Is it something to be scared of?

Tom, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Only if you are too big to buy clothes in normal stores, pronounce certain words wrong and desperately hang around with the cool London set even though you are a speccy, beardy alky who lives in the sticks who has a thing about Atomic Kitten.

Pete, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mmmmmm.....Atomic Kitten.....

I would conclude then that it is not to be scared of.

Tom, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm adamant that it's not. And according to Adam Ant it's not either.

Egomaniacs and people with no social awareness tend to assume that ridicule is nothing to be scared of. Being ridiculed doesn't mean what you're doing is wrong, but it should make you question it. Worst of all is when you start assuming that ridicule is something to be proud of (see, for example, insane conspiracy theorists babbling something about Gallileo and planetary motion)

Nick, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'S a good movie too. Especially the bit when they moan that English people have no sense of humour and then fart. Priceless.

Pete, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thats the trouble with conspiracy theorists, the more they are ridiculed the more their convoluted persecution fantasies are fuelled. I may have asked before but did anyone read Jon Ronsons Adventures with Extremists book?

Ronan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What's wrong with it? I actively seek it sometimes.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, the TV show of the Jon Ronson thing was excellent too. I meanthese are the usual suspects he is dealing with and there is a degree of smugness involved but I think Ronson manages to boil it down to the smallest possible amount of knowingness and cynicism when he is with the punters.

IE He doesn't actually ridicule them, but allows them to do it themselves.

Pete, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah. In many cases he takes their side where others are ridiculing them. It's more noticeable in the book but I think this is because he doesn't know what to believe anymore after hearing a certain amount of conspiracy theory. I know even from reading some of the links on Ronsons site that your perspective is messed up a bit. It's the book of the year as far as I'm concerned, and the TV show was the last thing I thought was unmissable. You're right about the smug thing aswell, I always thought Ronson was like a less smug Louis Theroux. But then his articles in the Guardian have been good in my experience also, did you read the one about last years Big Brother people? Very good stuff, theres a link to it on his site aswell I think

Ronan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Conspiracy theorists are like regular people but with a different set of assumptions to play by. Once you're over that hurdle you can still talk to them, or at least most of them.

If by ridicule do you mean do I mind being thought unhip, out of it, whatever by what I listen to/look like/read/watch/think/whatever -- not at all, of course. I've been that way ever since I was first aware of it in early adolescence, and while I might have cared a bit then, now it's a case of either accepting me as I am or getting annoyed with me for no good reason.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Conspiracy theories are a haven for the oppressed., that doesn't mean any of them are worthy of consideration. Planning to read Ronson's book tho, I like the stuff I've read in the Guardian.

BTW Louis Theroux should rename his show 'Easy Target of the Week'

Good point.

Vibrator answers now!

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Jon Ronson is very entertaining, even if he seems to have fallen into the trap of taking some of the conspiracy theories a little too seriously. His article about David Icke and the Jews/Lizards confusion made my laugh like a deranged hyena.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick you silly shitmind. You don't ever have any posts worth reading. Why dont you go eat some sushi and jam a child up your navel? Really. Ally can also sod off.

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Never been scared of it for one moment. Wouldn't have got through these forums if I was, for a start.

Ridicule in small doses is easy to take. Ridicule is large doses is pretty toxic. Ask Jimmy Carter about that rabbit attack.

Aimless, Thursday, 19 September 2013 20:05 (eleven years ago)

Auto-completes on Google, in the order given, when you type "jimmy carter":

jimmy carter rabbit
jimmy carter library
jimmy carter quotes
jimmy carter snowden

I just learnt about this on Wikipedia's rabbit and hares portal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Carter_rabbit_incident
