So, this Thursday it's the annual MTV music awards...what will Lil'Kim wear this year...who will Fred Durst sit next to?...Is it worth staying up late for?...Classic moment...Puffy 1997, bad dancing, this one's dedicated...to Princess Diana...Anyway, more generally what do you like or dislike about award shows...What's the most obscure award show you've seen?

jel, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Classic moment...Puffy 1997, bad dancing, this one's dedicated...to Princess Diana

Change that to P. Diddy 2001 and a certain deceased singer and I think you'll have another such moment on your hands in a few days.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If either OBD or Howard "Fartman" Stern show up, then I'll watch.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I meant ODB (as in Ol' Dirty Bastard). Unless there's a rapper out there named OBD (Ol' Body Deodorant?) that I've never heard of.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The whole Britney Spears thing last year was amazing the first time I saw it... truly a watershed moment in pop history

JM, Monday, 3 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yo. I'll be monitoring the VMAs this year and keeping a blog as the event progresses. If you're interested in checking it out, please feel free to bookmark this link.

Award shows are fine, even if they're self-congratulatory and more about the event than the works being honored. Hell, it gives me something to do, at the very least.

I heard that Ms. Spears would be performing a NEW song this coming Thursday, actually. Hubba hubba.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I heard that Ms. Spears would be performing a NEW song this coming Thursday, actually. Hubba hubba.

Yeah, it's her declaration of independence from Pepsi in praise of Coke. Trained Pepsi assassins will then invade the stage to kill her, but Justin Timberlake will take the slugs in defense of his lady love and die saving her precious life. He will then be assumed into heaven and a spontaneous tribute record will be released that immediately tops the charts.

At which point Jamie Foxx then reveals it's all a put-on. Endless larfs!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Award shows are truly awful, they are good only for comic reasons unintended by those who produce them. The nominations are poorly thought out, I haven't seen this years but inevitably every year there is a band nominated for best newcomer and best band, I mean which is it? Then you get a token nominee in every category from each genre even though its generally quite obvious which one is going to win. Not to mention the horrible collaborations which seem to be born at awards ceremonies, Robbie Williams and Tom Jones performing "Upside down"? where did I put my shotgun, Texas??? (Texas) and the Wu Tang clan performing one of Texas songs that sounds exactly like all the others. Britney cutting up versions of her own reasonably catchy pop songs till they sound like you've hooked up some vestax to a washing machine with a dolphin on helium singing along, not to mention the overdone dance routines. Then inevitably someone does something "rawwwwwwk", possibly Fred Durst or someone, a mild temper tantrum. God I hate the awards shows, its like Chris Rock and Sarah Ferguson, together at last to present an award.

Ronan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The VMAs are being held about 3 blocks from my house. We're planning on going down there, hiding out in the crowd, taking out Gwen Stefani with blow guns, and then racing back home to watch the aftermath live on MTV.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I will be in a hotel room in Denver with nothing to do on Thursday night - can anyone tell me what time they're on? Ta.

Madchen, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rock and roll Ally, try to get Eve aswell would you?

Ronan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eve is third on our death list, after Missy Elliot. Originally Fred Durst was third but I realized he wasn't worth the blow darts, that's how bad he is.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Where did Carson end up? I know he's on the list somewhere...

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I love Carson. He's fantastic, I mean look at him. You see him on TRL and you're just like, what the hell? What is he doing there? He wears old man clothes and always looks confused and reads off cue cards obviously and badly. He's my hero, that Carson Daly. Plus, all he dates are chicks with huge heads (Jennifer Love Hewitt, Christina Aguilera, Tara Reid), which must mean something.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Missy Elliott? You'll need more than blowdarts for her. Although if you hit her with one she might fly off like when you let the air out of a balloon.

Ronan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's exactly what I'm hoping for.

Is Ja Rule going to be there? I wanna get him too, he pisses me off. Why does he say "Holla" so much? I'm certain that he thinks it means something completely different than it means, cos he says it way too much for him to be using it right.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ja Rule is there...he's performing.

jel, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh fuck yeah, his ass is going down.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I liked Ja Rule on the Hip Hop special of MTV cribs, he seemed like a fun guy.

cabbage, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, he's the worst person ever, holla.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't you mean worst person "eva"?

Ronan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hope you're saving some blowdarts for MechaChristina. And I hope you have help - it'll be hard to sneak around unnoticed, ambushing all these peeps.

Better yet - pull a Courtney Love and storm the post-show. Otherwise, I'll have nothing to write about, duh.

You think Tim Bob / Tim2K / Timmy! will return to bum rush the stage, yo?

David Raposa, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love Christina almost as much as Carson Daly, her and her enormous head and bowlegs, no way am I blowdarting her.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

classic moments, same year -1992 - krist novaselich (sp?) knocks himself out after tossing the bass up in the air and catching it with his forehaed/elton john and axl rose on the dual paino, with slash on top, doing november rain/garth playing drums for u2 on even better than the real thing.

Geoff, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you Americans have a great big VMA 2001 VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS 2 DAYS TO GO logo constantly on the screen, below the MTV logo, but like twice as big? We have, and it's fucking annoying.

Graham, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah that sign is soooo annoying! Third or fifth girl group member gets obscured!

jel, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, but MTV is playing VIDEOS! And, of course, they're offering sumptuous factual tidbits on the left side of the screen as well.

