I'm going to a pancake party tonight, and have to turn up with a topping of my choice, something preferably outside the oppressive rockist pancake topping canon (you know, maple syrup and the like).

What do you people recommend?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Whipped cream and fried apples.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Tabasco.

hstencil, Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

A dark rum sauce.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Chocolate

Sarah Hotnights (coco), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Raspberries!

Although I did know someone who liked to put whipped cream and ham on pancakes. Although it's not rockist, it looked revolting and I could not in good conscience recommend it.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Real maple syrup, which is totally different from the maple-flavored stuff (fine, still canonical).

Cane syrup.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

(loads of) sugar and lemon.

cream cheese + smoked salmon.

toby (tsg20), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

2 tablespoons dark rum
2 tablespoons of honey
1 teaspoon of ground cinammon
mix.
top with a scoop of ice cream.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Strawberries, tequila, and sugar, cooked together until the berries have softened and the sugar and tequila have become syrupy.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

My mentalist college flatmate converted me to the joys of topping pancakes with malt vinegar and sugar.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

equal parts honey and butter melted together, yum.

Also when I was in Hawaii I was introduced to coconut syrup and loved it! I'm guessing you just put some powdered sugar in coconut milk and heat it up.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh. I want to know more about the malt vinegar and sugar. Just sprinkled on separately, or mixed together first, or ... ?

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

MY GUTS ARE SHRIEKING FOR PANCAKES!!!!!!!!NUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I put about 3 tablespoons of sugar on mine.

Bonus question, what is a Shrove?

Shrove Tuesday is the Tuesday following Quinguagesima Sunday, and preceding the first day of Lent, or Ash Wednesday.

It was formerly customary in England, on this day, for the people to confess their sins to their parish priests, after which they dined on pancakes, or fritters, and the occasion became one of merriment. The bell rung on this day is popularly called Pancake Bell, and the day itself Pancake Tuesday.

I am without sin, so therefore should need no pancakes. Ring thine own pancake bell.

But yes, I am intrigued by anything featuring dark rum.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

more pancakes

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Use a lot of dulce de leche!

Also, I once had Thanksgiving dinner-style pancakes that were amazing: pancakes stuffed with turkey and stuffing, and topped with an awesome cranberry-filled syrup. My mouth's watering just thinking about them...

die9o (dhadis), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Bananas, rum, brown sugar in a frying pan. Flambe. Pour on pancakes.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

See, thats where I got the recipe for the rum sauce. Grilled banana's with a rum sauce, but i tried it on pancakes and it was fantastic.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

brown sugar and butter.

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Condensed milk. Revoltingly sticky and gorgeous.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

mmmmm, maple syrup, its almost worth going to the forests to watch them tap the trees in spring.
Brown sugar, coco powder, water and I forget what else (butter thanks anthony), boil it down to a syrupy level and pour ontop of pancakes that have been loaded up with chocolate chips.

Alternatively cook some susages, breakfast ones are best but bangers will do in a pinch and wrap your pancakes around them (use a toothpick if your feeling fanc y) and douse with liberal amounts of maple syrup. mmm piggies in a blanket.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

chocolate waffles (melt in dark chocolate choc. chips into the batter) topped with mint chocolate chip ice cream, its pretty and feeds the chocolate fiend within

Now we're talking. :-)

search: cream! butter! sugar! Lemon! nutella!

(not necessarily all on the same pancakes)

destroy: savoury pancakes. They are UNNATURAL AND WRONG.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

AFAIK all we have is lemon and sugar and I'm even running out of Nutella - nutella and banana = a grebt combo.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Malt vinegar = more or less the same stuff as lemon juice and a pancake related taste sensation, lemon lovers.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

malt vinegar! that's just MAD.

I don't really like banana on pancakes, because it violates my fruitwa.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

blackcurrant

Minky Starshine (Minky Starshine), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

But isn't Pancake Tuesday next week?

Minky Starshine (Minky Starshine), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

nope! it's today!

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

But it precedes the first day of Lent. And that, iirc, precedes Easter Sunday (mmm...choccy eggs..) by 40 days. Easter Sunday is April 20 this year so Pancake Tuesday should be next week, no?

Minky Starshine (Minky Starshine), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The signs in Tesco say March 4, and like, they'd know.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless it's a ploy to sell more lemon juice and batter?
Next week, they have signs saying "Opps, our bad, buy more flat stuff"..
:)
Hmm, on reflection, maybe I should just bow to the wisdom of Tesco and make some pancakes tonight. Doh!

I wonder what Sainsbury's say?

Minky Starshine (Minky Starshine), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't include Sundays in the 40 days!

http://www.kencollins.com/holy-04.htm

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Mad - I never knew that. As a kid, I always thought it was only irreligious wusses chickening out of the hard slog of lent that add sweets etc. on Sundays. Of course, in Ireland, St. Paddy's Day was always a day off from the Lenten sacrifice anyway - killing our prepubescent brain cells drinking cider in parking lots after watching crappy parades...

Anyway, enough religion, back to orgies and chickpea sacrificing! (I'm a a vegetarian so set those chickens free!)

Minky Starshine (Minky Starshine), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Cabdury's drinking chocolate
Destroy: Chocolate spread

No lemon juice in this house, but there were some maky lemons laying about. I couldn't remember what to do with the sugar - Do you put it on before or after you've rolled it up?

