Are any of you other the counter medication junkies? If so, what are you taking to feed your addiction?

Tristan Omega, Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you mean Over the Counter or am I missing something?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 February 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah... that's it! Kinda groggy from all the Nighttime cold medication I've been taking to get over this "bug" I caught at work a week ago. I don't know if it is helping but I am sleeping and drooling a lot.

Tristan Omega, Thursday, 27 February 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Most brand name OTC painkillers have a generic equivalent (or are generic + caffeine + fancy sugar coating). Generics are a fraction of the price of, say, Anadin.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 27 February 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Or, say, Pro Plus (which is what has kept me alive today).

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I want some Olivia Tremor Control painkillers.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Do they kill off the band?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Robo DM, brahs.

hstencil, Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i will forever regret my robo experience

my impression is that you can loads of great stuff over the counter in US pharmacies. Isn't codeine legal over there? codeine is great. as a painkiller and aid to sleep, at least, as I found when I was prescribed it once.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 27 February 2003 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Ephedrine is still legal in most states (although that probably will change soon). It's nasty but effective.

I'd be surprised if over-the-counter codeine is still legal anywhere in the U.S., given the crackdown on opiates.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 28 February 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

border jumpers can always get otc meds from towns like nogales, mexicali an tj. stuff we gringoes need scripts for like oxycodon, demerol and your run of the mill anabolic steroid. my stateside otc bing is any ephedrine based diet pill like ripped fuel or xenedrine. double the rda with a six pack of diet dr pepper is pretty much how i stay awake for classes these days.

zigzag, Friday, 28 February 2003 00:24 (twenty-two years ago)

ephedrine is banned OTC in australia, and they're trying to restrict the purchase of pseudoephedrine (which seems to me like trying to restrict the sale of non-alcoholic champagne, but there you go..)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 February 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

my scalp tingles at the mear mention of the word ephedrine.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 28 February 2003 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Codeine is not legal in the states but it is legal in Canada. I heart Canada.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 28 February 2003 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

What the heck do you put in your T3s then?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 28 February 2003 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a terrible OTC pharmaceuticals junkie. I take codiene-based painkillers every single day, I can't get off the damn things, it is really fucked up and frankly I'm at a loss as to how to deal with it (its a mild narcotic, you know).

Also like my pseudoephedrine, but as Jim said they're trying to crack down on that in Aus because dodgy speed lab types were buying up big on it and cooking it into shitty fake speed somehow. SO now you get the third degree and filthy looks like you're some junkie when you ask for some sudafed. Bastards.

I am currently loaded with codiene and sudafed thanks to the flu I seem to be coming down with, and the combination of that and reading the TV show thread has sent me quite batty.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 February 2003 00:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Codeine is not sold otc in the States but is available in script meds like T3 as well as a few others. If you want to load on the codeine dose on these baby opiate cocktails use ones that don't contain Tylenol (acetaminophen) since you'll OD (renal/hepatic failure) on that quicker than the codeine itself. The other pain killer that is used by the pharmaceuticals to mix with codeine aspirin. It is safer than Tylenol.

jethro, Friday, 28 February 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

at least you can still get your stomach pumped with aspirin.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 28 February 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Or, if you are susceptible, you'll get an ulcer and bleed out before you burn out.

jethro, Friday, 28 February 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

There are ways of leeching the paracetamol out of the codiene in the tabs avaible here, something about slowly dissolving them in cold water and letting sediment settle, I don't know. People will do all kinds of things to get at the good stuff in meds.

But you dont wanna OD on paracetamol. Guaranteed liver failure and they cant do anything about it. What a way to die.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 28 February 2003 01:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm with that trayce... you have probably heard all the tales by old junkies who'd do all kinds of things to squeeze the opium out of a dose of paregoric to feed their addiction... smack addicts who collect cottons and spoon boil trying to catch a few more molecules of heroin they won't even be able to feel... crack addicts baking the crystal residue of spent pipes hoping for a little more heaven... nicotine addicts scouring the ground and public ash cans for a couple of butts... down and out winos going into drug stores to drink all the cold medicine, aftershave and rubbing alcohol before they get thrown out on their asses so they can alleviate their DTs... oh the joys of the depraved!

jethro, Friday, 28 February 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Pseudoephedrine is commonly stolen in US drug shops by people making meth and its therefore been put behind the counter in many places but I don't think its in danger of being made a prescription drug. More likely it'll be one box per customer. Its pretty much the number one ingredient in all cold medicines.

This is the only stuff that clears me up when I've got a cold, but it dries me up really bad as well. I'm sure it doesn't help that I practically live in a desert to begin with.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:23 (twenty-two years ago)

NyQuil is where it's at. I'm addicted to the stuff. Can't get to sleep anymore without a glass of wine and a shot of Nyquil.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 28 February 2003 08:50 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
I take Nyquil. I take double the recommended dosage. I don't give a fuck. It makes me feel good, all floaty like.

Allri, Thursday, 22 April 2004 07:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"NyQuil, NyQuil, NyQuil, we love you! You giant fucking Q!"

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 22 April 2004 07:40 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Go for the DM. Two years ago the local grocery store had generic brand DM for 3 dollars a bottle and it just so happened to be a 2-for-one deal as well. That was insane. The next morning i lost hearing in my left ear depending on what floor i was in the house.

Please PLEASE be sure to avoid anything with guafiessen (or however its spelt) in it. Unless you want to die a bloody vomiting death.

Adam Bruneau, Sunday, 30 May 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

got some stuff to numb my sore throat yesterday at Boots; i was like "i need something to numb my throat" and like a shot she reached over and pulled out this stuff, like candy tablets, "lozenges" i suppose. they numb the area they're right around, and they're tremendously effective at it. the trouble is, in order to numb your throat - rather than the inside of your mouth - you'd have to halfway gag on it for about five minutes. DUD.
