I was little.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 11 January 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Best thread ever

sym (shmuel), Sunday, 11 January 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
skinhead cereal?

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 03:55 (nineteen years ago)

Romper Stomper Crunch

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

I still don't get this. Maybe I'm too literal.

Super Cub (Debito), Tuesday, 10 October 2006 04:45 (nineteen years ago)
