WILL Young claims record bosses have told him not to mention he is gay if he wants to crack the US.

He has also been told to have his teeth straightened and whitened before he takes on America.

The singer says he may now turn down the lucrative deal.

He told The Sun: "I've been offered a major deal but I'm in a dilemma.

"They want me to keep quiet about my private life and, worse, they've told me to get my teeth straightened.

"I thought they were joking but that is the bottom line."

how many americans here have heard of will young?

I don't think he would do anything in america whether they knew or not--he is no better than a whole bunch of singers that sell over there already.

he'd have to have a really great song, or something, but, if someone had a really great song, why would they give it to will young?

I think he'd be better just to stay in the UK with crooked, discoloured teeth and not release any more records and do something else.

Most Americans think that brits are all gay with bad teeth anyway. He should really play it up.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 6 March 2003 16:49 (twenty-three years ago)

"Tatu told not to mention they're gay to US."

Nick A. (Nick A.), Thursday, 6 March 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

"tAtU told not to mention they're not gay to UK."

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 6 March 2003 16:52 (twenty-three years ago)

What??? Tatu are gay???? Yuck!

Hey, Ricky Martin dances all gay-like and he got popular in the US.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:06 (twenty-three years ago)

They told Boy George to say the same thing, but never you fear, we weren't fooled! Those weren't his teeth! What?...oh...I see...uh...

Skottie, Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:11 (twenty-three years ago)

This is completely baffling: "They want me to keep quiet about my private life and, WORSE, they've told me to get my teeth straightened."

Does this mean our insistence on dental hygiene is somehow more terrible than our homophobia, or that he prizes his crooked teeth more than the freedom to be truthful about his sexual orientation?

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose he thinks: not disclosing something at the moment so as to not exclude homophobes from his fanbase < permanent physical alteration.

and straighter != more hygienic.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:17 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe he justs expects bullshit homophobia and it doesnt impact him as much as being told to have surgery.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

NB I still think this stinks. I keep thinking we have moved past this, at least in the realm of pop music, which is not to say that things are perfect or even ideal, but i thought it was better than this.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:24 (twenty-three years ago)

AMERICANS, WILL YOUNG IS GAY

There, I've saved him the moral dilemma.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe he realises that if you have your teeth straightened and whitened you look like a total scary freak by the time you hit 50 and everything else is showing the signs of age but not your teeth.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Who's Will Young? And is he gay?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe he realized he sounds like a duck fucking Mick Hucknall and is desperately looking for something to hide behind.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

HIS NAME IS WILL YOUNG!

AND HE IS GAY!!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Has Gareth been asked not to mention his stutter?

*runs away laughing*

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

AND HE SOUNDS LIKE THIS!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 6 March 2003 17:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Argh! I'm at work!!!

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 6 March 2003 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Tom, with today's surgical technology -- not to mention tomorrow's -- there is no good reason for "everything else to show the signs of age!" We Americans have expectations of our celebrities: Look Nice Now and Forevermore or At Least Right Up Until We Start Making Fun of You for Being Ugly.

Anyway, umm, I think my point is something like: how you look is a time-tested aspect of pop-star success, so it doesn't seem surprising to me for a label to comment on the teeth. (No more than dieting or hair styling or whatever else.) The opening up of the celebrity realm to homosexuals has come well before the opening up of the celebrity realm to unattractive people!

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 6 March 2003 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There may not be any good reason but too too often have I turned on the TV and seen some leathery old dog open his mouth to suddenly show a set of gnashers which look like they've been photoshopped on.

I think the "and worse" thing is a joke btw.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 6 March 2003 18:03 (twenty-three years ago)

I only know who is because of ILM. No one in my office even knew their was a Poopstars contest in the UK.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 6 March 2003 18:10 (twenty-three years ago)

a duck fucking Mick Hucknall

I want to read this as 'a fuck ducking Mick Hucknall' or 'a Huck duckfucking Muck Fucknuts.'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Wanting our popstars to be as good looking as possible is hardly new. The gay thing is horrible, but hardly surprising, and I dare say keeping it quiet would help his (slim) chances of US stardom.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 6 March 2003 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

My substitution didn't impress Dan and I am sad. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 6 March 2003 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

ned i find your comment surprisingly hilarious and have been chuckling all this time. so dont worry

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 6 March 2003 22:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, I was off drinking scotch with coworkers. Now I must go drink beer with coworkers, but I have this to say:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
