Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

duh.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 February 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

So, is you're answer "duh (of course they're ugly)" or "duh (this is a stupid post)"? The reason I was asking is because I think any of these people would look pretty normal in every day life but because they're celebrities, they somehow go from "hot" to hideous. I actually thought they were not really hot to begin with.

The only one who looks super wicked ugly to me is Courtney... and Cameron... they both look like pigs (literally, not figuratively). What's her face in the middle is jogging. She'd probably still look fine after she stopped jogging.

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It's duh that people look like shit sometimes, and it's only freaky when they're famous and you usually only see them after they've been touched by a team of professionals.
Post more, they're funny.
It's weird that they're all C's though.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

judging someone's appearance from a bad picture is not a wise thing to do.
Obviously, no one can look as good in person as they do w/good lighting and make-up. Doesn't mean they're ugly, though

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

What are you guys talking about??? Celebrities are flawless! That's why they're CELEBRITIES!! Duh.

Someone post the picture of Avril.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Diaz is still pretty hot in her ugly picture. Everybody knows C.Love is a skank, and Applegate is what 45 now? Didn't MWC first air during the Nixon administration?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

is this the Avril you mean?
http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/MPF/roverctrlnav/images/avril.jpg

another example of how valuable make-up artists and lighting can be.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

christina applegate is thirty-one.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

when i first saw Applegate's 'ugly' photo, I thought it was Stockard Channing!

Dude, I don't care what you say, Avril still looks hot there

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

if you look close you can see that she's wearing a Crass pin

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The upper Christina one makes her look like one of those guys in the upcoming Matrix movies (ie, the REAL heroes, the ones trying to kill Keanu).

Okay, that about wraps it up.

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry, but Xtina looks pretty good in that middle picture. Maybe like about 50,000,000 hippy chicks I've met in my life-time, but not bad. Probably better than with the make-up/air-brushing etc.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Nickalicious, what surprised me is that Christina looks like a FUCKING LITTLE KID as opposed to the 20-something streetwalking whore I see on my televsion. As a little kid or a streetwalking whore, I find her very repellent, personally.

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

You people are over-picky. You know, I'd kill to look as good as some of those "repulsive hideous ugly no makeup" pictures when I'm *wearing* makeup.

kate, Friday, 28 February 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Aguilera comes out of this looking the best, regardless of if she is a little kid, a streetwalking whore, a little whore, a streetwalking kid, or a little streetwalking whore.

oops (Oops), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

the 'ugly' anderson pic scares me less than her normal glossy tarted-up photo-shoot stuff.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

really, they're only ugly on the inside

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

all this "whore" stuff is pretty judgemental, don't you think?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh, the "ugly" stuff is kind of judgmental too.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Madonna came out looking the best. Yasmine Bleeth is probably the worst. She looks like a damn crack whore! Jennifer Lopez certainly don't turn me on and that picture cinched it; she really does look like a few thousand average people in any city.

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Can someone post a picture of a man for a change?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think they all look fine. Well I mean relative to their default (Courtney L*ve I'm looking at you gah! my eyes!). Some of them look better in the Deansplanet and ebaum pictures than in the weird airbrushed mag shots.

It's weird that they're all women though. Is no one interested in male celebrities without the airbrushing, flattering lights and cgi alterations?

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed, but calling someone a whore is somehow uglier than calling their appearance ugly...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

that referred to Nick's post

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

all this "whore" stuff is pretty judgemental, don't you think?

Have you heard Xtina talk about herself recently? This is the angle she wants to shoot for; we're playing right into her hands.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 28 February 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I wasn't calling her a whore, I meant she looks like a whore. Big difference. One statement is a slanderous lie, the other is an obvious fact.

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Can someone post a picture of a man for a change?
On the "celebrities without makeup" pages, I have yet to come across a picture of a man (figuratively speaking).

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

that was an unfortunate figure of speech

felicity (felicity), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I can tell you 2 things about male celebrities! Conan O'brien looks like a damn freak in person with all the makeup he has on (during the taping of his show, I mean)! Also, William F. Buckley Jr. is a disaster in real life, with skin literally peeling off his face, dandruff all over his shoulders, matted hair, horrible breath and rotten teeth. Great personality, too.

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to see that. Post a picture! or if you can't find one, give us the other 850 words ;)

this thread scares the shit out of me. i think if i were pamela and i knew what i looked like it would be impossible to continue the charade, no matter how big ny breasts were.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Buckley looks really freaky in person.

hstencil, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, so you've seen him to! does this sound about right? "skin literally peeling off his face, dandruff all over his shoulders, matted hair, horrible breath and rotten teeth. Great personality, too. "

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

What the hell is Buckley doing in that photo? It looks like he's trying to wriggle out of both his coat and his skin.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

A coat made of skin. Ed Gein-style!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

at first i thought that S Cat's picture was a response to chris' picture and i was very amused.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 28 February 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

S Cat - the words that came to mind when I saw Buckley are "burn victim."

What, that's not what MJ looks like these days?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 28 February 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I alone in finding this among my least favourite threads?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

No Martin, people don't like to be shallow, so of course they respond predictably when it seems like someone is running a beauty contest. People are, of course, against the fake plastic Hollywood b.s., so they're sort of "for" reality and down-to-earth beauty.

