You post this as soon as I get a letter asking us about restrictions to Llama trekking in West Dorset from the Earl of Sandwich.

Brit Valley Llamas, if you were interested.

Sarah, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't believe Hanley isn't in one of those above. Rhinos, Giraffes, Zebras, Buzzards I reckon.

Does anyone know what noise a giraffe makes?

Ronan, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Giraffes make no noise: their necks are too long for vocal cords, or something.

mark s, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That must be a nightmare. Can you get special ones made for them or something, it could be a charitable campaign.

Ronan, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark S - that was almost Baranesque!

I'm planning on going llama trekking myself Sarah - good work the Earl of Sandwich!

Hippos, Elephants, Wildebeests, no preference. My "chubby chasing" extends to the animal kingdom.

Tom, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rhinos: So much meaner than Hippos

Elephants: Giraffes have to spread their legs to drink. Ah... to have a prehensile nose...

Zebras: Mean horses.

Buzzards: Ah! To fly!

It's not an answer, but.... Well, I recently saw a movie called "The Gods Must Be Crazy". One of the characters said if a rhino sees a fire, he will stomp it out. Is that true?

Jennifer Petritsch, Monday, 7 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ask a scientist

mark s, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually giraffes do have vocal chords but because they are so long the noise they make is inaudible to the human ear - it is too low because the chords are too long. So Mark S wasn't far off.

Pete, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does that mean that Barry White is as accurately described as the "Giraffe of Love"?

N., Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, because you can hear his voice, therefore his voice is not too deep to be inaudible. Walrus of love is accurate because walruses have deep voices and are fat - and like good, sweet lovin'.

Pete, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought he was the hippopotamus of love.

N., Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no that's oprah.

Rhins:Tough, strong, mean, dangerous. Hippos:Bulky, burly, and even more dangerous. You people think that hippos are cute, lovable and harmless but they are highly aggressive they are know to topple over rafts, canoes and are known to cripple man. They are actually more dangerous that rhinos.

Don, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A two L llama, that's a beast.

Pyth, Saturday, 6 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is this a 'who would win in a fight?' thread? I'm going for the rhino on land but the hippo in water, the elephant unless the giraffe runs away, the wildebeest over the weedy zebra, and the buzzards could fly away so the hyenas certainly couldn't catch them. Does that help?

Martin Skidmore, Sunday, 7 July 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Is this a 'who would win in a fight?' thread?"

No, it's for deciding who gets to drive the Bang Bus.

That floating baby hippo is a wonder and a half.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

also one time i was at the zoo and they were preparing to give the baby hippo a bath. this was in the children's petting zoo (behind a small, low fence). they had filled a little kiddie pool (the kind you put out on the lawn) with warm water from a hose. the hippo was standing in front of it looking down, off to one side, very sheepishly (a little sad, too). the zookeeper was pouring water from the hose onto his back, petting him, saying "it's ok, it's ok, see?" then she turned to us and said "well, he's a little nervous about going in because he thinks it's going to be cold"

baby hippos win!!

vahid (vahid), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Aww, the nice.

Rumpy Pumpkin (rumpypumpkin), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

See what I love about the floating baby hippo photo is that said baby hippo is all wide-eyed and wondrous and his/her parent has a smug smile going, "Yeah, I got a cute kid and what do YOU have?"

Just beautiful. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Just what is it that makes baby hippos so cute, so appealing?

Nemo (JND), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

That they are small and wee.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It makes no sense that hippos are cute.

It may be apocryphal, but I heard long ago that hippos kill more people than any other large mammal in Africa. Crocodiles may be somewhat more dangerous than hippos, but then, they're not mammals, amirite?
