Malaysia is known for not having toilet paper anywhere (do not touch things with your left hand and do not touch anybody else's left hand, I've heard) and Ecuador is rumored to be a shithole. The only one of yr three I've heard ANY good things abt is Costa Rica.

Care to expand on this? Was tempted by Thailand, but worried that the rest of the Western world would be there as well. Is there an escape from this/anywhere else in this part of the world that is comparable?

PS: Has anyone ever been to Medan, North Sumatra? How safe is it for Westerners... I enjoy telling my father, "Oh, I'm planning a trip to the country with the largest Muslim population in the world". I know the bombings/kidnappings took place in Java but what's it like in the North? Also, only 5 hours from Phuket but i'm thinking that's a little too touristed.

Cheers, Ned.
Five hours later, finally finished filing my stories - after being tear-gassed, water-cannoned, walking around 20km, sweaty, exhausted...
Full disclosure: I write for state-owned conservative media here, so my news reports aren't particularly worth much (yay, autocracy) - but I do it because the avenues for actual journalism are slim to non-existent. and where I am, for all its faults, is great for noobs like me because we cover everything from goofy ribbon-cutting ceremonies to yes, massive chaotic protests. Also pays better.
The leftist, online-based, media here is just as disgustingly biased anyway and they don't expose their journalists to as many different forms of newswriting (it's 90% politics all the time).
That said, today was a particularly hard day to work - would've relished being on the other side of the fence for once.

I've been to two of three, and would favour Ecaudor over Malaysia except for food, which Malaysia obviously trounces it in. Some of the best food I've had in Malaysia.

I'm in San Jose. What surprised me the most was the amount of reggae/dub on the local radio stations, which it probably shouldn't, being connected to the Caribbean and all

Costa Rican mainland (as well as Nicaragua) is about to be hit by a hurricane for the first time since 1851, which sounds pretty scary. Thankfully my gf live in the central valley, which should be relatively safe... But apparently the coastal areas aren't very well protected against something like this, which sounds scary.
