I like May Day and find it interesting *precisely because* it has so
much left-wing history yet its cultural signifiers have often been
misappropriated by the political right: I would not see that as
reason to give up on it. Some years ago (1993, I think) it had to be
explained to me that it had socialist resonances when I asked why the
Tories wanted to abolish it (their idea was to scrap it in favour of
a new - shudder - "Trafalgar Day" Bank Holiday in the autumn: it was
also a means of the Tories showing their anti-European streak because
virtually every EU country has May Day as a holiday, but they had
other piffling little issues such as a dwindling majority and
complete civil war within the party to deal with so thankfully it
never came about).
