"I never thought you'd be a junkie because heroin is so passe" is such a diss until you realise that it's *more* of a diss to the rock star ex-boyfriend, saying "Sorry, being a heroin addict is more exciting and more fulfilling than being with you"

A friend of mine and i were talking about this song a couple years back and he pointed out that it completely sounds as if the guy who's singing the song is also the guy who put her there. Makes it extra-special-super-stalker-creepy.

I've never thought that. Maybe it's partly because of my awareness of Jonathan Richman's persona ca. those early records. I imagine the narrator to be the "best guy friend" of this girl, who watched her descend into drug abuse, maybe get used by a few of those burly hippie johnnys, etc., and who is still carrying the torch--hoping perhaps that her hospital stay will turn her away from the life she was leading and make her realize that she was in love with the narrator all along. But the narrator is hardly confident enough to come out and say that, so he meekly suggests, "Let me back into your life." Which is creepy and sweet and heartbreaking all at the same time.
