It's a well known fact that the internet is only made up of people who used to post in newsgroups, post on sinister or used to chat in the nme chat room. - Jellybean, on the Sloth Adverts thread.

Prompted by a conversation with CarsmileSteve in the pub a while back in which we speculated that there are only actually 100 people on the Internet (or at least the music-related bit of it), and every single one of those remembers Pauly.

So, which other boards did you post on, way back in the pre-ILX days? What name did you post under? Is there anyone here you know who you've never noticed on ILX before?

This is from Matt, aka Turnipfish, aka RunMDC, of NME.com 97-99, Wangst, Loopz and USENET fame.

Go forth, and exchange stories of interweb mentalists past.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been dali or gsdali most places.

UK-Indie 96-98

Warp com for a bit

#vw on irc

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Pauly? Sinister, never. NME chat room, nope.

I used to hang out at tweekitten, it's an indie pop site. There are a couple of semi-regular posters who used to chat there on ILX.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

j0e, aka Bzurk from NME chat, Wangst, Whingeboard, Popex, Popbitch amongst others. And *everybody* remembers Pauly.

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

HateFuckToy from The Brick Shithouse, Bowlie, Undone, Porcelainx, and a few others.
Assorted other net forums as Judd Nelson, Mr Darcy, and Juror8.
WeBL gym Breakfast Club/Heavenly Creatures.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I was only ever Bzurk in NME anyway - j0e everywhere else but Popbitch. And no I'm not telling you who I am there.

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

ahhh, go on.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

J0e, I don't think anyone else here has a popbitch login but me. And I only know who two of those people with icons really are.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

suzy, I don't post anything much anyway and am iconless. I know a few of the bigwigs on there IRL though

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

what about irc:

me = "xm" or "marburg" or "defect" on efnet 1994-1999 mostly in #punk, #2600, etc.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too on all counts - everyone I work with at least lurks there. Oh wait I think one other person here has a login.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Hullo again Matt!

As has been said on the crap ads thread, I was Croooooow on NME Chat from 1998 to sometime during 2000. I got my name from MST3K, which had just started showing on Sci Fi then. Also I posted on the now defunct Whinge Board and Wangst (that was from the programming abilities of Pauly). For some reason I very, very rarely posted on USENET, but once I did cause an amusing tho brief thread on some kooky group where I posted the lyrics to the chorus of Pulp's "Mis-shapes", claiming I had been told them in a dream and some nut wrote back claiming it was a message from the whales of the planet who were conspiring to kill us.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always been Archel on Sinister, and IRC, and when blogging. I use my real name for my own poetry site and Buzzwords. And I haven't really ever been anywhere else...

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about the legendary Whinge Board (ILE before ILE existed essentially, but with fewer posters and more ranting). And the Popscene message board and the now-utterly-ignored Killmusic.

The other people that everyone on the Interweb seem to know are Joss and Dudley from Dublin.

Croooooow - Hello :)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I was also on the much-missed Kosso Kozboard and Theories forums as well. They were BLUDDY GRATE*.

*Interweb nostalgia there.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

NME chat - Nov '99 - May '01 (karmacomedian, blueski, stove_minion, mediocore primarily but also about 30 other terrible terrible names for about 3 days each) - NME chat could be great, i once found myself chatting about bootlegs to someone who turned out to be Trash's Erol Alkan lurking around which was kinda cool

was on Jeepster records chatroom for a while as blueski, i have no idea why as i'm not much of a B&S fan at all

also, woofmusic for a while - when NME chatroom changed a lot of people flocked to woofmusic

warp records chat room briefly - i liked it but it always seemed dead - also, whats happened to the message boards on their site?!

