Taking Sides: Rune Quest or Hero Wars

As you know, Rune Quest is the original Gloranthan roleplaying game, whereas Hero Wars is the new one Chaosium brought out after they lost the intellectual property rights to Rune Quest.

Has anyone played both?

No - well I haven't. I remember buying RuneQuest (which had a fantastic picture on the cover of some barbarian fighting a beast) and being totally baffled. So I never played it. Then at school some people had the 'Medieval Europe' RQ game and we played that and it was grate. So I'm going to be controversial and say that the Gloranthan stuff, atmospheric though it may have been, was poorly explained and did a disservice to a pretty neat rules system.

As I believe may have been mentioned by you elsewhere DV, nobody in RuneQuest ever went on a quest for a rune.

The thing I don't like about the Gloranthan stuff is there is just so much of it. If you were going to run RQ seriously - and the same is probably true for HW - you need to buy a million books and download oodles of stuff off the internet. It's far better as a player, because you are exploring this world of strangeness and it's someone else's job to actually know how it all fits together.

I must have read a similar edition to Tom. Same great picture, same bewildered failure to make headway. Plus it was written in a pretty but headahce inducing font.

How did they lose the intellectual property rights? Did they accidentally exchange them for some money?

I'm not sure exactly how they lost the intellectual property rights. I think they entered into some kind of joint venture with Avalon Hill which went horribly wrong. I gather Chaosium's business practices are a bit useless - more recently they lost the rights to the game Pendragon in curious circumstances.
