Robert Downey Jr. as 'Elton John' in New Video: Classic or "Weapon of Choice" Ripoff?

it's so serious looking that it almost makes me want to call it a dud. and yet, it's also quite creepy, particularly since it doesn't really sound like elton john singing. perhaps he did that purposely with this exact concept in mind...no, that'd be far too diabloical. wouldn't it?

fred solinger, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What? This is quite possibly the best thing I've ever read in my entire life.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As in an Elton John video promoting an Elton John song? You are going to provide a link or more besides, I trust.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

HE BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love Robert Downey, Jr., he's even cooler than Judd Nelson.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

l ink here.

the video is now in rotation on mtv, as i saw it last night. robert downey jr. walks around this lush apartment, looking pensive, lip- synching to elton john.

fred solinger, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not since George Michael cast all those models in "Freedom '90" has something so engagingly celebrity-factor weird happened in videos, I think.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fucking hell, yo. Why can't I see cool ass shit like that instead of that damned Ben Folds Five video? Oh, because my friends are crap and turn off good shit like that. Does he play Julian from Less Than Zero, or does he play his character from Back to School? Or is it some sort of godlike combination of both? I hope he doesn't play his Ally McBeal character. Maybe he could play Chaplin in the video.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's true. And it's bad.

I hope all you Downey heads saw his musical work in _Two Girls and a Guy_. He sings AND plays piano.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'downey heads'

ethan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That was Robert Downey Jr, I didn't recognise him. BTW that fatboy slim video is just crap.

jel, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Two Girls and a Guy is a disgrace to Robert Downey, Jr.'s good name and I won't stand for it even being mentioned.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Two Girls etc. was a fine show by Downey. But notice how Heather "Jugs" Graham kinda dropped off the map after that came out?

The video is creepy.

JM, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Heather Graham should be shot. What was that movie with Robert Downey Jr. and the angels called again? Remember that movie?

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that movie was okay, actually. i can't remember the name of it, something with a lame pun on 'angels' or 'heaven' in the title i bet.

ethan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Heather Graham dropping off the map = starring in Boogie Nights, Austin Powers 2, and From Hell? Riiiiight.

Movie w/ angels = Heart and Souls. Wow, that was pretty cheesy.

Weapon of Choise = perfectly fine video, until the stupid flying part. And it's up for an MTV VMA FX award. Riiiiight.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The "Weapon Of Choice" video is cute the first three times you see it. The fourth viewing induces UNHOLY VIOLENCE UPON ALL WITHIN REACH of the hapless viewer.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Austin Powers 2 has already been established by all important members of the scientific and royal community as rubbish, at least partially because of Ms. Graham's absolute lack of anything resembling charm, talent or sultriness. Robert Downey, Jr. should've chewed her head off when he still had the chance.

Anything with Robert in it is good by default, except if it has Heather Graham in it, then it becomes rubbish. Back to School is the best film ever made, but it'd be way better if it had more Robert Downey, Jr. and less of that one guy who was Rodney Dangerfield's son.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

back to school is great, it has oingo boingo in it.

ethan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oingy boingy. Who is this?

Greg, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

back to school is an all-time classick. i like it when downey played the obviously-homo super-cool high school chick magnet in films like weird science. why did anthony michael hall and the other kid feel threatened by him?

robert downey is robert downey in this video. he looks into the camera the whole time as he takes you on a tour of his palatial estate, all the whilie pining away, crying out, "i want love." in the last shot, the camera pulls away, leaving robert behind in his drug haven, with all the money and coke in the world, but no love. damn.

oh, and he also performed joni mitchell's "river" on the ally mcbeal christmas thing or other.

fred solinger, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oingo Boingo = info here, most well known these days for spawning Danny Elfman onto the world. LA area cross between XTC and Devo, in a way, sorta maybe. Gods in LA, played arenas, couldn't get arrested anywhere else. Did the theme song for Weird Science -- still known in these parts for songs like "Only a Lad," "Little Girls," "Dead Man's Party," etc.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I loved it when he came on to Mike Tyson in Black & White. He was so good in that movie. I can forgive him his Sting duets, hell, I can forgive him anything. He's the greatest.

Arthur, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave Sez: "Weapon of Choise = perfectly fine video, until the stupid flying part."

I Sez: THANK YOU. Finally someone who agrees with me... it's great until Spike Jonze runs out of ideas and has him fly.

JM, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

he was great in black and white, really. the mike tyson bit is the best part of the movie.

ethan, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Misspelling on purpose = still horrible dud.

I wish I was Robert Downey, Jr. He's awesome.

Ally, Tuesday, 4 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Robert Downey jr is a total dickface. Spoiled brat , waste of time.

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lyndon LaRouche would blow Robert Downey Jr. up with a nuclear bomb, from what I understand. He would then use the crater to start building a second Panama-style canal. The video is crazy frightening, BTW, not least for the fact that IT'S A NEW ELTON FUCKING JOHN SONG ON MTV; WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?

Kris, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i know! isn't he the licensed property of vh1 by now? i think he got some airplay on mtv for the "the way you look tonight" video because of the whole diana "thing."

fred solinger, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Like I misspell by choice. Or "choise". Sheesh.

That is odd, seeing the decidedly non-photogenic Mr. John on MTV. Of course, it's Robert Downey, Jr. they're showing. Could be nothing more than an attempt to cash in on Mr. Downey's infamy.

And Spike Jonze should stick to adapting Charlie Kaufman scripts.

I think I'd rather see Elton John in a Robert Downey Jr. Movie

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 10 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

boring

anthony, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, RDJ suddenly got really old and started morphing into George Clooney.

toraneko, Thursday, 11 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Robert Downey jr is for me, the best actor and singer, and i like very much what he does, it's my opinion. When i saw him in the clip of "i want love", i believed i was dreaming because he was so good !!

anneso, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Very blowy video that's trying to capitalize on the success of Fatboy Slim. Lip-synching is not as interesting as dancing in a hotel. Why not make Robert pretend to do drugs in his boring house or something?

palpable, Wednesday, 17 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey does anybody know if Robert Downey Jr. is singing in the video? Or is that Elton John's voice.

Courtland Alves, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ist the voice of Leonard Nimoy

Mike Hanle y, Sunday, 21 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's John singing. Don't you think Downey's lip-synching is superb, though? I mean that whole video was done in one take (the camera never leaves him and there is no visible opportunity for a cut) and he's spot-on throughout.

Shea, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pauline, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Apparently, Justin Timberlake will be playing "Young Elton" in the next video. There's a picture of him in full makeup in the most recent issue of Rolling Stone and it's FRIGHTENING. I share the horror with you all:

Dan, that's the Predator. When are you really going to post that picture?

Brian MacDonald, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That's Eddie Izzard from Velvet Goldmine, you mean.

David Raposa, Friday, 11 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's Jarvis Cocker emerged from the cesspit of Total Evil.

By the way, "The way you look tonight" is an Eric Clapton song, not Elton John. I believe you mean "Candle in the wind."

Beth, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Elton John has done The Way You Look Tonight as well.

Gale Deslongchamps, Sunday, 3 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You have to admit that R.D.J is some looker!