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i was also sexy_babe-Uk on Yahoo chat, yes it was ME all along, you sick bastard

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

my interweb history goes a little something like this:

4ad-l -> indiepop@eskimo.com -> sinister (and tigermilk!) -> #sinister -> [a couple of wilderness years] -> tivo uk message board -> ile

odd to see fh replying to my posts on ilm as he was also on 4ad-l in, what, '85

andy

koogs (koogs), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I was "Lord of deXness"/"deX!" on USENET from 1991 until 1999, at which point I started emailing people I wanted to chat with directly. Then I came here and, since I'd already exposed my real name via email, I saw no point to going back to "deX!".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, I remember karmacomedian

Ferg (Ferg), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

on warp board briefly. as gareth. such imagination!

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I never used a handle. Google away for some of my insane rantings. Mostly on alt.music.alternative, as far back as '91-'92. I also have been known to post on the DroneOn mailinglist, as well as the instrumental surf and Tom Waits lists.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I am like Dan, except it was 1993 to 1999 and I was always me. ME, DO YOU HEAR, ME!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I never bothered with using a handle either. At the time I thought I was like 'keeping it real', but in retrospect it just means everyone remembers what an asshole I was three years ago and I have nothing to hide behind.

Fer- Oh yeah. (Ferg), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ho ho

rec.music.beatles (& occassionally alt.music.smiths) -> Sinister -> ILX

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I was on 4AD-l back in like 95 or 96 but have no idea what email addy I used back then... I've hung round on aus.culture.gothic for years (even though I'm hardly a goth), and the old Cocteau Twins web BB back when it was hosted on some uni server I forget the URL of - that BB was cool.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't suppose Yahoo groups count really, and that's all for me - a couple of PoMo lit ones and one for my circle of friends (still in those in fact), a couple on old soul music, and two comics ones (Kirby and DC war - kind of drawn into those by a friend).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 26 February 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

ach I have just noticed I wrote 'occassionally'.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 27 February 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

ILx is the first board i've been part of. i've been a member of other sites (like Ev*rything2) and a few mailing lists but i've never been particularly visible. i've always been electric sound of jim wherever i've gone..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 27 February 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Not *everywhere*, Jim ;P Well as of recently anyway!

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 27 February 2003 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

that was a tactical necessity

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 27 February 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

which ended up failing miserably thanks to this small freakin' town

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 27 February 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The Warp boards were shut down because they were increasingly full of nutters and you couldn't post anything without it erupting into a colossal flame war.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 February 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

J0e, I don't think anyone else here has a popbitch login but me

Me, although I don't go there any more despite knowing Mr Popbitch himself. I used to use Global Underground when I cared about progressive house. Patrick on ILM knows me from there.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 27 February 2003 10:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and I used to moderate the Mixmag ones, but that was work/ a slow form of torture.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 27 February 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I was on Usenet 88-98, and then nothing really, then here for the last year or so. I have always been Andrew Farrell, keeping it real.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 27 February 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

How many of you have MetaFilter accounts?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 27 February 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I do. Never used it though.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Have posted on Analogue Heaven and Analogue Heaven Off-Topic for a number of years (I use my real name, spelled w/an f, not ph) AHOT is really good, a proper little interweb community, a bit like this. Backing up thee original poster in thiz thread, I notice many ov thee regulars from AH/AHOT in a lot of electronic musician's boards & lists. I also post occasionally on the-gas-station, but it's often a pretty bad-tempered scene, so I don't do too much there really. sinister & all that I have no experience of.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 27 February 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I did post a coupla times on the nme boards a couple of years ago, but i found the interface so slow & clunky that i gave up. I used to troll (I am ashamed to admit) on the melody maker bulletin board (as prog rock old fart, or various variations on that) as well, but shortly after I started, they closed melody maker down (I killed it! haha!!) trolling on MM was too easy really. All you had to do was post "PRML SCRM = Sux0r!!!!!1!" and they would all line up to take a pot shot at you. Then when one of them called you a fag, you'd jump on them for that, and then sit back & watch it kick off. Really, I'm not very proud of this.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 27 February 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to post on usenet, but I don't even remember the years. A few in the late 90s is about as specific as I can get.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 27 February 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
I used to post to firefly.com ("supersonica") and rec.games.roguelike.nethack.
