Pump up the volume

I went looking for this in the video store today but couldnt find it so I ended up renting "Faster Pussycat kill kill" instead. It's years since I last watched it and I remember that I liked it a lot but all I can recall about it was the great "alternative-rock" pre-Nirvana soundtrack on it (Bad Brains,Pixies, Minutemen).

It was just on TV on a Saturday this past June, and, despite myself, I watched the whole damn thing. (Krush Groove had preceeded it...introduced by Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis as part of Paramounts "African American Heritage" series...although I dunno if The Fat Boys are something for any race to be proud of.)

One of my favorite movies. Not only for the soundtrack and a nubile fuck you Christan Slater but for the message. It is the internet Be The Media !

Also Sonic Youth, and that highly addictive Above The Law song, and Eat-Me Beat-Me Lady Samantha Mathis with her terrible poetry *swoon*

Anyone remember the trailer with an alternate version of 'Wave of Mutilation'? First airplay for the Pixies at the local metroplex!

any movie named after a rakim quote can't be all bad, especially if princess toadstool from the mario brothers movie is in it. it's a bit simplistic during, um, well, almost all the movie, but it has it's little movie heart in the right place.

The movie that inspired me to be a DJ and beat off on the air. Wait, I was already doing that.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's very, very good. Better than Heathers? But somewhat spoiled by that stupid good-guys-win-and the-evil-cheating-principal-gets-her-comeuppance plot structure being imposed upon it.

Nick, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

up there with Ferris Buellers for me, the funny version of wave of Mutilation is the "uk surf mix", which slots in nicely as he walks along the street reading the papers and the enormity of his actions sink in.

Samantha Mathis = rowr despite admittedly awful poetry

"Better than Heathers"!???????

dave q, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I'd say better than Heathers, if only for the fact that I can watch PUTV over and over whereas I've only ever watched Heathers a couple of times and I've got no urge to watch it again.

And Nick, the good guys don't win, they get carted off to gaol. Unless you mean the slightly wussy teacher with the Luis Chavez obsession.

cabbage, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only raised it as a possibility. Less funny but more moving re: teenage angst. While we're on the topic of odious comparisons, I can't believe Ned mentioned it in the same breath as 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'. 'Pump Up The Volume' and 'Heathers' are the anti-John Hughes.

Nick, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick, that was me. They are two of my favourite teen films despite, perhaps even because, they come from opposite sides of the spectrum. Hughes focuses on success and aspiration so much whereas PUTV seems to wallow more in it's bleak view, and the victory garnered by the kids is merely to talk about how miserable/lonely they are, something that would never happen in a film by John Hughes film. Besides John Hughes is good with soundtracks, but not that good.

Hmm this has become a little incoherent but what I'm trying to get across is that yes they are the anti-Hughes but they are still teen films and surely Hughes is the prime reference in teen films?

Cabbage, I think you have a more mature attitude to the whole thing than I do. For me, the brat-pack movie wars are not yet over.

Nick, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Screwballs' is the best teen film

dave q, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

awww Dave, you say the funniest things

Nick, congratulations you are perhaps the first person who has ever referred to me as having a mature attitude, and for that, I thank you.

hugely fuckable slater, rocking soundtrack though could never figure out why they used the concrete blond on the cd rather than the leonards, not that i minded, and yeah, great msg in the medium.

Geoff, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

three months pass...
I have a question. Is there an alternate version of Concrete Blondes Everybody Knows as performed by Leonard Cohen? Please tell me yes, or you could lie to me... but that's hardly the point. Ah, yes. A fine film, all around. Better than Heathers, yes. Wathc each of them 10x and tally the number of times you scream obscen...obsceni...foul words at the Heathers for their shallow behaivor. I won't apologise for being simple. Any leads on the Cohen query would make my evening, thank you.

Stinky Pete, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That would be "Wienerschnitzel" by the Adolescents, I believe.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is there an alternate version of Concrete Blondes Everybody Knows as performed by Leonard Cohen?

[Gasps in mock horror] Surely you mean Leonard Cohen's "Everybody Knows" as performed by Concrete Blonde? Live version is on the above mentioned album, studio on I'm Your Man.
