What percentage of the time do you change your mind about submitting the ILx post you just drafted?

Probably less than half of my drafted posts make it to "Submit". (The determining factor is how bold I'm feeling more than how good I think the post will be. Although the biggest category of unsent posts for me would probably be Jokes I Decide Aren't Funny.)

I feel I should make this thread-opener more clever, but if I spend too much time on it I'll probably lose my nerve and drop the whole idea. So here goes!

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 17 March 2003 06:40 (twenty-three years ago)

i reject about 5%, but i post lots of crap

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 17 March 2003 06:42 (twenty-three years ago)

haha i write HEEEPS and submit about 1 %

donna (donna), Monday, 17 March 2003 06:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to do it all the time, because I'm paranoid about being misunderstood, but I've quit censoring myself so much ever since I noticed that no one ever says "Huh?" to ANYTHING around here. We just seem to take incomprehensibility in stride.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 17 March 2003 06:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Huh?

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 17 March 2003 07:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I reject 5 or 10%, I guess. It's mostly when I can't get a joke to work satisfactorily enough to be worth posting, or when I can't phrase something right so that it's what I want to say and it's not offensive or hurtful.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 17 March 2003 12:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably 25% of the time.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 17 March 2003 13:07 (twenty-three years ago)

bout 15% for me

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 March 2003 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

it goes up and down a lot. it's quite high at the mo.

Alan (Alan), Monday, 17 March 2003 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's rather obvious I do very little self-censoring. Of course, I haven't been able to be on ILX as much lately, so I guess that's helped.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Monday, 17 March 2003 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Always. I live with a permanent sense of regret.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Monday, 17 March 2003 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I submit 99%

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 17 March 2003 13:57 (twenty-three years ago)

What does 'drafted' mean?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

20-30% of mine don't get sent, I think.

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 17 March 2003 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

As much as 50%, which cuts down my number of postings a bit. I'm very self-conscious of being an uneducated, uncultured, unfunny moron, whether I am or not.

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:40 (twenty-three years ago)

I reckon 40%, at least. Reasons they get cut include:

- attempt to be funny that doesn't work
- attempt to offer opinion seems too strident, too contrived, poorly thought-out or badly argued
- reveals too much about my (or others') personal life
- "So. Who the fuck cares what you think?"

Of course, you could quite easily argue that my stuff that gets through falls into one of these categories as well.

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:46 (twenty-three years ago)

the watchdog was understandably upset

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I censor maybe 10%. You don't want to see that 10%.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 17 March 2003 15:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Hmmm about 25-30%, either coz:

a) they are too rambling
b) I've said something that might possibly be seen as mean
c) I think "oh why bother"

jel -- (jel), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:50 (twenty-three years ago)

it varies, but i hit the back button rather than submit most of the time. which is what i feel like doing right now. i will resist. probably something like 80%

JuliaA (j_bdules), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

i wrote six drafts of this before i finally hit submit.

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably 30% or so. Usually 'cause I decide what I drafted sounded stupid or unfunny.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:22 (twenty-three years ago)

100% of the time including now.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:29 (twenty-three years ago)

i only change my mind about submitting something after i've submitted it.

di smith (lucylurex), Monday, 17 March 2003 23:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I reject roughly 25%.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan we want to see your 10% !!!

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I reject about 50% of what I've typed and then regret posting 70% of the remainder

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

i reject 99.9% of my posts. that should make people happy.

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 00:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Only ever when I see that someone's just posted what I wanted to. The result is that I post enough to stay on the Users board, but 90% of the things I post are stupid jokes. The interesting stuff, other people have covered in half the words. Damn you all and your cromulent wordage!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

About 10% of my posts never see the light of day. (At least another 50% probably shouldn't.)

Fred Nerk, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:26 (twenty-three years ago)

I ditch about 10%. Most common reasons -

- postings to advice threads which I end up thinking sound patronising or glib.
- jokes which depend on there not being a message posted inbetween, and one is.
- attacks on other posters where I want to type the words for catharsis purposes but not actually post them.
- related to above, replies to trolls/lamers where I think oh its not worth it and hit the back button.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I ditch about 5%, for much the same reasons as Tom as I am not my own man.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

uh. 5% or 25%? i forget either way.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 19 March 2003 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)
