Phew... okay, back from heightened to just a medium level of anxiety. It's now safe to come out from underneath my desk.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheaply varnished MDF ain't gonna save you, mister.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

How did you know what my desk looks like??

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

*creeps up behind Aaron with a big axe*

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Finally I can return to my apartment building.

Nemo (JND), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

No Lara no!!!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

*-THUD-*

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you mind if I leave my axe here while I run to the loo?

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

sure it's just down the hall... I mean... *gurgle gurgle death rattle*

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Could you aim that axe at Ridge instead? Thanks.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 February 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It's probably useless to post Onion links because everyone's already read the story, but this is still hilarious.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

how do they determine what code we're at anyway?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Kinda like in Mortal Kombat, I think.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

So it's scientific.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

More like a bunch of guys get together in a room and say, "Hm, are they serious about bombing us soon or not?" "We don't know." "Mmm."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Scientist 1- "Scientist 2! What are you wearing? It's code yellow today! Didn't you get the memo?"

Scientist 2- (pouts)

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 27 February 2003 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a carefully calcuated matrix based on drumming on public support for war against, oh, Iraq (if you really want to get cynical about it).

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 27 February 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I just hacked together a little utility for displaying the current threat level on my desktop yesterday, and they've now conveniently changed the status so I could see if it works. (It does.) Thanks guys!

I like how Utah stayed at yellow and the state homeland defense guy basically said 'everybody knows this stuff only applies to new york and d.c.'

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

So what you're telling me is the Mormons are an easy target? Interesting. Very interesting.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but Utah and the Mormons have got...

a) lots of guns
b) two years supply of food and water + the infrastructure to keep the stockpiles moving.
c) super-duper immune systems from all the toxic shit that blows down from Dugway Proving Grounds.

You'd be out of your freaking mind to mess with them...

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Friday, 28 February 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Hawaii stayed at blue!

Mormons are easy targets unless you get one of those orthodox Mormons that are still angry about the church dropping bigamy. Do not fuck with those guys.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:01 (twenty-two years ago)

We had an article in the paper this week about how Seattle is a "second tier terrorist threat" city, which made me laugh. Oooooh, the Space Needle! Huge international symbol, that. Maybe when there's a spiffy new monorail system to be attacked I'll worry...

lyra (lyra), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Seattle does always get mentioned, although not as much as New York or DC or the Golden Gate Bridge which clearly has to have been specifically targeted at some point as much play as it gets in the alerts. Atlanta gets a little heat also because of the CDC.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

The Mall of America was mentioned as a target once also (suicide bomber probably) because, you know, it's the Mall of AMERICA.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 28 February 2003 05:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how Utah stayed at yellow and the state homeland defense guy basically said 'everybody knows this stuff only applies to new york and d.c.'

NY has been "orange" all along. Probably a fashion thing.

Seattle is considered a target because it's believed that it was targeted previously.
