"This is the G-Funk Era" --a kid, approximately 12 years old, overheard commenting in a pedantic tone of voice to another kid somewhat younger than himself, at an El station in the Loop in Chicago, ca. October 1995

Question: when did the G-funk era begin, has it ended yet, and if so what era are we presently in?

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

naturally I am hoping it's the "John takes over the world and redistributes all the wealth among the most clever ilX0r posters" era but we can't always get what we want, can we

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

G-Funk vs. bling-bling. Dre then, Dre now? Etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the dawning of the Age of G-Funk. Don't wait a moment too soon. Used to be different, now it's the same. Yawn as your plane goes down in flames.

Good night to the G-Funk era. 'Cause we don't need you any more...

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

does this mean we have finally progressed to the H-funk era? Thank God for that, then

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

We're in the Freak-Funk era.

I like the sound of this H-funk era of which you speak, J0hn.

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

so if g is gangsta, h is... horse?

minna (minna), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

So how many years until we're back to P-Funk?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Blow the roof off the mutha-sucka!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

G-Funk=Warren G apparently
see?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

H is for H-O-V-A, duh.

Amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

OOH! ooh!
"Standing respectidly for Gangsta Funk, G-Funk is the laid-back, Parliament/Funkadelic-inspired variation of gangsta rap developed by artists/producers like Warren G, Dr. Dre, Above The Law, The D.O.C. and more in the early '90s. Distinguished by its synthesizers, slow grooves, deep bass, rolling P-Funk beats, sweet female backing vocals and lush funk guitar, G-Funk became the most popular genre of hip-hop in the early '90s. After the commercial success of Dr. Dre's release "The Chronic" back in 1992, many new rap and RnB artists and producers followed these musical techniques, making it the most recognizable sound in rap for most of the early to mid '90s."

I am so fuckin' smart.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

That's right, I'm swearing a lot today. I'm gangsta.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Enjoy it while it lasts, mr stencil! only a few more indeterminate periods of time and we shall reach the J-funk era, at which point either I get all the toys or we all start listening to Acid Mothers Temple

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Acid Mothers Temple. Out with the I-funk! In with the J!

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I only kinda like Acid Mothers. Can we substitute for other psych rock bands when it's your era, J0hn?

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I think all funk is J-Funk, if you get my drift. You know like a "J", as in smokey-smokey? No? You know, "J" as in let's roll one? No? Fine. People got high and made funky music...there, I said it.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Let the J-Funk era come to pass and we can all collect AMT and Ghost super obscure Egyptian Fan Club only eps.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Everything these days is all EXTREME, with an X...eXpresso (although that's a misspelling that kinda pisses me off, whatevah), X Games, generation X...I say, THIS IS THE ERA OF THE X-FUNK!!

(I'm a little sad nobody caught my They Might Be Giants' reference above.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It started in 1969 with On Time. The first phase peaked when they sold out Shea Stadium quicker than the Beatles. The second phase began when they added Craig Frost on keyboards and then got Todd Rundgren to produce them. I think it ended around the time Mark Farner found God. Or maybe when he cut his hair. I don't know what era we're in now, I don't keep up.

Arthur (Arthur), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

They Might Be Giants will never be funk, obv.

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

They Might Be Giants will never be Grand Funk, either.

hstencil, Tuesday, 25 February 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

and thank god for that

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 25 February 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)