I'm not running a beauty contest. I'm just asking the question: are these people "ugly" or just normal? A few of them are truly surprising (Yasmine and Courtney), but for the most part I wouldn't say it's anything unexpected.

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

There is no sign of people being 'for reality' here, whatever exactly that would mean - I think some of the 'unattractive' pics look great. I think attractive women sometimes bring out the worst in people, and they get condemned if they are glossy and made up, if they are caught without make up, if they have the shape asked of them, if they don't, if they try to look glamorous, if they don't. And of course people assume they are stupid. God knows as an unattractive middle aged funny-shaped male I have no axe to grind here, but there is a glee in some people at finding pics like this that I find distasteful. (I'm not getting at you SC: your comments seemed perfectly reasonable.)(I'm not actually aiming this at anyone here, but this seems to be some sort of example of something that troubles me.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yasmine Bleeth is probably the worst. She looks like a damn crack whore!

I hope that was unintentional, because HAHAHAHAHA!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I actually just went and found more because someone asked me to post more of 'em. I was originally just going with the initial 3 there...

I think those web sites exist for a pretty basic reason and the reason for that reason is pretty sad. See, most of these women are "sex goddesses" right? So, when they find an "ugly" picture, I think they feel sort of outraged or vindicated or something and it gives them a chance to say, "HA! You're not hot shit! You're hideous! Get off your high horse!"

But, the sad thing is that it's relatively hard for women to be seen unless they are "sex kitteny". Even the sort of anti-image Jeanine Garafalo (sp?) was being a little "sexy" in her Cats & Dogs movie.

'Tis a weird thing. The Courtney Love one did give me some pleasure, I must admit.

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yasmine Bleeth is probably the worst. She looks like a damn crack whore!

I hope that was unintentional, because HAHAHAHAHA!

Sadly, it was a poor attempt at humor (but intentional).

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

(written five posts ago:) no, martin, you're really not. my self-image is pretty low at the moment so maybe i'm a little thin-skinned (oh geez i better add a "no pun intended") when it comes to this stuff, but this makes me feel awful. i don't think i'm repping for "the real" or anything, i just don't like 'point-and-laugh' commentary accompanying lousy photos of people who look like yr average mall-dwelling teenage girls, soccermoms and old men on their bad days. am i meant to take solace in the apparent fact that with the vogue design team and an apple G4 i too can be famous?

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

But you're gorgeous, Mitch! We've seen photos!

Janeane Garofalo has always been more than a little sexy.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Mitch, I suppose you could take solace in that fact but I haven't. In fact, as a guy, I'm almost jealous. I mean, guys wear make up on the set, but you can't really go to the extremes women can go to with makeup and hair to really change your appearance as a man. Of course, the upside to this is men have a much lower standard of beauty to live up to (Jim Belushi, Bill Mahrer), so I guess I wouldn't have to wear so much makeup... I suppose it is possible that I could become a star, afterall...

But, I don't have the talent, so forget that whole paragraph.

I mean, really I was just interested in people's opinions or whatever is on your mind. You certainly don't have to point and laugh! (I don't think many people have done that, actually). Sidenote: that's a GOOD day for that particular old man. Like I said, he looks like hell in person.

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, the upside to this is men have a much lower standard of beauty to live up to (Jim Belushi, Bill Mahrer)

Okay, you've trumped the Yasmine Bleeth caption with this one. In what universe are Jim Belushi and Bill Maher standards of beauty?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

In the 'bongs, beef and blowjobs' universe. Then again, maybe not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, you've trumped the Yasmine Bleeth caption with this one. In what universe are Jim Belushi and Bill Maher standards of beauty?

I wouldn't say their the highest standards of beauty, but acceptable or passable levels of beauty. If you look as "good" as Jim Belushi, you're all set. You're a star, babe!

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm having a difficult time with their/they're/there today....

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

You should speak to my wife (actually, all of my female friends) about the proliferation of Ugly Male Actors (and their role as wish-fulfillment vehicles for Ugly Male Writers).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

But those writers have DREAMS, Dan! Not necessarily good ones, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Without makeup, I look like a completely different person. It's entirely because of the stuff other people touched upon on this thread. "Oh look Britney Spears has a ruddy face! SHE IS HIDEOUS!" What the hell?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 28 February 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I truly wish it was common and acceptable for men to wear makeup. It seems hardly fair that women can sort of "patch" their complexion and when I have a bad string of weeks where I just start breaking out for some reason, I have to shave, irritate my zits and walk around like a swollen, festering bucket of puss. (This ALWAYS seems to happen the day after my girlfriend says, "Wow, your skin is totally clear.")

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

To answer the question: they're not ugly at all. They all look either perfectly-normal, better-than-normal, or normal-on-a-really-bad-day. To wit:

Love: Doesn't look physically "ugly" so much as she looks like she has serious food poisoning or just passed out in an alley after a vigorous projectile-vomiting session. She does lots of drugs and looks like that all the time -- get used to it.

