or what is the most valuable thing in da house?

sadly, thinking about it, the only thing I'd really miss is this enormoous wall colour pencil drawing I made, it's 2 x 4 m. on canvas, so there won't be much time to get that loose.

then it's also the first thing that will GET fire I guess...

so I take The Complete Firbank and my Raf Simons sweater and take the run!

erik, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

My pants.

hstencil, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 07:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd grab my two cats.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

This happened to me and do you know what I grabbed first ? My fishing gear.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

My wife and I argue about this a lot. I say I'd grab my bass first, at which she calls me a monster for not grabbing her or the cat -- my response to this is that I assume that she'd have gotten the cat and split without even noticing me long before I got to my bass. At this point she generally concedes the argument.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

kittens and my rickenbacker

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

My cymbals.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

my baby blue puma rollerkitties

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

suzy, kate, laptop. in that order.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, Ed, I'm really flattered. Because here I was thinking "Guitar! No, computer! No, guitar! No, got to be computer!"

In reality I'd probably grab my sketchbooks. Because they are irreplacable in a way that a guitar isn't. And most of the really important computer files are backed up elsewhere.

kate, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 09:51 (twenty-two years ago)

PC definitely

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

pc would be the last thing i'd save! all the stuff on it is backed onto cdrs which i keep at work. and the contents insurance would pay for a new one

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

my double bass - mainly because I haven't got round to reinsuring it yet

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Me.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

because there are two parts to every person.

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Cat, hopefully the dog will follow me out, but if not I'd grab him too.

Everything else is replaceable, apart from my paintings and stuff like that.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

my punctuation exercise books.

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 11:40 (twenty-two years ago)

j0e i didnt know you had a double bass! i can certainly see you lining up in the Brian Setza Orchestra actually...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick Drake, Bryter Later. One copy, on seedee.

SittingPretty (sittingpretty), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Cats, my 12 or so completed diaries if I had time (maybe I could just throw them out the window to pick up later?)... I usually have my guitar out in my car anyway and both my big amps are at practice spaces.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I really wanted to be able to answer this, but it suddenly seems incredibly difficult. I guess it would have to be a bunch of important correspondence and photos and all that kind of stuff that is uniquely particular to me and not replaceable.

But I'm not going to think about it too much. I'm paranoid about enough things already.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

knowing me I'd try to make this decision as the flames were around me "no that, no no this, uh uh ouch ouch, computer, no no my ampeg gemini no that's fuckin heavy ow ow ow" and I'd end up with just a spatula or some dirty laundry and 3rd degree burns.

g.cannon (gcannon), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

of course as my dissertaion gets closer to completion the laptop may creep up the list. (anyone got any backup space?)

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I would take out the fire. (I'M SO CLEVER)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Assuming that my wife got out safe, my cats would have to be first.

Assuming both the wife and cats are safe, I'd grab my my old journals from high school/college, and my zip drive that contains my appelstein.com files and unfinished/unreleased songs.

mike a (mike a), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

my dog

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Honestly, I don't know. I think I'd just leave.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

It's supposed to be the backup tapes, but when it happened to me I just got dressed and bolted.

Dave Fischer, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

My cat, then photos, then records/cds, then my frogs (sorry guys, you're cheap and have little personality)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

(I hope they don't read this)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

No personality? You just don't understand our inticate frog codes.

Frog1, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Intricate, Frog 1 can't spell.

Frog2, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

In theory, my crate of vinyl (assuming that I have my wallet in a purse slung over my shoulder.

Does anyone here have one of those fireproof safes that are recommended to hold your birth certificate, passport, and similar valuables?

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I think we're all doing a damn fine job of typing with our little webbed feet.

Oops. We are your frogs. You have hurt us deeply.

Frog 3, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd have to grab the offsite backup tapes from my work, then probably my copy of the codex seraphinianus.

john fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Frog 3!?! I thought you were dead! Sorry for the toilet-flushing thing. Come home and meet the new guys

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

by the way, taking the complete firbank is cool. firbank rulz.
of course that book is still in print or at least not difficult to find.

john fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan (aka Mr. Nicole) and the cat. Aside from that, I don't really care. I can't be bothered to try to get all of my cds or vinyl, I don't think I own anything that's truly irreplaceable.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Just so long as you and Dan don't both argue over who grabs the cat.

*fears at Dan P.'s thoughts on this statement*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't need to say anything, though. YAY NED for doing my dirrty work for me!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

*bows duly* I think you should introduce yourself as Mr. Nicole just to confuse people. Or you could just say Mr. Joei, which pleases me at least to no end.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

What if only the roof, the roof, the roof is on fire???

Aaaahhh, but seriously, I've moved so many times, it's almost as though I have left a burning house. Just my ATM card.

Skottie, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I dreamt about this happening once years ago. I grabbed my leather jacket, a copy of MBV 'Isn't Anything' and a book on Rugby League.

stevo (stevo), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

codex seraphinianus , john?

firbank giggles in his grave

erik, Tuesday, 11 March 2003 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still giggling from imagining Dan being saved and carried out of his burning house by *gasp* a woman.
"Save me!! Save me!!"

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, i own a copy. it's my most prized posession, probably. at least in terms of valuable/irreplaceable.
i guess my mosrite guitar might technically be worth more, etc. but it's just a dumb guitar....

john fail (cenotaph), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

On my good days, I'd probably care enough to remove myself from the house.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe we should all pack an easily-accessed "fire crate" containing important items for rapid evacuation. (Drawback: consolidating fire crate items leaves them all vulnerable to a single falling bookshelf. If I had a penny for every gun-use survey that was lost that way...)

It would be nice if I could grab my PC, but it might take a few moments to unhook the monitor and all of the audio lines. I imagine I would grab my favorite jacket and the CDs at the end of the rack that contain most of the music I've done. (Note to self: find "Love Theme from Action Pants" and file with other music.)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I would grab my spectacles and contact lenses for practical reasons.

My guitar for sentimental reasons (my mum gave it to me)and also practical reasons, because I will never find a guitar with a sound as nice as this one ever again.

I'd throw all my diaries onto the hottest part of the blaze as I left.

rainy (rainy), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

My son, the dog and as much clean underwear as I could grab in what little time I had

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 12 March 2003 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Cell phone. Cigarettes. Car keys. I'd probably just die of smoke inhalation trying to pack as much crucial irreplaceable shit as possible into a duffel bag. Oh well.
