I assume that people outside of the states who enjoy quality television already know about it..it's a godsend for buffy fans i know. So are you down or will I be forced to put your jaw on the curb?

aiee! NEW

sKINT, Monday, 3 March 2003 21:51 (twenty-three years ago)

"will I be forced to put your jaw on the curb" - that is a terrible image/thought and i was only yesterday discussing that very action as the best and worst bit from 'american history x'.

Clare (not entirely unhappy), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I got it last week but I've not worked out how to use it yet.

pointers

Ed (dali), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

just find a good tracker (http://www.cen.uiuc.edu/~halm/torrent2.html)

yOHIMBE, Monday, 3 March 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
So, how the FUCK do you use this thing? I want The Shield and I don't want to pay for it.

New layman's answers please!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

You go to s u p r n o v a dot org, you see if it's available, you download the torrent file, you open it with BitTorrent, and you wait a few days for it to download.

...in bed. (Chris Piuma), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's ridiculously easy.

...in bed. (Chris Piuma), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:25 (twenty-two years ago)

bittorrent is my diskspace's worst enemy.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Get on AIM and holler if you still haven't figured it out.

...in bed. (Chris Piuma), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Shadow's client is the best. Don't get Azureus, it's java-based and that sucks.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there anything wrong with regular old BitTorrent? I haven't tried the competition.

...in bed. (Chris Piuma), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

is there ANY post your new handle doesn't work with?

...passed out on the bathroom floor (slutsky), Thursday, 15 April 2004 05:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep forgetting it's there.

...in bed. (Chris Piuma), Thursday, 15 April 2004 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The Torrent is alright by this house, especially since we forgot to change the hour on our VCR earlier this month, and so instead of last week's West Wing we ended up with an hour of Oireachtas Report, and instead of Tuesday's Sopranos, we got A Prayer at Bedtime.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 15 April 2004 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What are other really good sites besides suprnova?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 23 April 2004 22:53 (twenty-two years ago)

for what it's worth, suprnöva is apparently somewhat compromised.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 23 April 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really. A lot come up for a few weeks then get DDOS attacked like no tommorow (wonder who's behind that?). The rumour that I've heard about Suprnova is that it manages to stay up as it is run by a lad who is beneath the age of prosecution in whatever country he is in, and that's also why it doesn't do pron as that's one thing he could be called up on.

This site is a good one for links

http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/romeria/bittorrentsites.htm

It's updated very frequently.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 23 April 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

mookieproof, this is what I said originally when someone posted a link to a DVD rip on here - bittorrent/suprnova is very heavily monitored, and one of the rumours doing the rounds is that ISP's are looking at it closely. I'd advise anyone to tread with caution, especially on music downloads.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 23 April 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

@d@m is primarily using this for otherwise unavailable television series, so I don't think he's at risk for any prosecution; if they go after anyone, it will be for software, games, and music, I think. Although there is someone in the UK getting sued by Granada right now for hosting a site with torrent links to Granada programmes. But it was just the site host, not the users, who were threatened with legal action.

Other torrent sites, please.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the only one i use is sharing the groove, which shares losslessly compressed live recordings. it's pretty cool if you're into concert bootlegs.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

What sort of stuff do you want Adam (what can't you find on Suprnova)?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Not surprisingly between those, Sharing The Groove, Suprnova, and SLSK I'm filling a DVD-R every evening.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Even though I've tried opening certain suggested ports in my firewall, I still max out at "only" about 100kbps on cable. People with similar connections claim to get about three or four times that rate. oh well.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Make sure your upload is not limited.

Maneating Leopards of India (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

How do you host a torrent? Do you just .rar the files and then give out the link? If so, we should have an ILX Torrent page.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

you need to run a tracker server i think, but that is a really good idea

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I WILL DO IT.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I can host some torrents ... that is ... IF YOU WANT THE NEW VAN HALEN BEST OF TWO CD SET AND I KNOW THAT YOU DO

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Is mac.torrentskickass back up? It was down for ages.

The Nova has most stuff come through eventually. There was some other place (with the word "Green" in it, maybe?) where I saw some Mac stuff but I lost it with the hard drive.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you just have to 'seed' the torrent file and then host the link somewhere to get it going. Easy enough.

Currently I'm working on building a MythTV computer (like TiVo, but Open Source) that can pull off torrent files from an RSS feed. It will be amazing!

