20 years after the poll tax riots we have... the American Apparel riot.
― mmmm, Friday, 2 April 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these rummage sales that all men may one day own a £12 hoodie."

One day? Just go to TK Maxx...

what gets me angry is not the mental that is jumping over the car, it's the crowd who are too eager to whoop and cheer while filming the thing on their iphones so that they can put on their blogs..
― mmmm, Friday, 2 April 2010 20:13 (fifteen years ago)
this all must mean something which can be summarised in a sardonic messageboard post.

Cheap clothes for chavs , broken britain , fighting over clothes ?Sad sad day .
― salsa sharkshavin (salsa shark), Saturday, 3 April 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)
Don't think they were actually fighting over clothes were they though? From what I've read they were objecting to being arbitrarily stopped and searched.

Wasn't sure which thread to post it to, it sounds like a treat thoughhttp://www.breakmyfall.co.uk/
Liza (Kat Redstone) hovers precariously between change and self-destruction, between leaving her failing relationship with girlfriend Sally and finding success with their band, Blanket. Sally (Sophie Anderson) works nights in a dead end job, clings to her fantasies of a better life and ignores the chaos around her. Vin (Kai Brandon Ly) works as a rent boy, is secretly in love with Sally and in denial about everything else. Jamie (Collin Clay Chace) works nights in a gay cabaret bar, but longs to break free of his friends and their drug-infested dramas and settle down with a nice man. In the three days leading up to Liza’s 25th birthday things finally come to a head between Liza and Sally. After a failed birthday dinner, the four friends are plunged into emotional meltdown at an illegal rave and by the end of the night there’s no going back to how things were.

Blanket!
― post, Friday, 8 July 2011 08:47 (thirteen years ago)
that was what really made it extra special. Also what happened at the "failed birthday dinner"? I'm guessing some wrangling over splitting up the bill.
― Neil S, Friday, 8 July 2011 08:55 (thirteen years ago)
i feel like that blurb was invented to make people on messageboards (not this one) post "fucking ironic twats."
"no doubt full of stupid haircuts"
etc
eg comment is free

I rose to the bait, but it does read like something that Nathan Barley might have pitched, or Attachments/ Metrosexuals miniseries c. 2000.
― Neil S, Friday, 8 July 2011 09:07 (thirteen years ago)
oh yeah i agree it sounds terrible.

omg i think that is kat redstone who was a few years above me in school-- when i was a teenager i thought she was the coolest person in the entire world. (i kind of still do) (i really want to see this film but am concerned that i might FAINT)
― do the hypnic jerk (c sharp major), Friday, 8 July 2011 12:19 (thirteen years ago)
from looking at the FB page for the film they seem to be mainly farming it out to queer cinema fests and the like? Obv that and "effing hipsters" aren't mutually exclusive demographics but it suggests it maybe comes from a place that isn't entirely... privileged edginess or some strawman like that
also they put Wetdog on the soundtrack, Wetdog are band good
― winsome posters leave the hall (DJ Mencap), Friday, 8 July 2011 12:38 (thirteen years ago)
^ this is true, Wetdog unexpectedly good support band to someone or other last year

Whereabouts?
― When a German communicates, you listen (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 16:57 (thirteen years ago)
Commercial Street.
As the official site says:
Furnished throughout with personal finds the space will act as both a social hub and fashion destination in the heart of the local community.
― James Mitchell, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 17:21 (thirteen years ago)
I can deal with Topman Premium or whatever but can Brick Lane just disappear please.
― mmmm, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 17:33 (thirteen years ago)
Knew it'd be commercial St. Agreed mmm, btw, brick lane is a fucking dump. Walked by Rough trade (and surrounding shit) one sat night about six months back and it was the roughest atmosphere i've ever seen in London, fights starting all around etc.
― When a German communicates, you listen (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 23:18 (thirteen years ago)
I like the mod shop on brick lane. the south end of brick lane is great for lunch during the day. but yeah the whole vibe bar / truman brewery nexus should get lost and not come back
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 28 September 2011 23:21 (thirteen years ago)
A friend of mine lives right in there

I rarely head down that corner of London at the weekends anymore. When I first moved down here, I used to live about 10 mins walk from RTE, and would go there at about 9pm after afterwork drinks and do some drunk CD shopping.
However, the last two times I've had the misfortune to go there at the weekends, it just felt like being out in Soho. I guess being near a major train station was probably a part of its downfall in the end.
― Moon Fuxx (Jill), Thursday, 29 September 2011 00:02 (thirteen years ago)
being so close to the City doesn't help either - lots of lesser functionaries in suits doing shots. i'm never going to understand why people over the age of 20 do shots.
― civilisation and its discotheques (c sharp major), Thursday, 29 September 2011 10:49 (thirteen years ago)
Sometimes you just get caught up in things, people end up just getting them for you.
It's weird because Shoreditch is now really accessible for me on a weekend but I rarely want to go into any of the bars there. I've started to feel nostalgic for the good old days of Soho drinking.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 29 September 2011 10:54 (thirteen years ago)
some people just enjoy getting violently ill
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 29 September 2011 10:55 (thirteen years ago)
shots are definitely things that inexplicably happen to you rather than things you actively get
― lex pretend, Thursday, 29 September 2011 10:57 (thirteen years ago)
they always seem to be sambuca
― lex pretend, Thursday, 29 September 2011 10:58 (thirteen years ago)
Sambucca is like champagne, I've drunk a fair amount of it in my time but I don't think I've ever actually bought any for myself.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 29 September 2011 10:59 (thirteen years ago)
I still like the south end of Brick Lane, although food-wise Whitechapel is so much better. Anywhere past the brewery is terrible though, it's like all the character has been sucked out of it, also where did all the Bangladeshi people go?
― Matt DC, Thursday, 29 September 2011 11:01 (thirteen years ago)
Who lives there now?
― Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Thursday, 29 September 2011 11:07 (thirteen years ago)
i live nearby and yeah brick lane especially the brewery area is unbearable at the weekends
