Come fly with me!

I’ve just found out that I have to fly to York tomorrow. This flight will be the tenth I’ve taken this year – I’ve already taken nine flights and it’s only the 4th March!

Am I the most jet-set ILXer? Do trips to London, Glasgow, Edinburgh and York count as jet-set??

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:07 (twenty-three years ago)

does York actually have an airport?

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooops - I'll be flying to Leeds and then driven to York.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Incidentally, does anyone live in York and fancy introducing me to a fancy restaurant that I'll be happy to buy them an early dinner in?

(flight times and work permitting)

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:16 (twenty-three years ago)

I last went in an aeroplane in 1994.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:17 (twenty-three years ago)

But do you live in York??

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

TCM3M to thread!

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I live in hope.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I live nearby in constant expectation of something better.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

you are very jetset. I am going to Nottingham for the weekend, not quite so exciting, though I will be at a Track & Field night on friday.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

yes, v. jetset. It is very rare for me to make more than one return trip by plane per year. In fact, I think it's only happened in 2001. Maybe one day I will get a job which involves a lot of travel.

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

This is only the second work trip I’ve taken this year. Last year I only took about four.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Oxford has an airport. I used to work next door to it!

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

York is a bit shabby these days. You can't beat the egg sandwiches in Bettys though (even though they're about £18 and you have to sit next to squawking tourists)

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only ever been on a plane once, Manchester to London. I missed the return flight.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

The year I was living in Italy I manage 23 flights. I've not flown anywhere since last easter though.

I live quite close to york.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

last year i went to heathrow, tegel, dulles, koln-bonn and jfk

this year i shall fly to more, i shall be at jfk again very soon:)

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I think if I could fly to the shops I would.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

look its Lara in the sky! no diamonds though

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I took 21 flights last year, which is a bit environmentally monstrous. This year I have only taken two so far, and have only four more booked. (I'm taking a return to mean two flights here, btw, as I think Lara was). Anyway, I'm trying to cut down.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

21 flights!!??

where to?

and this year?

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Planes. I'm not a fan.

They're just giant germ factories with wings that age you a year or so with every flight.

However, they are sometimes necessary to get you where you need to go.

I do try to limit it, though. I think six times is my personal record.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Mainly UK and Ireland, gareth. One to Italy.

This year: Bournemouth last month and Bristol and Spain this.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Environmentally and financially monstrous. And Nick, you've taken four flights this year so far!! I think I took somewhere in the region of 40 flights last year, I vaguely remember totting them up after a chat we had.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yeah - I forgot. I went to London too. Still, I'm not going to do 21 this year. The question is, will it be an even number?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The world waits with baited breath, I'm sure.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I reckon I'm well on traget to break to break last year's record and this delights me!

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Baited breath is a disgusting thought.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:51 (twenty-three years ago)

If so, it is payback for reviving talk of disgusting beards.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't sodding revive it.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

You did: by shaving it off and then letting it grow again.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't ask people on ILE to comment on it.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Is your beard scratchy and making you irritable?

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

The facial fur is posessed!

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it is. Now fuck off.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:02 (twenty-three years ago)

That was kind of in response to Lara's post, where it would have looked less serious.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

And you are more attuned to being unkind to me.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually on a major point of order, I beg the distinction: you didn’t ask people to comment on it on ILE rather than didn’t ask people on ILE to comment on it. Tsk.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I had never set foot on a plane until 2001.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

There was a lot more punctuation required in order for my last post to have made sense but I've run out of apostrophes.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Between 1997 and 2000 I flew to the USA on average 10 times a year, plus 2 trips to Japan a year, and lots of European travel. I reckon I was doing 30+ flights a yr, most long haul. It was shit, but lucrative. I lost touch with everything good in those years. I was a different person.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hardly fly now, which is much better. However - there is possibility (on again, off again, on again...)of a Concorde flight to NYC sometime in the next month or so and I'm incandescent with excitement!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

my arms get tired

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:07 (twenty-three years ago)

They're just giant germ factories with wings that age you a year or so with every flight.

Meaning I'm now...*calculates*...hm, I should be on the verge of death. This is distressing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, being kind of claustrophobic planes make me a little uncomfortable to begin with. But to think that you have to breathe everyone's germs in as they get recirculated and recirculated is really off-putting.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:22 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, it's one of those things I figure is the risk run, alas. *coughs* Haven't gotten truly sick from anything via a plane yet, though.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

I once lkeft my cough medecine on a plane and became ill as a result. I don't think this was the connesction you were looking for though.

The one thing I hate about planes is what it does to my skin.

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

flights this year:

Des Moines -> Chicago -> London
London -> Paris
Milan -> London -> Stockholm
Stockholm -> London
London -> Chicago -> Des Moines
Des Moines -> Dallas -> Ontario, CA
Ontario, CA -> Dallas -> Des Moines (last night)

yep you win

the air inside the cabin is total hell on my singing voice, it makes me so angry

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:59 (twenty-three years ago)

You shouldn't be singing on the plane anyway.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

N. in your last year flights you forgot india, or did you really get the tube all the way from archway?

this year i have been to brussels and back and will also be flying up to glasgow in may, this will equal the total number of flights i have been on in my entire life...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought this thread was about Sinatra:(

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 07:18 (twenty-three years ago)

We could make it so!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

"That's life, that's what they say..."

NB: though The Good Thief is a really good film, it does have Bono singing this song on the soundtrack. But also lots of Leonard Cohen (do not watch if you hate Leonard Cohen)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 10:12 (twenty-three years ago)

People hate Leonard Cohen??

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

That's like hating James Taylor!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 10:59 (twenty-three years ago)

exactly

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The backlash starts here, huh?

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

backlash?

surely they are both guitar playing jokes?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

shouldn't you be on a plane?

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm leaving in about an hour.

Does Leonard Cohen play guitar? I like both for pretty much the same reason - they help me sleep (in a musical way).

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:11 (twenty-three years ago)

I can see how they might make one sleep.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, the India thing.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Lara, you should answer my thread about the song on ILM.

the pinefox, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

I shall have a goo and see if the muse takes me.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Kerriste, I am *still* waiting for my taxi. I am going to the Blue Bicycle (La Bicyclette Bleu - har har) for dinner if anyone wants to pop in, keep me company and share a bottle of wine!

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 12:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Car here. *dash* *dash*

I want to stay on and play though. Today is fun. Grumble grumble.

Lara (Lara), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Let's go fly a kite. Up to the highest heights.. .Come, let's go fly a kite.

It's so pretty out! Hurrah!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Wasn't this the title of the first ever concept album, by Frank Sinatra?

Anyway, I've not been outside the M25 in about two years, and I'm unlikely to change that any time soon.