FYI, I posted my extremely biased synopses of the videos nominated on my VMA site - Get clickin'!

David Raposa, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(I've got the urge to rip off David's idea here, but he ripped it off Michael. Sue me)

What's up with American MTV presenters? They're all freakishly deformed boring middle age men. Where do they such ugly anti-hip people?

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does the Backstreet Boys facial hair represent obscure runic symbols? There's no other explanation.

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"So how are you feeling?"

"How long did it take you to get ready?"

"Who are you most looking forward to seeing?"

"Which award do you most want to win?"

Use Other Questions Please

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fatboy Slim, Best Art Direction? It's a guy in a suit in a real hotel. How much art is involved?

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Who's this Gideon guy? He looks like someone's nephew on work experience.

(Dave, I haven't seen an obvious Carrot Top. What am I looking for?)

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The comedy intro routine, and fake smiles/shock all around. Fear the camera.

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Christopher Walken is rocking the Withnail look tonight.

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whereas Alicia Keys has come as Slash.

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham - who the hell was Linkin Park's special guest?

David Raposa, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

God American ad breaks are long. We need three long MTV trailers to pad out the British ads. And you have about 10 of them an hour.

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey Dave, you're the wuss. It's 2am where I am.

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

PS - Carrot Top = schill for American phone company. Scary lookin'. Plastic. NOT FUNNY.

And I retract my claim for wussage. Get some sleep and do something USEFUL with your life.

David Raposa, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave: "The World Famous.....EXECUTOR"

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Macy Gray is a hideous hag and I wish her death.

Ally, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And judging by her airplay here, she really is that desperate.

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

NSync are also hideous hags. BRING ON BRITNEY MOFOS. "Pop" sucks ass, we just said "Wow, the visuals are pretty good, too bad that NSync look like ass and this song sucks it".

Ally, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, we decided we're going to make a boyband, because our boyband couldn't POSSIBLY be as fucking awful as NSync. Wheeler, Ian White, Tracer Hand, Dan Perry and Ramon are IN. Prompted by Steph's suggestion that I imagine Ramon dancing like NSync, which I actually could imagine, frighteningly. Are you other four in? We will make hella cash. I will be the Britney Spears of the gang.

Ally, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Michael Jackson really is getting old. 10 seconds of dancing and he already needs a sit down. Looks exactly the same though, except his face is literally sagging, like hanging off his chin.

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I could hear Jay-Z from my apartment. If I knew they were going to do Izzo outside I'd have gone down there and braved the mob instead of stayed in and baked cookies :(

Ally, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ya went from planning an ambush to baking cookies? Damn, that's a fall.

David Raposa, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, our ceiling caved in at work again today, so I was stuck at work cleaning up and racing about trying to get things fixed til 7:30 cos I was one of the last people there, so I missed the opening so I just went home :(

Ally, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

DON' T LEAN IN!

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

FAT BOYS!

David Raposa, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it was the X-ecutioners.

David: yes, highlights of the evening = Fat Boys and Jay-Z.

This thing is NO FUN to watch alone.

jess, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ben Stiller makes three. Aw, yeah. We ain't! Goin' nowhere!

David Raposa, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nikka Costa + Teleprompter = NO

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nelly Furtado + Missy E = HELL NO.

And what's with Shakira? Gloria Estefan has more rock chops, maaan.

David Raposa, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What is Jennifer Lopez wearing, btw?

Ally, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A nice li'l sun hat, and some sort of semi-modest knit dress/sweater looking thing. Very nice, I think.

David Raposa, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

She looks like a crazy Mexican hobo. I liked the white outfit she was performing in.

Ally, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, check it, it's Bono. Maybe he wants to show off some of that bling bling...

Wait, he wants to rub up against someone? What's going on here, I'm confused by this show. WHERE'S BRITNEY?

Ally, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

THE RAMONES? WHAT IS GOING ON?

Ally, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay, now I'm rambling and I posted all this shit already on my blog but GODDAMNIT, more confusion: none of us recognized Fred Durst!!! He had on a different hat!!! Is this an alternate dimension?

Ally, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That Puddle of Mudd shirt should've been a dead giveaway.

And I was kinda hopin' Wes Borland would sing a bit of some Big Dumb Face nugget. Tho Iron Maiden is OK.

No! Mariah! Shite.

David Raposa, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mick Jagger ignores all the other Lady Marmalade and goes straight to hug Lil'Kim (Cool hair). WTF?

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Graham? Isn't it, like, morning? Get some sleep, hoss!

David Raposa, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, obvious reasons:

1) Pink is devastatingly ugly and mannish.

2) Christina Aguilera is scary.

3) Mya is Mya.

Ergo, he's most attracted to Lil' Kim. Sensible choice.

Ally, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well it's still dark outside, and it's still summer holidays bafore university, so I'm normally up this late/early. Sleep - that's a good idea.

Graham, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i think perhaps the vinyl wiemar whore look that janet was rocking during the aalyiah tribute was perhaps misguided

I'll be watching (been listening to pop a lot more of late, don't care about the awards but want to see the performances). Sadly I'm now on the west coast and will not be able to snicker on the internet along with peeps

I'm watching now on DVR. I care about some performances. The awards are really unimportant to me and pretty much meaningless anyway.
