What should be the 8th Deadly Sin?

I would personally choose 'Idealism' as it's the variety of denial-of-reality with the most unintended consequences

Tampering with the 7 deadly sins.

Ronan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think 'malice' is covered by any of the others, is it? I mean being a nasty vindictive little shit doesn't have to be accompanied by wrath. Maybe in those cases there's a simmering internalised anger against the world there. I don't know.

Nick, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, I think that comes under 'pride'

Nick, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How about "Pendantary"?

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes well I was hardly suggesting we'd add an 8th one that made tampering with the existing 7 a sin. Leave the sins alone ok?

Ronan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pessimism.

Trevor, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Or failing that, iconoclasm. Everyone's got to believe in something, right?

Trevor, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pendantary = wearing medallions in discos?

mark s, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You can be iconoclastic and still believe in things. In fact if you don't you're just a vandal. Or maybe a nihilist.

Nick, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well in that case I need a new dictionary.

But I'll shift my goalposts and say Cynicism.

Trevor, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cynicism is the fifth cardinal virtue.

Given that 3 out of the seven existing 7 are irrelevant anyway, adding more seems a waste. So 'bureaucracy', perhaps.

Tom, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark: YES.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wearing open toe shoes without toenail varnish.

Emma, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What if you're Jesus?

Trevor, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have checked and she's not Jesus.

Nick, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aha! I tricked you by shaving off the beard!

It is a serious sin though. On girls anyway. It looks so ugly it makes me shudder. If you are going to buy open toe shoes buy a bottle of nail varnish, it's not expensive and makes all the difference.

Emma, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Its not as bad as doing it with smelly feet in all honesty. Some men might find unpainted toes very attractive. The fact that many of these sort of men are in prison should be no deterrent

Ronan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nail polish is silly and usually not very pretty. It's only distracting.

Maria, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

edith sitwell suggested the eigth be hyprocrisy .
i think i agree with her
however i would like to reitarate that the Second Vatican Council has moved away from this type of thinking as retrogarde
Yes i am a Catholic pendant

anthony, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What was that you were saying earlier about cardinal virtues, Tom?

I didn't even know that Cardinals had virtues.

Trevor, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah!

Pendant = medallion Pendantery = monastic workshop where medallion is made Pendantary = person of the cloth whose responsibilities involve medallion care Pendantry = the act of wearing the medallion (in disco or otherwise)

Tim, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh god. You people SCARE ME.

Isn't it better to ask why seven in the first place? Why not ten, say?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Because there were only seven. What are you suggesting? That the Catholic Church RANDOMLY MAKE UP RULES? That would be ridiculous.

Nick, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am enlightened. If only just.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

dissing ally - there are some things worse than hell.

Geoff, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd say Geoff is 100% right EXCEPT that toe nail polish thing - I really do hate that, it's not like it's hard to do a pedicure. Though I am very clumsy and stubbing my toes all day long, so my polish is always chipped.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Xenophobia.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It is Annie Lennox.

pseudocyberintellectualism - acting like you are smart on the internet when in reality you haven't got a clue.
