What will come of this? Will there be less competition and thus less quality? Will this make DELL quake in fear? It seems like this can't be good.

Can't wait for the day when the new ueber-firm Computer offers you their latest product. "Computer, by Computer. Ask for it by name."

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone not have a computer that does everything yet? Who cares?

Kris, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kris you oaf, everyone should care! Monopolies are evil! Don't you want competition?

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, lots, but we're talking about goddamned COMPUTERS here.

Kris, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

and...? You really think all computers are created equal?

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are we talking competition FOR me or AGAINST me? Again, who cares about a bunch of fucking computers? I sold my HP stock ages ago, so I don't.

Why do we still have antitrust laws on the books, if they aren't going to be enforced?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what we used to do. But the guys were scary ex -cons whore for used to work summers child's parties? for the highway depo and that s pretyt much How about working in go to hell Graham. a zoo, as a You mustard-waif. I monkey? man

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never understood antiturst as a word. Surely that would be mistrust? Whereas our own Monopolies and Mergers Commission at least raises interest in seven year olds when it is mentioned on the news.

Pete, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't the Monopolies and Mergers Commission get renamed to the Competition Commision or something?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The word "antitrust" comes from the late nineteenth-century -- I believe that the business empires of Jay Gould, Andrew Carnegie, the Vanderbilts, Rockefeller, etc., were called "trusts." The term "antitrust" came to define the body of American federal law (codified in the Sherman and Clayton Acts) designed to protect trade and commerce from restraints, monopolies, and price-fixing. (Basically, to stop things like the proposed Compaq/HP merger.)

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I antitrust all of you.

nathalie, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

soon MAc will be bought by Volkswagen/Starbucks/Calvin Klein

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Stock in both companies plummeted shortly after the merger.

Joe Keyes, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

both companies are poorly run and this is a last ditch effort to escape extinction. last time i checked there were about 4000 computer makers and prices are plummeting, where is the threat? combined they barely will have more market share than dell. anti-trust laws are to protect consumers not just to break up large companies(which aren't very large really) and hp and compaq producing crap, overpriced computers in a shrinking market doesn't seem much to worry about. the microsoft case hasn't done much to help consumers but it did a nice job eliminating 4 trillion dollars in wealth and helped in sending the economy into a recession.

bravo for bureaucrats.

keith, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hooray for Keith!

Kris, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 6 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
