Help make my popcorn more exciting

I've been obsessed w/ making popcorn the past few weeks and need new ways to go about it. What extra stuff should I sprinkle, sift, shake, pour, melt, whatever to make popcorn more swoon-worthy than it already is?

Side-question: Does blueberry-infused olive oil sound intriguing or disgusting? I can't tell, and don't have the berries to try.

Andy, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 04:42 (twenty-three years ago)

grated cheese

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 04:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Have you tried the microwave kettle corn? Mmmmmm.

(PS I vote disgusting. But then I don't like blueberries.)

rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 04:45 (twenty-three years ago)

I had popcorn tossed in extra-virgin olive oil a few weeks back, it was suprisingly delicious. Then again, I was drunk and had the munchies, so maybe my own socks would have tasted good.

Popcorn with cheese though.... dammit, now I'm hungry *whine*.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 04:46 (twenty-three years ago)

tabasco sauce. seriously! it's good.

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 04:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Popcorn with extra virgin olive oil and freshly grated parmesan. THAT would be tasty.

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 04:53 (twenty-three years ago)

brewers yeast

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I use olive oil cuz it's the only kind I have (self-cook activity being almost entirely limited to popcorn). Cheese on popcorn kind of freaks me out for some reason, but tobasco sounds promising.

Andy, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

corn syrup and Nerds candy

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 04:58 (twenty-three years ago)

second the tabascoe, also chili powder, a little curry powder or cinnamon.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 05:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Garlic butter ... yummmmmm.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 05:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Cinnamon on popcorn sounds awful.

But soy sauce = salty soy goodness. I've been doing that since I was little.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 05:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Soy sauce popcorn does sound better, but I love cinnamon coffee so Im a freak. I wonder if a little HP would work at all.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 05:09 (twenty-three years ago)

It might - I've put HP on plain potato chips before. It gets sticky but tastes pretty good.

Kim (Kim), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 05:11 (twenty-three years ago)

use it as a dip, works pretty good.
Careful, there ruffled!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 05:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Is HP the English brown sauce I saw down the NYC fish-and-chippery the other day?

And good mix of savory and sweet so far....

Andy, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 05:23 (twenty-three years ago)

HP is a brown sauce, couldnt tell you if it was the same.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 05:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Butter + Garlic Salt.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 05:26 (twenty-three years ago)

My favorites: Tabasco sauce. Soy sauce. Parmesan cheese + Italian-type seasonings. Brewer's yeast, sure. These have all been said, I guess, but I want to second them. I keep wanting to do some sort of Indian mango pickle topping but I haven't figured out how to make that work yet.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 06:01 (twenty-three years ago)

You should get a microwave.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 08:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The hard end of the parmesan wedge before you bin it is good to grate on popcorn. Use ghee instead of oil or butter, no burning. Sometimes to make the popcorn more Indian I put a pinch of turmeric/haldi in the ghee to yellow it and a few cardamom seeds (one or two pods dismantled) also thrown in the ghee. Also smoked paprika LIGHTLY dusted on popped corn is amazing.

I only do savoury popcorn. I was the kid who bought crackerjack for the prizes.

Salt & vinegar powder from Kernels!

elisabeth k, Wednesday, 5 March 2003 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

caramel, but too much=too sweet, just drizzle it on. For your salty side, maybe this is just a freakish me thing, but sprinkle on about half of the seasoning packet out of the ramen noodles.

divya noguchi (divya), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Bryan (Bryan), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 16:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Have you considered.... nacho cheese?

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

EURGH. Not after that thread.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Wednesday, 5 March 2003 20:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Theres a brand of microwave popcorn here thats really tasty - they always had a plain and a "butter" flavour (butter flavoured MSG more like it probably) - theyve just introduced some other wack flavours, like salt and vinegar and maybe chicken or something, I suspect. Like chip flavours. Blergh. I daren't try them.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 6 March 2003 01:02 (twenty-three years ago)

I eat popcorn nearly every day. Three words: red pepper flakes.

That Girl (thatgirl), Thursday, 6 March 2003 08:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 June 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

popcorn is pretty damn exciting when you cant find it anywhere in the grocery store. i was walking around for 15 minutes yesterday and i couldnt find any. the closest food to popcorn i found was poppycock " or something. what the hell is that btw? i realized i was wasting my life looking for the stuff & headed to the self checkout, where the machine kept on rejecting the food i had picked out, so i basically left witout paying for a couple items (i though i had payed for them) . i remember walking to my car thinking"wow" not bad for 10bucks, i realized this morning a bunch of it was free.
i dont even eat popcorn.

kephm, Monday, 9 June 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to make popcorn at a movie theatre. industrial size cans of fake butter/oil=uber gross.
not a bad gig for a 16yo me though. a total serial killer job

kephm, Monday, 9 June 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Easy. Cut a hole in the bottom of a popcorn jug and stick your penis through it. Next time you're at the cinema, place jug on lap and ask various patrons, "Who wants a handfull?"

Lara (Lara), Monday, 9 June 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

The only way to make popcorn exciting is to throw it away and buy pistachios instead.

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I just hope this is the only popcorn thread, and that Nordic didn't choose the "exciting" one over "classic or dud," "TS: Jiffy Pop vs microwave popcorn," and "I think my popcorn may be a bit of a liar," to post his piss-infused popcorn to.

i'm still obsessed with making popcorn salad! here's my ingredients so far:

popcorn
salt
crumbled feta or goat cheese
strawberries or blueberries
a drizzle of olive oil

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 9 April 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

isn't that stretching the definition of "salad"? wait - what is the definition of salad?

Kim (Kim), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

EXACTLY

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 9 April 2004 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a great popcorn salad recently with I think just popcorn and frisee in kalamata olive vinaigrette. A nice oily dressing is key in order to keep the popcorn from wilting into slime.

Paul Eater (eater), Friday, 9 April 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

AHA that's what i thought!

(i'm sad i'm not the first though)

yeah

dean! (deangulberry), Friday, 9 April 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

You can use it for stuffing, too, slutsky! (You wouldn't be the first for that, either, though. You could be the first to use popcorn as filler for meatballs or crabcakes, probably. Or I wonder, could you grind the popped popcorn up and use it to bread chicken or fish? You could certainly try. There are firsts remaining.)

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a recipe for popcorn salad involving popcorn and mayonnaise, I will look it up for you, slocki.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I grew up putting yeast and tamari on popcorn, and find this combination unbeatable (especially when served in a big wooden bowl).

morris pavilion (samjeff), Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

mayonnaise?!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

is it in the big book of goyishe cuisine?

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! got it right way upthread. Brewer's yeast is so great. No salt or artery cloggers. An aquired tast for sure, but one that I quickly picked up. Hell, if you air-pop it, you can eat it for centuries.

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 10 April 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Worst Salad of the Twenties

1 Banana
Lettuce Leaf
Popcorn
Mayonnaise

Place the banana on the lettuce leaf. Scatter popcorn over the banana and put dabs of mayonnaise here and there.

(from Sylvia Lovegren's Fashionable Food)

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Sunday, 11 April 2004 00:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Even I'm skeptical of that!

(By "with mayonnaise," I figured it was like "popcorn salad" the way chicken + mayo + stuff is "chicken salad." DABS?)

(I'm also imagining a restaurant getting away with that now by calling the dabs of mayo "egg coulis.")