Dale the Panopticalist (cprek), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Private trackers are where it's at. Seriously, don't use Suprnova - especially if you're in the US.

UKnova.com hosts a bit of British telly stuff.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, don't use Suprnova - especially if you're in the US.

Why's that?

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX and .torrent files

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

In short:

Anyone downloading from the same torrent as you can see your IP address.

The RIAA or MPAA are using this information and have been known to send demands to ISPs, who will in turn send the offending a user a letter along the lines of 'we've had complaints about your usage of our service - stop it or we'll all be in trouble'.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

ILX and .torrent files

And the point of this link was?

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

As an exercise left to the reader.

ILX Torrent page = torrent page for ILXORS != torrents on ILX

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

For a second I was worried where that image might have been hotlinked from.

Dale the Panopticalist (cprek), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

FWIW: I think its a bad precedent to actively try to pursue copyright infringement on ILX.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

HEY THE IMAGES AREN'T BEING COPIED THEY'RE STILL ON THE SERVER AND IT IS THE COPYRIGHT OWNER'S SERVER THAT IS THE ONE ALLOWING THEM TO BE DISPLAYED.

Holy Crap! Typhoon is Coming!!! :O (ex machina), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Please. Quite a few of the threads on ILM are about copyright infringement, mp3s, etc etc etc. I agree that torrents shouldn't be on ILX. I would've thought that would've been common sense, but I guess Mr. Noodles thinks less of everyone else than I may in this instance. Still, I think that using torrents could come in handy for ILXORS, esp. in instances of ILXOR copyrighted material, such as the ILX MUSIC COMPS and so on ...

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

great thing is bit torrent. downloaded several bootlegs overnight with it.

splooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand mactorrentskickass. It's just a forum where most people post torrents? None of them seem to work.

*confused*

splooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 5 August 2004 12:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand mactorrentskickass. It's just a forum where

You be at the wrong place. If you find the correct one there is a tracker which you have to register in order to use.

I'm not posting the link because it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Suprn0va search function not working for anyone else?

adam. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 28 August 2004 01:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Re the RIAA etc thing above - it is true theyre tracking individual users. I know two people (individual users of not all that much torrent stuff) who have had cease and desist letters from their ISP after the ISP was contacted by the copyright holder.

people ARE keepin a very close eye on it. I wouldnt touch torrents with a bargepole.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 28 August 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

:( :( :( :(

adam. (nordicskilla), Saturday, 28 August 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah it sucks, but I really dont trust it, I mean if two not-even-leecher type people I know personally can get threatened by their ISP over Firefly episodes or whatever, it cant be good news :(

Then again I, while supporting mp3s for all, like to buy my DVDs and CDs. I'm boring :)

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 28 August 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i had a cease-and-desist back in december, the 2nd time i ever used suprnova. i haven't gone back since. it's ridiculously easy for them to track your ip address and send out warnings.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 28 August 2004 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine if you use nonstandard ports it's a bit more difficult for them to catch you?

I'm pissed cuz my faithful Daily Show tracker has gone down w/o explanation :(

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 19 February 2006 04:03 (twenty years ago)

maybe you have a mean router

nervous (cochere), Sunday, 19 February 2006 04:08 (twenty years ago)

There probably aren't a lot of people trading Buffy eps these days - a torrent seems to need a ton of seeds/downloaders to move fast. Try LimeWire (or equivalent), that's where I got the second season of Entourage a couple of months late.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Sunday, 19 February 2006 05:07 (twenty years ago)

i tried kazaa, absolutely nothing. is limewire particularly different?

Maria (Maria), Sunday, 19 February 2006 05:24 (twenty years ago)

http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=buffy

If it isn't downloading, it is because your ports are closed.

If they are closed try http://www.portforward.com/

svend (svend), Sunday, 19 February 2006 05:46 (twenty years ago)

I feel fairly certain that Buffy is extremely easy to download. I think it is a port forwarding issue.

Casuistry (Chris P), Sunday, 19 February 2006 08:43 (twenty years ago)

@Maria: I don't know the proper terminology for this, but you have to tell your router which port you want to use, and your firewall which port and which programs it has to let through.

Eva van Rein (Gaia1981), Sunday, 19 February 2006 09:45 (twenty years ago)

You have to tell the router which computer to forward the port to.
