Cozen (Cozen), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:29 (twenty-three years ago)

why is it punk or ska? Oh, I guess you mean that ska revival stuff that isn't actually ska. Carry on

oops (Oops), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes good idea oops. sneer at the guy instead of recommending anything that way your secret knowledge remains secret!!

(Punk - type in "Subway Sect". Ska - type in "Prince Buster" :))

Tom (Groke), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

i wasn't sneering, if he likes the ska revival stuff that's great. I just hate it when people use these bands to define ska. Personal sore spot, I guess, since my ex-gf was really into that scene and I don't like being associated w/them when I say that I like some ska. Wouldn't it bother you if you said "I like jazz" and someone said, "Yes, Chuck Mangione, he's great." Most of the people throwing around the term 'ska' don't seem to know the history of the genre. The very fact that he used ska as a synonym for punk says a lot.

But yes, how astute of you to see that I want my knowledge to remain secret. (Why the hell would I post on ILM if I wished that?)

oops (Oops), Monday, 3 March 2003 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i didn't give a recommendation initially because I assumed you meant punk or punk-ska, and I'm not familiar enough w/these styles to recommend anything.
However, if you wish to listen to some early ska, Prince Buster is great, as are the Skatalites, who invented the genre. (Just got a Don Drummond--Skatalites virtuoso tromobonist--'best of' comp. in the mail)

oops (Oops), Monday, 3 March 2003 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:37 (twenty-three years ago)

nine years pass...

Are there any punk bands about being old? Like, they only wear grandpa clothes and sing about missing social security checks and medical problems. Punk is such a youth-oriented thing, it would be fun to just rattle off on how the young are wasting their lives, we had it harder, "get off my lawn, kids!" sort of stuff.

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 2 February 2013 23:11 (thirteen years ago)

They think we're full of sh*te,
But we are the Dads,
And the Dads are alright!"

LOL

Like what if during the show instead of swigging from a bottle of whiskey you have one of those by-the-day drug dispensers.