The Aunt Bessie's things were to pancakes what Chicago Town mini-pizzas are to pizza. They're like 50% of real pancakes.

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

golden syrup, jif lemon and sugar, numnumnum

nutella also tops. i didn't know that about not counting sundays in the 40 days (i'm entirely non-religious, but my BRANE needs to know things like this).

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Poor Kate I forgot there was golden syrup in the top cupboard. Instead made the Pooh cakes with a puree of pineapple, blood orange juice, and brown sugar as these were the only things in the house I thought to add.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 4 March 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

cordelia, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Pancakes with butter and Vegemite are quite yumlicious, specially when you have a hangover. OK, everyone can throw things at me now.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 02:05 (twenty-two years ago)

savoury pancakes are also important: try mushrooms and cream cheese. as for sweet, heapsa fruit and anykinda icecream with some chocolate sauce. i stole all these ideas from planet pancake anyway.

Favorite thing: just good quality butter, then roll it up and eat like a soft taco.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

Well I've just had mine, bloody excellent. Alternating lemon & sugar with maple syrup.

snoball, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 18:22 (seventeen years ago)

Pancake soirée tonight, 2 hours to go... I'm dangerously hungry already. I'm hoping there's maple syrup in abundance. Bananas also sounds like a good idea.

krakow, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 18:47 (seventeen years ago)

As I'm in work 'til 8, we're forgoing Pancake Day until tomorrow, when we can introduce them to the boy. I think he'll love 'em.

Rob M v2, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 18:52 (seventeen years ago)

gotta be maple syrup.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

THE REAL SHIT.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

I like real fruit, or a nice fruit jam, on pancakes. I also am a fan of the now-mostly-forgotten buckwheat pancake. I make them with buttermilk. Real maple syrup is nice, but even Grade B syrup is too expensive for my blood. My delicacies must be cheap ones.

Aimless, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

I used to like Golden Syrup, but it's too sweet for me now.

snoball, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

that's what she said

s1ocki, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:07 (seventeen years ago)

I had some at my nan's house with golden syrup. She does 'em perfect.

HAPPY PANCAKES DAY

Bodrick III, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 19:09 (seventeen years ago)

I made pancakes in our new house for the first time. It was ace. Emma was rockist with lemon and sugar. I had two with golden sizzurp, one with lemon curd, and one with bramble jelly.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 21:13 (seventeen years ago)

what is this golden syrup all about? it's just hopped-up corn syrup, right?

s1ocki, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 21:24 (seventeen years ago)

No, it's cane syrup, not corn syrup. It's good stuff.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 21:27 (seventeen years ago)

Well, the stuff I'm thinking about, anyway.

recipe plz

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

Golden syrup in the UK usually means Lyle's Golden Syrup. It's one step in the process of turning sugar cane into white sugar.

snoball, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

i am suspicious of it

s1ocki, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

I just had 1.5 x lemon & sugar and 2x banana, maple syrup and white chocolate chips pancakes (white chocolate was a pleasant surprise addition after I found an open packet behind a tub of stock powder). Feel bad forsaking the awesome cherry pie filling + squirty cream combo, though.

Not the real Village People, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

gabbneb, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

my pancakes >>>>>>>>> your blandcakes

We finished off a good plate of 15 or so blandcakes and they were de-li-cious thanks. I mean, ffs, once you've poured maple syrup or choco sauce or bananas and honey over the things ain't nobody gonna know if you've separated the egg whites first.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

NOTE that i have not tried this recipe but eagerly anticipate it:

3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup brewed coffee, cold or at room temperature
4 large eggs
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
Vegetable oil for brushing griddle

Whisk together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices in a bowl. Whisk together water, coffee, eggs, butter, and lemon juice in a large bowl. Add flour mixture and whisk until just combined. Let stand 15 minutes (batter will thicken).

Brush a griddle or 12-inch nonstick skillet with oil and heat over moderate heat until hot but not smoking.

Working in batches of 3 or 4, pour 1/4 cup batter per pancake onto hot griddle and cook until bubbles appear on surface and undersides are lightly browned, 1 to 2 minutes. Flip pancakes with a spatula and cook until cooked through and edges are lightly browned, 1 to 2 minutes more. Transfer to a platter and loosely cover with foil to keep warm. Brush griddle with oil between batches.

(last bit is obvo)

This German Baked Pancake is fantastic.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

That's from personal experience, not "I bet it would be fantastic."

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 00:11 (seventeen years ago)

wouldn't a baked pancake be just a... cake?

s1ocki, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 05:20 (seventeen years ago)

I guess, but after it comes out of the oven and falls as it cools, it's just a big pancake.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 05:35 (seventeen years ago)

Pancakes were good. Enjoyed with the old-school lemon and sugar topping and, as hoped for, very nice quality Canadian maple syrup.

The over-cooked chocolate cake with the squigy centre and the chewy, nigh on rock-hard in parts, outside casing was surprisingly addictive too.

As per new year, I'm giving up smoking for lent.

I went with the very conservative maple syrup and lemon juice/sugar choices last night. Although, we've got a jar of preserved cherries in the fridge, so I did consider blitzing some of those up with a bit of orange juice.

We found a good batter recipe this year: it uses melted butter for some of the liquid. Then you don't need any oil in your pan.