Applegate: Looks not just like a "normal" woman but a really nice-looking one. She looks like my neighbor in that picture, actually, and I think my neighbor's good-looking enough that when she taps on the wall I don't just turn the music down -- I turn it off. If she weren't famous and jogged like that into a Starbucks loads of guys would think she was really attractive, in an "I work in advertising and drive a Volkswagen and that's the kind of girl I'd marry" kind of way.

Diaz: Same as Applegate, except Applegate has a normal-looking face whereas Diaz's is actually pretty unique. You wouldn't drool, or anything, but you'd think she was nice-looking, and after you'd hung out with her a few times you'd start realizing that you're sort of taken by her face and you like her eyes and you'd really like a chance to make out with her at some point.

Spears: I have never been big on girls that look like this, but some people are. In this I think she looks pretty much like an average person walking down the street; I'm sure some guys would look at her and think she was sort of cute. I would make fun of those guys, but not her, because she'd just be some normal girl walking down the street to where she works as a receptionist at a sales firm full of middle-aged assholes who make sexist jokes about her personal life just because she's the ostensibly-hot young receptionist.

Anderson: Actually looks fantastic in that picture, 1000x times better than usual. She has this sort of Valkyrie housewife vibe going on: in normal circumstances people would look at that and say she looked wonderful. Seriously, if your friend said his aunt was dropping by and then that walked in with a flat-average body you would still think "dude, your aunt's sort of gorgeous." Seriously, that's great hair, and check out the Teutonic bunching between the eyebrows. She's like St. Pauli Girl's mom, or something.

Lopez: She relies pretty heavily on makeup, yeah, but look at that -- it's a run-of-mill nice-looking Latina. Nice-looking enough that even if she was walking through the old South South Bronx with a great ratty ass-hiding coat on she's still get hollered at a little.

Aguilera: This one's interesting because she's actually weird-looking -- especially since that hair doesn't vibe so peacefully with the no-makeup look. But weird-looking in a good way: in that top one she looks like some kind of elf cutie. Is it just me or does it seem like she's watching tennis there? And in the bottom one she's just cute. In a normal club anywhere in the U.S. people would say "hey, check out that cutie."

Lavigne: Generic North American high-school girl. Actually, on the good side of generic North American high-school girl. The guys who actually got chicks would just think of her as, you know, some girl walking around, but there'd be some less-cool guys who aspired to be in her league.

Bleeth: It's a friggin mug shot, and to be honest it doesn't look so different from the headshot it's next to. I mean, come on. If you were watching COPS and you saw that shit you know you'd think to yourself "Hey, that crack whore's not bad at all," and then you'd start wondering if, since you're supposedly better than the people on COPS, you could pick up a not-bad crack-whore like that and she'd be all impressed that you had a job and a decent apartment and stuff. Then you'd start wondering if maybe it'd actually be sort of fun to cook up meth in motel rooms and sleep with Jerry Springer hos and some part of you will say "yeah, it sort of might be" while the rest of you felt really, really dirty and made you turn off the TV and go read a book.

Ciccone: Looks great. And she's a middle-aged mother. Seriously, how did your mother look in her forties? Did you call your mom an ugly pig and put her picture on websites for everyone to make fun of? Fuck no, you didn't, cause your mom was nice-looking. And she still didn't look one tenth as great as Madonna looks in that picture.

Sorvino: It's not like Sorvino has ever pretended to be some sort of sex goddess -- usually she plays a great-looking "average" woman. And let me just say that that picture of her is my favorite in the set, because she looks like a completely "average" woman who's just secretly really great looking. She looks like some woman working the information desk in a bookstore, who after the 6th time you can't remember Jan Martel's name and she tells you you realize she's a secret sexpot in an ugly sweater, not gorgeous but (even better) just generally lovable-looking.

Jackson: Looks disturbingly like Courtney Cox.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 28 February 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks, nabisco, that was funny stuff. I don't think I would be fantasizing about Yasmine on COPS, though... but, it was nice to see what goes on in your mind!

I know exactly what you're saying. Many of the people up there just bother me, but I don't find them hideous. I just happen to not be particularly attracted to any of them, actually, with or without makeup, which is obviously based on my perception of who they more than what they look like (although, I really don't like the looks of Cameron Diaz, which is not to say she's ugly. If I met her in real life and liked her, I'd love the way she looks).

Did anyone figure out whose boobs those are on MJ?

Scaredy Cat, Friday, 28 February 2003 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

nabisco has singlehandedly made me feel better about this thread. I will tell you that I've seen actresses with no makeup getting coffee and they tend to be stunning (if a bit too thin usually). no one is above a bad picture.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

also, Cameron Diaz in person would knock your socks off.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, she probably would if she knew I thought she had a pigface. She'd probably knock me flat on my ass! Her nose and lips just bother me, but like I said, if I knew her it would be different. It's easy to critique a star completely superficial way, but if she were the girl next door, the last thing I would do is judge her by looks. If anything, with real day-to-day people, I gravitate toward plain Janes and Joe Shmoes.

Scaredy Cat, Saturday, 1 March 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i also think that pam a. looks nicer in that pic than she does typically.
