Maras - classic or dud

Maras are another animal I saw in Fota Wildlife Park. Aside from the endlessly hilarious fact that they have the same name as Charles Haughey's Press Secretary, they are a fascinatingly cute hybrid of rabbit and kangaroo. So I say: Classic.

Whoa Nelly. Kangaroos and rabbits? But ones a rodent and the other a marsupial. How? Does it suckle? Ween? Crawl around on its mama's fur into a pouch though it is barely a foetus.

Or is it parallel evolution?

The Maras sounds very much like a quokka, a creature only found on Rottnest Island off the coast of western Australia, Except they are more like a Gerbil and a kangaroo.

Quokkas are cool, they look a bit like giant rats, hence the name of the island, discovered by Dutchmen back in the day.

Unfortunately the local hoons decided that a good game to play while drunk was quokka soccer, which basically involved kicking the friendly little creatures as far as possible, the twunts.

Does anyone have a link to a picture of a Mara?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here: Mara

That one doesn't look quite so kangarabbity. But in real life they hop along like a kangaroo but have ears that look a bit like a rabbits.

Admittedly rabbits hop along as well, so arguably the Mara just looks like a cross between a rabbit and a larger rabbit.

note socially progressive rearing behaviour: a "crèche"

mark s, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They look funny. Dunno about "cute."

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That is, basically, a rabbit, surely. I mean I like rabbits so classic and all that. But even so.

Tom, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They reminded me a bit of kangaroos when I saw them.

DV, Wednesday, 5 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aww, they're odd but quite cute.

It looks like someone started off making a rabbit, and then their attention wandered and they just finished it off with a round bit.
