Chris Marker CD-Rom

Very intrigued to see how this works, since Marker's films work for me in a rather non-linear way anyway. Has anyone got it? Where can I get it?

You can get it on Amazon. You used to be able to order it through Exact Change's (http://www.exactchange.com) distributor but I don't think that's the case at the moment.

It's good, but not quite as good as I had expected (if you've seen the French version, it's exactly the same with most text translated into English).

Chris Marker is an Apple zealot (he authored much of the CD-ROM on his IIgs) so there's no way he'd approve a PC edition.

Incidentally Sans soleil and La Jetee just came out on a French DVD, with both English and French soundtrack options.

Is the version on amazon.co.uk the french version? It's £34... I got mine (English version) from amazon.fr. Once you get over the now sort of primitive-looking design (it's a few years old now after all; actually, its simplicity grew on me: means you focus more on the material), it's every bit as intriguing as the films. One of its real joys, as Ian Penman's Wire review pointed out, is that Marker writes like a dream. Given that I've never been able to get hold of any of his books, this is a delight (right now, I go to bed with Gaston Bachelard's "Poetics of Reverie" and wake up to "Immemory": a scintillating combination).

Any extras to tempt me away from my VHS copies, Amateurist?

I found a book that Marker wrote on author Jean Giraadoux (whose Choice of the Elect is now available in English translation plug plug) in the 1950s and he is a great writer (as the voice-overs on his films should attest). Based on the evidence on the CD-ROM, he's a wonderful still photographer as well.

The CD-ROM's best feature: a few ravishing frames of Simone Genevois in La Merveilleuse vie de Jeanne d'Arc.

I heard a strange claim re La Jeteé, that Chris Marker preferred the English-dubbed version. Has anyone else heard this?

No One (SiggyBaby), Tuesday, 11 March 2003 20:28 (twenty-three years ago)

He prefers that English-speaking audiences hear the English version (which was prepared by Marker, who speaks English fluently) rather than read subtitles. I've also seen Letter from Siberia, Grin without a Cat (a.k.a. La fond de l'air est rouge), and Sans soleil with wonderful English narration.

Did "Level 5" ever get a VHS/DVD release, does anyone know?

Interesting. I’ve only seen La Jetee and San Soleil in French, mais je parle tres bien. This explains why the previous Region 1 DVD that contained La Jetee only had an English soundrack.

Excellent!
