Stare at the grey dot in the centre.

Now move your head forward and backward.
As your head moves closer to your monitor
and then back away from your monitor, the circles
will appear to be spinning.

Concentrate on the four dots in the middle of the picture(4 black dots) for about 30 seconds. Then close your eyes and tilt your head back keeping them closed. You will see a circle of light, concentrate on the circle. What do you see?

I'd be interested in an explanation of the first phenomenon - I understand the second one okay, and had seen it before.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 1 March 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

me too martin - i guess it has something to do with depth perception

haha i like when you stare at #2 and then try #1 again directly afterwards

minna (minna), Saturday, 1 March 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

also after a while does #2 morph into darth vader for anyone else?

minna (minna), Saturday, 1 March 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the explanation lies in the round shape of the eye, the eye is round and when ever you're zooming into the dot the circles surround the zooming point and thus yr vision.when you zoom the image shape grows(when you're getting closer to it) the directions of the lines 'growth'(movement) are the illusion, they their shape points to different directions and the message you're getting to the brain is that its moving in different directions, coz of the round shape of the eye. i think

Has anyone got a Flash/Java/whatever verision of an .exe file I got sent ages ago. It was an animated thing and after staring at it for a while, one looked at one's hand and it was all melty and horrid.

That red X doesn't make my hand all melty and horrid, I'm glad to say.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 1 March 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

yea me too, i don't get this one, they say its suppose to seem like yr skin's croling or something hehe.

rex jr, Saturday, 1 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, it was just a red X for me before, but now I see the moving spirals. I stared at it for 30 seconds, but it has had no effect on how my hand looks.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 1 March 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the second one do? I don't get it.

thom west (thom w), Saturday, 1 March 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It produces an afterimage of Sting.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Saturday, 1 March 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

No that's not working for me either but the old one did, I promise.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 1 March 2003 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

#2 didn't work for me, so I just went into Photoshop and inverted it and ignored the stuff on the bottom and THERE WAS JESUS!
